PROGRAM AT A GLANCE
Our full-time master’s is an intensive one-year program (part-time option available) designed to allow you to investigate research-based theories in literacy, put these theories into practice, and examine how culture impacts literacy teaching and learning.
EXAMPLE COURSES
Designed for educators who already hold a master’s degree, this endorsement provides the skills teacher-leaders need to empower them to teach reading and writing across the curriculum within the parameters of literacy-based techniques and assessments.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Graduate of a four-year regionally accredited university.
A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale).
Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (bachelor's +)
Valid Virginia teaching license or equivalent from another state.
Two recommendations — one from a supervisor.
500+ word essay: “Why do you seek graduate education?”

Longwood offers an outstanding and affordable education. Tuition costs $396 per credit hour*. Most classes are three credit hours. Financial aid, graduate assistantships, and monthly payment plans are available.

The program is endorsed by the accreditation agency Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) as well as the Virginia Department of Education Licensure Regulations for School Personnel and follows the Standards for Reading Professionals published by the International Literacy Association (ILA).

Our hybrid delivery model reduces time on campus, giving students greater flexibility. Some courses are fully online, most hybrid courses meet on campus on three Saturdays throughout the semester, and the two remaining hybrid courses meet on campus on a handful of weekday evenings throughout the semester.
