Sagamore Pendry Baltimore, the highly-antici-pated Fells Point hotel set to open Tuesday, readslike a love letter to Baltimore andAmerican history.

Built on Recreation Pier, the 128-room boutiquehotel is backed by the real estate companies ownedbyUnderArmourCEOKevinPlankandhis brother,Scott Plank. It has a natural nautical feel associatedwith a waterfront property as well as a number ofequestrian elements, undoubtedly reflecting KevinPlank’s affinity for horses.

PartickSutton, thehotel’sBaltimore-based interi-or designer, seasoned the former port warehouse —restored at a cost of roughly $60 million — withhistorial footnotes and design nods to tell a story.

“One of the things that became evident in thedesign of the hotel is this confluence of what I referto as gritty luxury,” Sutton said. “It means that youembrace Baltimore’s industrial heritage, but then

you layer into it the elegance and the luxury aspectsthatarenotonlyherehistorically, butalso thegoalofcreating a luxury hotel.”

While the brick facade of the BeauxArts-style Recreation Pier is familiar toBaltimoreans and the public — it wasfeatured regularly in “Homicide: Life onthe Street”— the build out of the hotelwilloffer a new experience for guests. Theproperty is managed by California-basedMontage Hotels & Resorts under thePendry brand.

“It’sunique.Therearea lotof largechainluxury properties in the city. This has theunique characteristic of being truly on thewater,” Sutton said. “The rooms really floatout over thewater.”

In advance of the hotel’s ribbon cutting onTuesday, TheBaltimore Sunbrings you an exclusivelook inside the new property, which is built aroundan interior courtyardwith a pool at the pier’s end.

First, the roomsWith courtyard views and a cozy feel, the

Superior Courtyard King rooms rival a Captain’sQuarters, according to Sutton.

Each standard room, which spans 370square feet, features a king bed and a55-inchflat screenLEDtelevision.Multi-colored accent rugs, rich wooden ac-cents, mahogany headboards and luxurylinens give the rooms what Sutton calleda “residential quality” as he adjustedplush pillows adorned by an anchorensnarled by a massive octopus. Suttonadded that the anchor and octopuswere actually inspired by a real sailor’stattoo.

These rooms range from $400 to $600 a night,according to Jon Chocklett, director of sales andmarketingwith the hotel.

Grand staircaseSutton predicted that the restored grand

staircase,which rises from its ownentranceto the ballroom, will be a favorite of bridesandwedding photographers alike.

The concrete staircase — it’s 7 feet widecompared to the traditional 4 feet forstaircases — is covered in “red dyed,beautifully heathered carpet,” Sutton said.

“We restored it to the National HistoricLandmark standards,” explained Sutton,adding that the two-story staircase featuresastripofhiddenlightingthatmakesaparcelof the stair appear to glow at night.

“It’s historic and exciting,” Sutton said.“It’s something special.”

‘A view of the bombardment of FortMcHenry’

Mounted to the side of the top of thegrand staircase is aphotographicprint of anengraving by John Bower, depicting themassive battle in which the British fleetattempted to take Fort McHenry — andsubsequently Baltimore—onSept. 13, 1814.

The mammoth piece was purchasedfrom the Library of Congress, Sutton said.Using a piece like this in the hotel is in linewith both Plank and the Pendry brand, hesaid.

“Kevin is a story teller. He’s always veryinterested in authentic stories about what-ever we are working on,” said Sutton, whoalso worked on Plank’s home in Brook-landville. “The samewithPendry.They andKevin have an aligned vision on this wherethey wanted the project to feel specificallyhere. Ifyoustartwith thatprecept, therearea lot of factors that are historically here innature.”

GrandballroomWith its plaster moldings, gold leaf

accents and laylight ceiling, offering theillusion of a skylight, the grand ballroom isthe hotel’s piece de resistance.

“It’s the premiere architectural space inthe city,” Sutton said of the ballroom,whichfits up to 300 people. “It’s been restoredexactly theway itwas in1940.”

Inaddition to themassivewhitecolumnsand hulking walls that creates a cavernousfeel, the ballroom has enormous windowsthat look over bustlingThames Street.

“The lighting is beautiful,” Sutton said.“It really is breathtaking.”

And even though the hotel has yet toopen, couples have booked all but twoweekends from September to December,Chocklett said.

‘Rituals’The hotel’s front entrance features a pair

of steel sculptures by Adam Scott Cook,who also was one of the architects on theproject. Cook worked with Amish artisansto shape the steel for the project, Chocklettsaid.

Thewhitesteel interlockedcurvedformsentitled “Rituals” are supposed to evoke thesails of ships, a gentle nod to the property’snautical locale, Sutton said.

The structures take on new life in theevening when they are illuminated withincandescent light, he added.

ReceptiondeskChecking in also will be a memorable

experience at the hotel’s opulent receptiondesk.

Situated in frontof a largewindowwithaview of the Ann Street Pier, the smoothonyx countertop is dark, rich and inviting.Thebaseof thedesk ismadeout of a curvedbronze sheet thatmimics a flag in thewind.

“It’s subtle, but it ties together,” Sutton

said.The desk is canopied by 46 LED droplet

lights.“At night they echo the way the light

dapples across thewater,” Sutton said.Elevator doorsEven the elevator doors tell a story.Sutton was looking for a design to cover

the elevator doors when he found theancient Arabic geometric pattern he usedon the doors while doing a Google imagesearch.

The design had a “quality of fireworks,”which related back to the Star SpangledBanner and American history elements.

The same motif is used throughout thehotel from the railings to the walls of theprivate dining room.

“I was looking for a pattern that evokedbombs bursting in air,” said Sutton, addingthat the hotel is located 1,000 feet fromwhere The Star Spangled Banner waswritten. “Iwas looking for that energy.”

Private dining roomThe hotel’s Rec Pier ChopHouse, which

boasts award-winning chef AndrewCarmellini, undoubtedly will attract a fairnumber of the town’s foodies. But therestaurant’s private dining room will drawparticular attention.

“Thebird’s eyeprivatediningroomwasaway to carve out a bit of space,” Suttonexplained. “It’s like this little hidden crow’snest. It’s private, but you can look over theedge and engage in the restaurant.”

Sutton further embellished the space byusing mahogany screens with the sameArabic pattern found on the elevators.

“The purpose is to create mystery,” hesaid.

CannonRoomThe hotel’s whiskey bar is aptly named

for the three cannons that divers salvagedfrom the harbor surrounding the buildingduring the renovation.

One of those cannons from the late1600snow rests within the room’s flooring. (Theother twocannonsare locatedonthehotel’spool deck.)

“Everything in theroomisgoing tobe thecolor ofwhiskey,”Chocklett explained. “It’ssupposed toemulate the insideof awhiskeybarrel.”

Amber-hued white oak adorns the wallsand ceilings of the 20-person bar, locatedbetween the restaurant and the courtyard.Steel straps along the ceiling solidify thebarrel nod.

A sleek bar is adorned by brass and glasspendant lamps.

Private boat dockThe hotel also features a private boat

dock that can accommodate four slips or a100-foot yacht. The long white, metal dock,located parallel to theAnnStreet Pier, leadsto a private reception desk entrance.

Guests can either stay on their boat andreceive all of the room service amenitiesavailable to guests or they can stay in thehotel.

Docking prices will range from approxi-mately $50 to $75 per foot and will beadjusted based on daily rates or overnightstays.
