A Little Bird Said

Is Manish Tiwari cracking the whip?

The most sought after Television talk show figure is now going by the rule book and showing news channels the limits that should not be crossed in terms of advertisements.

He hurled the 12-minute rule of TRAI at the broadcasters after he got hold of the data that news channels got away with using 47.5 per cent of the prime time for ads.

Moneysh Tiwari is known for his bluntness.

Just three generations back, sparrows were seen busy in the backyard or even in the verandas collecting straws and leaves for their nest.

Save for the rainy day is what we should learn was the granny’s lesson to youngsters showing the little bird gathering raw material for the nest.

The constant chirping and flutter of wings used to breathe life into the entire house hold.

But that has become history.

The fact that we are celebrating World Sparrow Day shows that the birds are going to be extinct. Even Tier III cities have no idea of what a sparrow looks like.

The male one with back patch under the neck and looking a bit heavy while the female one looking elegant and agile. The way they feed the younger ones is another spectacle people are missing.

Little eggs being in the nest and nurturing the fledglings are some sights which cannot be seen in the urban jungle anymore.

Of all the birds (Aves), sparrows are considered to be the most sensitive and cannot stand even the slightest level of pollution.

They need a serene and pollution-free atmosphere to live.

If the atmosphere is not conducive they migrate or die.

It is as simple as that. They just cannot put up with radiation, heat, lack of fresh air, water and vegetation.

With the houses growing vertical and a single door entrance in the flats, the birds are off and taken to its wing to unknown pastures.

Not very long ago people used to provide space for sparrow houses and encourage their coexistence.

Now it has become a distant dream. The housing structures have changed and are designed for nuclear families. Some balconies are used to house birds, but sparrows do not live in cages. They are independent and need to fly and teach the techniques to the next generation.

Only tough birds like pigeons can be seen in rocky and hard places. Some varieties of birds are kept in cages but that too has become a rarity in the concrete jungle.

Cell towers are the biggest enemies of birds and the radiation it emits kills or drives them away. The serene atmosphere and modern technology cannot coexist. Cell phones have become a necessary and with two and three sim cards the micro wave radiation has increased two-fold and three-fold. Nestled in the serene cocoon of Mother Nature, the little birds did get a jolt with the constant radiation waves, noise and air pollution.

Besides radiation and concrete apartments, pollution, industrial and domestic, has been driving the birds away from the cities. The noise pollution of vehicles, air conditioners, industries, the effluents and murky waters make the little creatures resolve that the cities are no place to live in for them.

Far from the maddening crowd they build their nests and lead a life of their own, until their privacy is invaded by the necessities of mankind.

The migration goes on till the greed of human beings exists. Conservation of forests, tree plantation and learning the art of living with nature only could preserve the near-extinct bird species. Vulture is now totally wiped out and is almost extinct. Save the bird and save the nature.

Chirp for the Sparrow, Tweet for the Sparrow” is the theme of the World Sparrow Day 2013.

The main theme is to bring together individuals and organizations working for conservation of sparrows and urban bio-diversity.

It is better if bird lovers go to their destinations instead of trying to create an artificial environment for them in the city.

Birds cannot live in cities and the habits do not change, the habitat has changed so let the bird-loving people preserve the green lands and forests and see to it that they are no disturbed there.
