FFor homeowners with small backyards, a swimming pool may have seemed out of reach, however, this simply isn’t the case any longer as spools have taken the swimming pool industry by storm in recent years. You may be asking, “What is a spool?” It’s simple – a pool and spa combined to create a relaxing, backyard oasis. Spools are much smaller than the average swimming pool, but larger than a normal spa.

You can leave the heater off to use as a swimming pool or you can turn the heater on and use it as a traditional spa as spools are built with normal spa jets to create that bubbling, swirling current perfect for stress reduction and soothing sore muscles. You can even add a swim jet to create resistance for an amazing form of exercise either with the heater on or off.

• Is the housing closed in on all 4 sides. Some brands leave the back open where dust and grime can get in easier making the screen not operate correctly.

• When you push on the frame does it bow. There are brands that when you push on the frame it can move 3 or 4 inches. Heavy gage aluminum frames won’t bend or bow.

• Is there felt in the bottom track. That is where dust and grime gather the most. Cleaning that off of the felt is a real hassle and almost impossible.

• Are the plastic parts actually plastic or nylon. Nylon is much stronger than plastic. Plastic can become very brittle over time and crack or break apart.

• If the metal isn’t powder coated it may chip, flake, or fade. Powder coating looks like paint but acts like armor. And it is environmentally friendly.

• Most meshes aren’t puncture proof. There are some out there that are. You can actually take a pencil, poke a hole in it and it will come back into shape and a few seconds.

Retractable screens are now the norm. As a result, retractable screen sales are booming in our area! They are the only way you can screen a double French door. You need a screen that can disappear when the doors are shut and then screen off a doorway when the doors are open. It is preferable for a single door over the old fashioned unsightly swinging screen door with the gas piston spring. That fixed ugly swinging metal door negates the whole reason for having a beautiful front door or French door. And they work great on sliding doors.

The right retractable screens will last decades. When they aren’t in use, they are rolled up and protected from the elements so that the mesh looks new for years. But the important part of the last sentence is the word “right”. Since retractable screens came into the market about 20 years ago, several companies have come and gone. Here is what I recommend you look for and avoid when shopping for a retractable screen:

• Does it snap back? You don’t want to crush a little one’s finger and there are brands out there that can do that. Continued on page 28...

There are only a couple retractable screen companies out there that I would recommend. The others all have several flaws as shown above, and they won’t last.

Two companies I strongly recommend are Clearview Screens and US Retractable Screens. Both of these companies have been around for several years. They have taken the best features of some of the high quality screen doors on the market and made them better. They kept the strong points, with variations of course, and removed the weak points and then made improvements over all:

• All aluminum frame, roller, and track system• No plastic parts, if it’s not aluminum its high grade nylon.• Teflon baked tracks for an easy nonstick flow when opening and

closing the screen• Offset nylon handles for easier control and durability• Powder coated finishes formulated to withstand the toughest elements.• The screen that never slams back! They use speed reducer so that you

won’t lose the retracting pull yet they won’t slam back.• SuperScreen tm mesh that is tear, puncture, and mildew resistant. • One piece magnet and end cap system.• They can span an opening up to 5 feet where others only go 4• Here’s the kicker for me, they are made in the USA!!! Need I say more?

And finally, pricing. Of the companies I contacted, both of these companies had the most reasonable prices, especially in light of the fact that their product was superior. Clearview screens are offered by Craig Roberts in Sacramento. US Screens are offered by Brandon Burris of Lakeside Hidden Screens in Granite Bay.

You might also want to consider a power screen wall systems. Push a button on the remote control and a motorized screen the size of a wall can drop down and screen off your covered patio creating an entire screened in room. Both Roberts and Burris can provide quotes on a Power Screen System.

In the spirit of everything gardening, kids and families are invited to join Karden and his creators in the Pavilion Building for various garden workshops and “play dates” to learn about plants, trees and nature.

Karden, a puppet-pal can’t wait to get his hands dirty and hopes kids in the community feel the same way. Children’s gardening book authors Michael Glassman and Lisa Ely are here on site to inspire and illustrate the magic of dirt and gardening through hands-on activities as well as garden crafting ideas. Stop by and create a garden scavenger hunt or make leaf animals while learning about why plants are green. Some attendees can also participate in Karden’s Great Vegetable investigation where they can get a glimpse of what edibles go through underground. A fun mix and match game with vegetables and seeds are available for kids to see how much they know or don’t know about the plants that come from the Earth.

!roughout the weekend, kids and parents alike can learn creative composting secrets for helping the dirt in the garden be happy in order to produce healthier and greener plants. Glassman and Ely are focused on helping children learn about gardening by creating a relatable and fun character.
