To find out, we surveyed leaders at 350 large organizations across 12 countries and 5 industries.

Surveyed companies were assigned an innovation maturity level based on factors like their success in reinventing processes and improving employee experience.
Stages of innovation maturity
Just 15% of companies qualified at the highest level as innovation leaders. Another 28% ranked as advanced.More than half of all surveyed firms ranked as beginners or intermediate.
Becoming innovative leaders
All leaders and 9 of 10 advancers give CIOs good marks for working to boost innovation.
Effectiveness of CIO working with your teamHow would you rate the effectiveness of the CIO in working with you and your team on driving innovation?
Less than half of beginners and 64% of implementers do.
75% of CEOs in our survey prize CIOs who can lead and think strategically.

To move the needle, CIOs need to think beyond just implementing new tech.

Some of the most innovative CIOs in our study are using AI to automate information gathering.
CIOs can move the needle on innovation by creating tools that build their credibility with employees.
Gordon Dunsford, CIO of the New South Wales Police Force, equipped field officers with a mobile app they can use to request helicopter air support or call in a drug-sniffing K9 squad.
