IT WAS A night of glow-in-the-dark fun mixedwith a run.
A total of 12 000 people from across greaterJoburg gathered at the Wanderers club onSaturday evening for a 5km run, walk and cycle inwhat has been described by the organisers as“South Africa’s most electric night event”.
The participants were covered in neonaccessories and body paint.
“It went fantastically,” Tavis Brown, one ofthe organisers of the first Joburg Neon Run, saidyesterday.
“We wanted a unique, value-for-money run. There are lots of different kinds of these events, and it’s quite big. We’re only a year into this andare hoping to make it a once-a-year run in eachcity,” he said.
Doors opened at 3pm at the stadium, with therace starting at 6.30pm. Then it was a case of“ready, set and glow”.
For avid runner Khulile Mkhabela, 28, theevent offered just the kind of mix of fun andcolour to make her forget she was participating in a run at all.
“It felt more like a fun walk,” she said.“My boyfriend and I try to do a race a month,
and this one just happened to be this month. There were lots of queues but registration wasvery quick. We got our neon paint and glow sticks, and got the race started.” Her boyfriend, AphiweFali, 27, also said he thoroughly enjoyed the run.
After the race, participants were treated toa party featuring some of the hottest local andinternational DJs.

IN THE LION KING, the rogueScar plans a coup to overthrowhis brother, King Mufasa, witha couple of conniving hyenas.
But Juno, the brown hyenafound wandering through thestreets of Blairgowrie, Randburg,in September, is more shy thansly. The young hyena damagedher paws running along therough pavement, trying to findher way back to her clan, whichlived, researchers believed, in thehilly Kloofendal area outside theurban sprawl.
Now, after two months inJohannesburg Zoo and threemonths in a private reserve inNorth West, she’s a doe-eyed,well-adjusted creature ready toreturn to the wild.
With the help of the SPCAand public donations, the UrbanHyena Research Project, led byWits University hyena expert DrBrian Kuhn, purchased a GPStracking collar to monitor Juno’smovements over the next 12months. The Urban HyenaResearch Project is dedicatedto studying wild hyenas thatwander into cities.
Juno was sedated andcollared on Friday with no side
effects. The collar will show theteam her hour-by-hourmovements and alert them if shedoesn’t move for a long period.
Hyena clans travel longdistances (they can run up to60km/h) each night in search offood. Researchers guess Junoprobably lost her way while theclan was travelling, said KeithNewnham, a member of theUrban Hyena project.
When Juno came toJohannesburg Zoo, thecarnivorous animal was in a stateof trauma because she had beenchased through the congestedstreets by eager strangers withcameras. She was at most eightmonths old.
Since then, Juno hasrecovered and gained weight. She now weighs 45kg – almost afull-grown hyena.
The wild may not be ready totake her in, though.
While male brown hyenasare sometimes nomadic, femalesare not, and there’s a chanceJuno might be chased awayby other females in the clan,Newnham said. “That’s the greatunknown.”
Juno will be released thisweek. The doors to the enclosurewill be left open, and she will befree to leave, at last.

IT WAS an hour before thestage lights went on, and thegirls were still getting ready.

“The pageant is usually heldon Africa Day, but this yearwe’re having it on Interna-tional Day Against Homopho-bia,” said Zsa-Zsa WhitneyGabor-Houston as she looked in
the mirror and brushed liquidfoundation onto the areabeneath her eyes.
Gabor-Houston was MC atSaturday’s pageant and wasbecoming anxious about thetime as the Wits Theatre filledup steadily.
Standing in her bra andpanties, she went through theorder of her five outfit changesfor the night.
“We have the same thingsthat heterosexuals have, butyou don’t hear of us havingheterophobia,” she said as her3cm-long false lashes fluttered.
As 8pm drew closer, prepa-rations became frantic and the12 contestants raced around thedressing room, combing each
others’ wigs and putting safetypins where things were fallingapart.
When the curtain finallywent up, almost an hour late, itwas all panicky glamorous out-fit changes, lip-synching andhigh-heeled strutting.
They floated through thetraditional, cocktail wear andevening wear sections, andbarely made it through themost difficult section of all, swimwear, but mastered it allwith grace.

lip-synching performers. Thegroup served up a number ofpopular Tina Turner songs.
Martin George, one of thejudges, explained how theychose the winner. “We’re look-ing for an ambassador to takeforward issues in the LGBTIcommunity. We also considertheir poise, glam and elegance, but it’s not just about thelooks,” he said.
