CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. March 31, 2019 Readings for March 31 his man welcomes sinners. (Luke 15:2) Isn’t it ironic that this story, which is one of the best loved in all of Scripture, has a somewhat misleading title? Rather than calling it the parable of the prodigal son, we should call it the parable of the forgiving father. This is not a story only about one son. It’s a story about two sons and their father. And as a parable, this story tells us about our heavenly Father’s infinite love for us. The parable of the prodigal son has two distinct goals: it shows us that God wants everyone to know his love, and it shows us that God wants those who know his love to experience it more deeply. In a sense, the prodigal son was “dead” because of the sins he had committed when he was away from home. But the moment he came back, it’s as if he had come back to life. Jesus used this fellow to describe people who have not accepted the love that God has for them. They need to turn and come home to him. They need what we would call an “initial conversion.” These are the people God asks us to lift up in prayer in a special way—especially our loved ones who are far from the Lord. May they all experience an initial conversion! The prodigal son’s older brother, however, was already “alive.” He was faithful and hardworking. But he also needed a conversion. He may have been obedient to his father, but a lot of sinful thoughts still occupied his mind. This fellow needed “ongoing conversion,” a deeper turning away from his habits of resentment, anger, and self-righteousness. Even if we believe in Jesus, pray every day, and go to Mass regularly, we still need ongoing conversion. We can be trying our best to live good lives and to care for our families. But we can fall into judgmental, self-righteous, self-centered ways of thinking. And so God asks us to keep turning to him for help and healing. God welcomes home everyone who comes to him. No matter how big or small our sins, he is always waiting with open arms. “Thank you, Father, for welcoming me home.” Taken from The Word Among Us, Lent 2019 Vol. 38, Number 4: Used with permission. his man welcomes sinners. (Luke 15:2) Isn’t it ironic that this story, which is one of the best loved in all of Scripture, has a somewhat misleading

title?

They need what we would call an “initial conversion.”

These are the people God asks us to lift up in prayer in a special way—especially our loved ones who are far from the Lord.

Scrutinies for the Elect: Prayers for our Seven! – The season of Lent coincides with the Purification and Enlightenment phase of the RCIA process. During this phase, our members of the Elect and our Candidates are called to intensify their prayer lives and discern more deeply their desire to join the Church. As the larger parish community, we are called to help them develop their relationship with God and the Church and to pray for them. The Scrutinies, which are celebrated at the 11:30am Mass on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent, are an important part of the Purification and Enlightenment phase. During the Scrutinies with our Elect, we look within ourselves to find anything that keeps us from Christ and then look to Christ to heal those weaknesses and to strengthen us as we face further temptations. Please keep our seven members of the Elect in your prayers.

Are You Thinking about Returning? Do You Think of Yourself as an Inactive Catholic? Welcome! – If you are a Catholic who has been away, or

“used to be Catholic,” we invite you to be an active part of us again. Landings offers “a safe place to land,” a place for listening and being heard, a place for asking questions and reconnecting with your faith. Contact Theresa Prymuszewski at [email protected]. Sacred Page: Preparing for Next Sunday’s Mass – A Worthy Lenten Resolution! – Join us in the West Conference Room at 7pm on Wednesday, April 3 as Cathedral seminarian Elmer Herrera-Guzman leads our consideration of the Mass readings for Sunday, April 7, the Fifth Sunday of Lent. At these weekly sessions we come together to hear the Sunday Scriptures read aloud and to discuss how the Good News we hear bears on the Christian life.

Our RCIA group prepared and served the Simple Lenten Meal on March 22. On Friday, April 3, the Young Adults are the hosts.

Living Lent

View and share the English Lenten brochure.

Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl Reflection – Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl invites us to reflect on the Catholic social teaching principle of Solidarity. Whatever our back-grounds, we make up one human family. Let us pray that we may see our neighbors as brothers and sisters and seek justice and peace for all. Cardboard piggy-banks - Rice Bowls - are available in the Cathedral. You may turn them into the rectory or sacristy after Easter. Young Adult Lenten Coffeehouse Series – “Living the Eucharist” –All young adults (those in their 20s and 30s) are welcome to Cathedral Coffeehouse immediately after the 5:30pm Sunday Mass in the North Conference Room for our Lenten series, “Living the Eucharist,” to help you enter more profoundly into the Mass. Are you interested in getting involved with the Young Adults or receiving more informa-tion? Email [email protected]. Choral Highlights – Enjoy the Lenten inspirations in the Office of Music Ministries’ Choral Highlights website feature, with lively descriptions and samples of versions of the music sung by the Schola Cantorum at the 10am Latin and the 11:30am Sunday Masses. Wednesday Evening Confessions – This Lent all parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington offer confessions every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm. Confessions at St. Matthew’s in English and Spanish are heard from 6:30 to 8pm (Wednesday of Holy Week from 6 to 7:15pm), in addition weekdays from 11am to Noon and Saturdays from 4 to 5pm.

Stations of the Cross – The Via Crucis is a journey made in the Holy Spirit, that divine fire that burned in the heart of Jesus and brought him to Calvary. The Stations of the Cross in the form adopted by Pope John Paul II are prayed in English on Fridays of Lent at 6pm, followed by a Simple Lenten Meal, and in Spanish on Sundays of Lent at 2:15pm. Join us for this beautiful devotion, so fitting for Lent. Lenten Fast and Abstinence – Ash Wednesday (March 6) and Good Friday (April 19) are days of fast and abstinence. All Catholics who have reached their 18th birthday and are less than 60 years old are bound to observe the fast, by which they are limited to a single full meal during the course of the day. All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday must observe days of abstinence, during which no meat may be eaten. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Let’s abstain together in fellowship at Friday’s Simple Lenten Meals!

Simple Lenten Meal with Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC) – The Social Justice Committee invites parishioners and friends to a Simple Lenten Meal this Friday, April 5 in the North Confer-ence Room, following the 6pm Stations of the Cross. The Cathedral Young Adult Ministry will prepare and serve the meal, while staff of CLINIC will speak about its mission of responding to the Gospel message of welcoming the stranger by protecting the dignity and rights of immigrants. All donations will benefit their good works. Gospel of Luke – Our latest Saturday Bible study with Fr. Jack Hurley, which highlights St. Luke’s Gospel, concludes on April 6 with a discussion of our Lord’s Passion. Bring your Bible and join us at 10:30am in the East Conference Room. Easter Flower Offering – Each year we try to decorate the Cathedral for Easter in a way that truly reflects the noble simplicity of that holy season. In order to do so again this year, we ask for your support. Please use the envelopes marked “Flower Offering” located in the pews. Thank you for your generosity. 16th Annual 7 Church Walk for Young Adults – DCCatholic invites all young adults (20s and 30s) to the 16th Annual 7 Church Walk on Saturday, April 13. April 2: Dr. Robert J. Wicks, PSY. D. ~ “The Simple Care of a Hopeful Heart: Strengthening Your Inner Life in Challenging Times” The Simple Care of a Hopeful Heart

~ Strengthening Your Inner Life in Challenging Times ~

One of the greatest gifts we can share with others is a sense of our own peace. However, we can’t share what we don’t have. By discussing psychological and spiritual approaches to maintaining a healthy perspective and enhancing resilience, Dr. Wicks, an expert on the prevention of secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others) and author of Bounce: Living the Resilient Life, Riding the Dragon, and Prayerfulness, offers insights into how we can extend our warmth to others without losing our own inner fire in the process. Topics will include: avoiding dangers that lead to unnecessary stress and a loss of perspective; developing your own self-care program; knowing the four “voices” we need in our circle of friends to have balance and courage in life; improving self-awareness at each phase of adulthood; benefiting from inner darkness; and strengthening and deepening your own rule of prayer. Practical, illustrative, lively, this rich presentation will provide essential information on resilience, compassion, prayer, spirituality, and personal/professional wellbeing.

For over 35 years, Dr. Robert Wicks, has been called to speak calm into chaos for individuals and groups experiencing great stress, anxiety and confusion. Dr. Wicks received his doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D.) from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, is Professor Emeritus at Loyola University Maryland, and has taught in universities and professional schools of psychology, medicine, nursing, theology, edu-cation, and social work. In 2003 he was the Commencement Speaker for Wright State School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio and in 2005 he was both Visiting Scholar and the Commencement Speaker at Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. He also was Commencement Speaker at, and the recipient of honorary doctorates from, both Georgian Court University and Caldwell College in New Jersey.

In the past, he has spoken on Capitol Hill to Members of Congress and their Chiefs of Staff, at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Mayo Clinic, the North American Aerospace Defense command, at Harvard’s Children’s Hospital, Harvard Divinity School, Yale School of Nursing, Princeton Theological Seminary, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and to members of the NATO Intelligence Fusion Center in England on his major areas of expertise: resilience, self-care, the

prevention of secondary stress (the pressures encountered in reaching out to others) and approaches to strengthening your spiritual life.

He has also spoken at the Boston Public Library’s commemoration of the Boston Marathon bombing, addressed 10,000 Catholic educators in the Air Canada Arena in Toronto, was the opening keynote speaker to 1,500 physicians for the American Medical Directors Association, spoken at the FBI Academy, led a weeklong course in Beirut for Catholic relief workers from Aleppo, Syria, and addressed caregivers in Beijing, Hanoi, Haiti, India, Thailand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Hungary, Guatemala, Malta, New Zealand, Australia, France, England, and South Africa.

In 1994, he was responsible for the psychological debriefing of relief workers evacuated from Rwanda during their bloody genocide. In 1993, and again in 2001, he worked in Cambodia. During these visits, his work was with professionals from the English-speaking com-munity who were present to help the Khmer people rebuild their nation following years of terror and torture. In 2006, he also delivered presentations on self-care at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland and Walter Reed Army Hospital to those health care professionals responsible for Iraqi and Afghani war veterans evacuated to the U. S. with multiple amputations and severe head injuries. More recently he addressed U.S. Army health care professionals returning from Africa where they were assisting during the Ebola crisis.

Dr. Wicks has published over 50 books for both professionals and the general public. He has published a number of works on spirituality including Prayer in the Catholic Tradition, Riding the Dragon; Everyday Simplicity; and Prayerfulness. Two of his latest psychological works are: Perspective: The Calm within the Storm and Bounce: Leading a Resilient Life. His books have been translated into Chinese, Polish, Indonesian, Korean, and Spanish.

In 2006, Dr. Wicks received the first annual Alumni Award for Excellence in Professional Psychology from Widener University, is also the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the American Counseling Association’s Division on Spirituality, Ethics and Religious Values in Counseling and for his service to the Church he received the Papal Medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice from Pope John Paul II.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Vol 38, Numero 4; Cuaresma 2019
