What is Dalcroze Eurhythmics? Named after its founder Emile Jaques-

Dalcroze (1865-1950), Dalcroze Eurhyth-

mics is a unique approach to music educa-

tion based on the premise that the human

body is the source of all musical ideas.

Dalcroze Eurhythmics provides a concrete

approach (movement) to an abstract art

(music). In learning about time and space,

energy, weight, and balance through

movement, we develop a framework with

which to approach the same elements in

music. Dalcroze Eurhythmics has a three-

part structure, consisting of Rhythmics

(which engages the whole body in the

physical exploration of musical rhythm,

melody, harmony, form, etc.), Solfège (the

study of pitch through ear training and

sight-singing) and Improvisation.

This Dalcroze Australia workshop is made possible by the support of the Heather Gell Dalcroze Foundation.

Re-Discovering

Dalcroze Who should attend the workshop? Anyone involved with creative expression will find themselves challenged, delighted and renewed by attending this workshop in music through move-ment with Australia’s two most highly qualified Dalcroze teachers. New-comers to Dalcroze may elect to attend the Taster Day or the three-day workshop. Those who have previous Dalcroze experience are eligible to attend the full five-day workshop, with the opportunity of taking an exam.

Program Taster Day (23 January). The Taster Day offers an opportunity for those just beginning their Dalcroze experience to gain an introduction to the Dalcroze approach. Sessions include movement preparation and rhythmics, ear training and voice work, improvisation, and a children’s demonstration class.

Three-Day Workshop (23-25 January). Attending the three-day workshop is highly recommended for those wishing to gain a fuller understanding of the Dalcroze approach and expand their knowledge and skills. Days 2 and 3 will build on the Taster Day with further sessions in movement preparation and rhythmics, ear training and voice work, improvisation, and a second children’s demonstration class.

Five-Day Workshop (21-25 January). The five-day workshop is open to those who have previous Dalcroze training, and will allow opportunity for more in-depth training. Those wishing to undertake exams may do so on Saturday 26 January.
