(BPT) – You’ve waited all winter for the chance to trans-form your lawn from that drab, frozen tundra into the lush, green oasis you know it can be. But this transforma-tion doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t expect Mother Nature to take care of every-thing herself. Getting your dream yard is going to require

a little work on your part, but the rewards are worth the efforts and as you’ll see, even the smallest changes can have a big impact. Follow each of the five simple tips below and you’ll be enjoying your yard all season long.

* Water more heavily, less often. When it comes to water-ing your lawn, less is more, provided you’re talking about watering frequency and not water amount. Instead of sev-eral light sprinklings, give your lawn one thorough water-ing (about an inch a week) and you’ll ensure more of the water is absorbed by your lawn instead of being lost to evapo-ration.

* Cut right, cut smart. When it comes to lawn care, hav-ing the right mower makes all the difference. Husqvarna lawn mowers with high per-formance cutting decks will give superior cut quality and performance and most are capable of bagging, mulch-ing or straight discharge. If your lawn is rough or hilly, a self-propelled drive system can take the work out of mow-ing. Some models now even have capability of four-wheel drive to further reduce effort.

* Trim back overgrown trees and bushes. The most beau-tiful yard in the world can be quickly overshadowed - lit-erally and figuratively - by unkempt trees and bushes. How far you trim back your trees and bushes is a matter of preference, but any dead

branches should be removed. After that, make sure you trim uniformly and clean up when you’re done to finish that pol-ished look.

* Take the time to aerate. One of the most effective ways to support new grass growth is to aerate your lawn. Using a mechanical or manual aerator, you can punch small holes in the soil, allowing much-need-ed water, air and nutrients to make it down to the root struc-ture, supporting future grass development and long-term yard health.

* Get motivated to mulch. Regular mulching reduces weeds while promoting the health and growth of your lawn by returning needed nutrients back to the soil. In addition, because mulch clippings are comprised of 85 percent water and just 5 percent nitrogen, leaving them on your lawn can satisfy as much as 25 percent of your fertilizer needs. So the next time you feel the need to bag, opt to mulch instead.

After months of winter weather, you’re ready to relax on your beautiful green lawn once again, and getting there is easier than you think. Apply the tips above and you’ll be able to create the yard that’s perfect for everything you have planned for the season. (MS) — Improved practic-es in the construction indus-try today reflect the greening of building codes across North America. This proactivity is highlighted by advancements in window daylighting, insula-

tion, air infiltration, and new wall-building materials. How-ever, many say that our eco-re-sponsibility can do even better than this.

Why not choose methods and materials, for instance, that

are even more energy efficient than the minimum demand-ed by building codes? If you want lowered energy consump-tion, more conservation and increased property value, be sure to choose a builder who has a demonstratable record in eco-responsibility.

“A huge step forward is to replace the traditional wood framing of your house with what we call ICFs, insulated concrete forms,” says Keven Rector at Nudura, a leading name in this technology. “If, for instance, you build the enve-lope of your house with con-crete instead of wood, the ener-gy required to heat and cool it will be significantly reduced, a plus for the environment, and along with reduced energy bills, a plus for you.”

Severe storm resilienceThe compact ICFs (nudu-

ra.com) are delivered to the construction site, where each form interlocks with the next to quickly assemble one strong monolithic wall.

“Our advanced design com-bines two panels of thick (EPS) foam with the structur-al strength and thermal mass of concrete,” Rector explains. “The resulting envelope imme-diately gives your house hur-ricane wind-resistance up to 250 miles per hour. Concrete walls also deliver an ener-gy efficiency rating as high as R-50 (compared to an aver-age R-20 in wood structures), saving you up to 50 percent on utility bills. With the concrete option, countless trees remain untouched, and with lowered energy consumption and less tapping of natural resourc-es every day, imagine over the years how much of a contribu-tion your house will make to recapturing a sustainable envi-ronment.”

As importantly, he says, a home built with this concrete system is also fire resistant and sound resistant, and is far less prone to mold, cold spots and drafts.

“Builders receive workplace benefits too,” Rector points out. “ICF construction assures the adherence to building codes, it takes up less shipping space, requires less manpow-er at the site, and the assem-bly is faster than wood fram-ing. Time-strapped builders and eager homeowners benefit equally from this efficiency.”

If you want your builder to use ICFs, be sure to discuss it early in the plans.

(BPT) - Spring is in the air, and that means tackling home improvement projects you’ve been putting off all winter long. As you plan for these proj-ects over the warmer months, include steps to improve your family’s home environment, both inside and outside. Your house will be a better, more comfortable place to live.

Conserve water. Help pre-serve this precious resource by replacing any leaky indoor faucets in your kitchen, laun-dry and bathroom. Also, think about replacing your shower-head with a low-flow model. Outdoors, check the water-ing hose faucet for leaks and replace it if needed. And when mowing the lawn, epa.gov rec-ommends setting the blades 2 to 3 inches high because the longer grass shades the soil, improving moisture retention and helping the grass survive drought and tolerate insect damage.

Reduce indoor pollutants. Improve your home’s indoor air quality. EPA studies indi-cate indoor air may be 25 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, more polluted than outdoor air. A whole-house air cleaner, such as Trane CleanEffects, can remove up to 99.98 percent of airborne par-ticles and allergens from the filtered air, such as dust, pol-len, bacteria, pet dander, mold spores and smoke.

Seal air leaks. Keep cool air in and hot air out by seal-ing leaks and adding insula-tion. Areas to check for repairs include the attic, garage and unfinished basement. Throughout the house, ensure that all cooling and heating vents and registers meet the floors, walls and ceilings and are well sealed.

Keep cool more efficiently. Upgrading your cooling system to a more efficient one can save home energy consumption, helping to save you money. For example, a TruComfort Vari-able Speed Air Conditioner is one of the industry’s most effi-cient systems, delivering pre-cise cooling by running at the exact speed needed to keep a home constantly comfortable. This allows the compressor, outdoor fan and indoor fan to vary operating speed as the temperature outside changes, slowing down or speeding up in

small increments rather than turning completely off and on.

Shield windows from the hot sun. Seasonal heat comes indoors from windows, too, so close draperies and shades, or install them in rooms that don’t already have them. Outside, create some natural shade near the windows by planting a tree, tall bushes or adding awnings on the sunniest side of the house.

Control indoor tempera-tures. Ensure a more com-fortable home environment by adding a programmable HVAC control. Trane’s programma-ble smart controls are easy to use and, when paired with the Nexia smart home system, let you remotely monitor and con-trol indoor temperatures, so you can adjust your system to be more efficient based on your family’s schedule.

6 ways to give your home a breath of fresh air

Page 6: Real Estate Guide

BY: SCOTT MCGILLIVRAY

(MS) – Americans contin-ue to fuel remodeling spend-ing across the country, driv-en by upward growth in real estate prices and the ris-ing cost to trade up to a larg-er home. Basement renova-tions are expected to be a hot trend in 2016, as buyers look to maximize available living space rather than move, and as young buyers look to offset the cost of homeownership with potential income suites.

While finishing a base-ment can be a great alterna-tive to moving –– especially if you love your neighborhood — there are some challenges homeowners must be aware of when tackling below-grade liv-

ing spaces. Choosing the right products is vital to the comfort, safety and function of your new living area. Look for products that help to maximize energy efficiency and protect against moisture, fire and noise.

Here are the top points to consider to ensure a successful basement renovation.

Waterproof it. Check the inte-rior foundation and floors to make sure there are no exist-ing moisture issues, water damage or mold problems. Address any primary mois-ture issues before finishing the space. Examine grading to ensure water runs away from your foundation.

Insulation is key. Insulation plays a critical role in mak-ing your basement feel com-

fortable, while keeping it safe and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation, like Roxul ComfortBoard IS, against the concrete founda-tion before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fas-tened or adhered to the con-crete foundation wall, which prevents thermal bridging through the studs, providing better thermal performance. Finish with a moisture-resis-tant and dimensionally stable insulation between the studs, like R14 Comfortbatt, to pro-tect against common basement issues such as mold, mildew and rot.

Choose a functional design. Draw out plans, carefully tak-ing into consideration any low ceilings or small windows. Try to incorporate structural fea-tures, such as attractive wood beams, into your design. Keep the space as open as possible. Select lighting that provides a bright, airy feel.

Don’t forget to soundproof it. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s quiet and privacy. Whether your newfound space will function as a home the-atre, music room, home office or playroom, it will benefit from quality acoustic insulation, like Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound. Not only is it highly effective, but it’s also easy to install.

Consider fire safety. Since many basements are now being renovated as income suites, fire protection is also a vital consideration. Whenever possible, select building mate-rials with a high fire-resistance rating and look for products that will not off-gas or contrib-ute to toxic smoke in the event of a fire. Include additional exits in your renovation plan and educate yourself on your local fire code.

Before you start your renova-tion, be sure to check with your municipality to secure the right permits and to ensure that you’re complying with local bylaws and building codes. Finishing a basement can be a smart renovation, if done prop-erly, adding to a home’s value, increasing its function and pro-viding greater enjoyment or income potential.

(BPT) - Before you take that next breath, do you know what’s in the air in your home? Sure there’s oxygen and carbon diox-ide - that much you know - but it’s the things you don’t know about that should concern you.

A quick test of your indoor air quality can unearth the presence of several, unwant-ed contaminants in your air, including volatile organic com-pounds (VOCs) like formalde-hyde, allergens like dust mites, as well as mold and other par-ticulates. This is the materi-al you’re unknowingly breath-ing in every day, and continued exposure to it can lead to future health concerns.

So what can you do about the quality of your air? Do you have to just breathe it in and deal with it? Hardly. You can dramat-ically improve the air quality in your home, and doing so is eas-ier than you thought. Start by implementing these five tips.

* Keep the floors clean. Many of the particulates and aller-gens found in your home’s air are kicked up from the floor as people or pets move about. Dil-igently cleaning the floors is a good way to minimize this con-cern. So whether your tool of choice is a vacuum, a mop or a broom, focus on the floors and your family will benefit.

* Build a wall against form-aldehyde. If you’re like most people, you spend about 90 per-cent of your time indoors and that choice exposes you to a greater risk of inhaling formal-dehyde and getting sick. Most

people associate formaldehyde with laboratories and mortuar-ies but there are actually many sources of the chemical in the average home including glue, particle board, plywood, paper product coatings and other household chemicals. Fortu-nately, you don’t have to suffer this drop in air quality, there are solutions to clean your air and remove formaldehyde. AirRe-new with M2Tech uses an inno-vative patent pending technolo-gy to actively clean your home’s air. This advanced drywall cap-tures and transforms formal-dehyde into inert compounds, and never re-emits them into the air, preserving your air quality. “Not only is it mold-re-sistant, it actually absorbs vol-atile organic compounds for up to 75 years,” said contractor and home improvement expert Mike Holmes. “This isn’t just about doing the basement; this should be the whole house.”

* Service the furnace. Is your home’s furnace running opti-mally? If it’s not, it could be jeopardizing the quality of your air. Your furnace should be ser-viced annually by a trained technician to make sure it’s

running properly. After that, it’s up to you to make sure the furnace filter is replaced every month. Set the first day of the month as your day to change your filter and you’ll never for-get.

* Circulate fresh air. This may not be doable on the coldest days of winter but during the other three seasons, try to have the windows open as much as possible. Even an hour or two of fresh air breezing through your home can dramatically improve your indoor air quality.

* Don’t smoke. Among its many other negatives, nicotine use is the leading cause of lung cancer. If you’re a smoker, the deterioration of your home’s air quality is just one more rea-son to quit. Start your quit plan today and you’ll be breathing easier indoors and out.

Your home is your castle and you should feel safe and comfortable whenever you’re there so follow the tips above to improve the air quality in your home. And once you do, take a deep breath, you’ve earned it.
