1 Be absolutely grateful for everything day and night

From the Programme DelivererAnother very successful and fun-filled term. Many new Readers as well as a few Readers from the the previous term and of course the team of dedicated and talented Volunteers who have worked together to make CCR4U a success.Friendships have been forged and trust between communities built. Our goal of teaching English through reading as well as encouraging confidence to speak English and be part of the NZ community has been successful. Tow of our past Readers have goneonto do courses at Unitec and another has started volunteer work in another field.

Over the term, I have watched the Readers grow in confidence and skill. Our Library environment is one that offers security, privacy and a safe place in which to feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and speak freely. It is a friendly and informal environment where everyone feels included and nurtured. This in large part thanks to the warm and caring skill in which the Volunteers interact with the Readers offering them a non-threatening learning and social place of welcome.

We have covered a wide range of topics this term most of which have tied in with each sessions' reading. Other activities have arisen out of ideas inspired by a Reader's or Volunteer's interests or comments. Our Tai Chi demonstration and session on learning Te Reo are examples of this. One of our Readers brought her Tai Chi teacher to the class and after our one-one-one reading they played beautiful Chinese music and gave us an inspirations Tai Chi demonstration. Afterwards we all tried to follow the graceful Tai Chi gestures and movements. Unfortunately I discovered that not only am I totally unco-ordinated but have no sense of balance whatsoever! Despite my poor efforts and some impressive Tai Chi moves by the other Volunteers, we had a fun morning and gained an insight into the sense of harmony that Tai Chi offers.

Another session saw us all learning Te Reo and NZ history highlights. This was inspired by one of the Reader's interest and knowledge of NZ example of repeat reading and we are all now well versed in Maori greetings and a few basic words. We also had great fun working out the meaning of Maori place names. For example: Aotearoa = lang white cloud: ao- cloud, tea = white, roa – long. Rotoiti = lake: roto = lake and iti= small.

All of our group sessions focused on repeat reading leading to conversation, role play and social interaction all of which aimed to inspire confidence and language skills. We played introduction and “getting to know you games” , we “visited” the doctor and learned how to give directions. We had a tortuous session on tongue twisters, how the Volunteers and Readers both suffered! But it was a perfect way to encourage pronunciation and afterward speaking plain English was easy!

The term flew by and in fact seemed very short but this was partly due to one Monday being a public holiday and another Monday session being canceled due to our room being previously booked. After a welcome break and opportunity to recharge our batteries we will be eager to begin again on 9th February 2010.

2 People from every walk of life need to join hands and work on cleaning up the environment. We need to establish a society whose foundation is recycling (repeating)

Jot down ways you reduce recycle and repair• avoid single use or 'throw away goods'• choose products made from recyclable materials and with recyclable packaging• when shopping take your own bag and choose products with minimal packaging• recycle plastic, glass and paper• repair some things if at all possible,• compost garden waste• buy long lasting kitchen utensils, household products, clothing and toys• take old books etc to hospitals, surgeries or schools.

New Zealand has an efficient recyclingsystem so that the environment of the whole country is protected to be clean and beautiful. We put the plastic, glass and bottles and any other recyclables in the wheelie bins and the waste paper in the fortnightly collections. We compost garden and kitchen waste in a large contained to reuse for our garden needs. We follow these rules as best as we can. The important thing we have to know is that we need to make an effort to protect ourliving environment, keeping clean is what we can contribute as human beings on this planet.

3 A day begins with greetings. By exchanging greetings we can go through each day cheerfully

Reflections of a ReaderI think smiling and greetings are a very important thing to do; it is something that impressed me deeply when I just arrived in NZ, I was depressed, I was homesick and in culture-shock. I felt very lonely at that time, but the virtue of Nzers warmed my heart. They greeted me with a smile anytime and anywhere. The people were friendly and kind, with the beautiful scenery is was like living in paradise. Now I really love this country just like my own hometown. I wish everybody in NZ has this happiness forever.

Greetings we practised“Hello! How are you getting on?”“I hear all your family are in good health!”“How did you enjoy your holidays?”

“Hello! How are you? Haven't seen you for a long time.”“how are you getting on?”I have missed you heaps. You look great”“Pleased to meet you”“Nice to meet you too.”

“Hello. Good morning Mary. Hice to see you again.”“How did you spend your holdiay?”“Where did you travel to?”

    4 It’s a challenge to train ourselves. Cultivate self-reliance

    How I trained myself

Reader 1.I knew I had to make up my mind to study English hard. I had to read more, listenmore, write more, talk more, watch more to upskill my language ability. I believe that Iwill make progress slowly but surely.

Reader 2.I would love to raise my English level so I must train myself and cultivate self-reliance.Every day I listen to English radio and watch the television at home. Sometimes Ispeak to neighbours. When I meet with friends, I greet them in English. I try asking fordirections, I also try talking at the bank, in the post office and the supermarket.

Reader 3.when I just arrived in NZ I was attracted by the beautiful scenery and friendly people and the peaceful environment. So I liked the country immediately, but because of the big difference between NZ and China I still suffered from big culture shock at the time. It didn't take me long to realize that I liked living in NZ and I could choose NZ as my final destination. This was a big decision for me

and I started to learn English from the very basics. I understood that you are nevertoo old to learn. So for many years I am still keep on going with my English even though I must admit as a senior citizen is difficult to learn a foreign language. Memory is a big problem! Health problems also enter into the picture. But over time my English has improved a little and I can sue simple English in my personal life and communication with others. Actually it is quite convenient in every day life to be able to talk English even though I still don't feel good enough but I will keep on going for the rest of my life.

5 Words have the power to express a person's innermost attitude

From a librarianIt was my great pleasure to guide some of the CCR4U Volunteers and Readers during Library Week 2009 on the Remains of the Claywalk in New Lynn. They were such an enthusiastic and attentive group it made it a real buzz for me. We must make sure that we let you know about any future walks we organize in New Lynn or Henderson.

Than you also for the wonderful feedback – it is really appreciated and in fact is very rare, so thank you very much. I was particularly touched by the fact that the talk had really helped people to understand and make sense of the place in which they lived. It was one of the most successful programmes I have run in my time here at Waitakere Libraries.

Please pass on my appreciation to your group for being such wonderful participants.

7 “Do your best” is a golden rule to cherish

Inspiring words from Readers1.To accomplish anything successfully I must make the utmost effort remembering to complete the task using care and prudence.2.Last week I was busy in the Repeat Read Aloud programme on the Thursday morning. I had read a book from the library and the Volunteer helped me by explaining the words to me. I learned a lot of new colloquial words and their meaning. Also the book was quite funny so that in the end both my Volunteer and I were laughing out loud. It was hilarious.3.Ten years ago in China, I was a doctor. I always took the medical examinations seriously. I always prescribed to the patient with great care. If an operation was necessary I would take good care of the patient. When the patient was critically ill I would do my best to cooperate with the other staff on the team, other doctors, nurses and specialists. It was my duty as a doctor to serve the patients tothe best of my ability. It was with this attitude of doing my best to preserve life that I saw miracles happen.

9 Everyone has a valid opinion

What do you think? 1.If everybody avoids grabbing on selfishly and instead contributes with an open heart and with all their soul, then the world cannot but become a more beautiful and a more wonderful place.2.Just as truth shines more the brighter in contrast to falsehood, so does the difference of a valid opinion make an other's opinion more valid. This is true.

    CCR4U Kete - Community Journal

For four terms (of seven weeks) in a year, a small team of up to twenty adults come together for a few hours in a library to repeat read together. To celebrate this community the Culture Company Reading4U Incorporated offers the Reading Volunteers and Language Learning Readers the opportunity to contribute to the CCR4U Kete - Community Journal which through reflections, comments and stories will pass on in some small way the cultural learning and cultural pleasure that takes place during this time special time. We trigger the kete contributions by using the twelve sayings we begin each sessionwith when we meet.

This Kete - Community Journal gives the participants of the 1,2,3 programme a platform to express their initiative, offer theiropinion or leave a memento behind of their work. It also gives us a resource to photocopy for repeat reading aloud as a group without infringing copyright law.

Each Language Learning Reader is offered a few hours a couple of days a week over seven week period. So we can cater for the maximum numbers of Language Learning Readers the term is a unique time; whereas the Reading Volunteers may repeat the term Programme over and over with different Language Learning Readers.

Even though the Reading Volunteers repeat the Programme over and over they tell us that they are continually learning everytime they participate.

Let the true worth of everyone shine throughout the world

About the language we use in Adults Repeat Reading Aloud Together

We do not teach we read together (we learn from each other)

Adults repeat reading aloud together is essentially a community project. We can repeat read aloud even when we cannot speak the same language! Repeating after someone can be easy. Reading aloud to someone is easy.

For this reason we are very careful about the language we use to describe what we do. For example we do not teach, we read. Because the basic skills we use are repeating and reading/speaking we can open up our people resources to more people than what we could provide if we were looking only for teachers.

Reading Volunteers and Language Learning Readers coming together to learn from each other

So you can see that the 1,2,3 Programme brings Reading Volunteers and Language Learning Readers together, we do not call them teachers and students because we are all learning about each other and our cultures in this shared reading process.

Learning is a dynamic vibrant activity. To keep learning as adults is like prolonging our time as children when learning was fun and effortless. As children we may have played by ourselves but more often than not we came together to play. Coming together in our differences is unpredictable and exciting. When we repeat read aloud together the Reading Volunteers enjoy learning about people from another culture just as much as the Language Learning Readers like reading the books.

It is together that we can promote sustainable communities

Also we promote community, sustainable communities. Sustainability is about setting up a continuous process of growth and learning. Sustainability means something that we can continue doing at no extra cost. Sustainability means for us being able to use the resources we already have in a more productive way. By bringing people together to share reading we can make better use of our library resources. By bringing people into the community through the library we can build our community even when we are strangers. Through repeat reading aloud together in the structured way we promote, people can come together in a constructive way to come to understand each other and build better community relationships.
