●Google is a tremendous search engine - It is very smart -can interpret "natural language" (i.e. plurals, misspellings,foreign words)

●BUT it can not always get the researcher to the end-userproduct BECAUSE of authentication and subscription!(Problem with Google Scholar as well!)

●“Deep Web” (i.e. searching for a plane or train ticket toParis at 20.00 tonight, or facsimiles of Franz Liszt)



●Not as “smart” as Google (although this is improvingwith various library software upgrades)●Start with KEYWORD search (Use NOUNS, not verbs,adjectives, pronouns or prepositions!)

●Basic principles:●Boolean (AND, OR, NOT)

●Truncation: uses stem of a word such as THEAT* retrieves

theater, theatre, theaters, theatres etc.) This is also called using

a WILDCARD: sometimes it is ‘?’ or ‘!’ or ‘*’

●Controlled vocabulary (index, thesaurus, Library of Congress

Subject Headings)



● English Collection (5th floor)Holds works and criticism on dramatists (i.e. Shakespeare (YH), Pinter (YQ

P65)

● Film and Media Collection (5th Floor)Has majority of historical, theoretical and critical coverage of theatre (YX)

by country (Britain, Italy) and by century.● But there are other areas such as Malcolm Morley Collection (theatre

history and stagecraft), Durning Lawrence Collection (Shakespeare/Baconauthorship controversy), first folios of Shakespeare.

● Area Studies (6th floor) United States, Commonwealth and Latin AmericanStudies.

● (e.g. David Mamet can be found NOT in (3) English as it is at (33) YTQM272. (33) is US Studies. (34) is Latin American Studies



Encyclopaedia/Dictionary databases (Oxford English Dictionary, Dictionary of National

Biography, Grove Art)

Bibliographic/Indexes databases which contain all of the types of material written about

a particular topic such as journal articles, books, conference proceedings, theses, reviews, etc.

(Periodicals Index Online, MLA Bibliography,Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, International

Index to the Performing Arts, World Shakespeare Bibliography)

Full-text databases which have the full article in PDF/HTML to view/download (JSTOR,

Academic Search Complete, JISC Historical Texts (includes EEBO), Times Digital, Proquest

Newspapers, IIPA: International Index to the Performing Arts, Nineteenth Century Collections

Online)

Citation Indexes which detail the ‘importance’ or ‘impact’ of particular article (Web ofKnowledge – Social Science Citation Index, Arts and Humanities Citation Index)

▪ *Databases blur these distinctions - Both Academic Search Complete and JSTOR have citation information on

‘more recent’ articles but not the full text (yet) because of moving wall . International Index to the Performing Arts(IIPA) indexes popular newspapers/journals AND has full text.

Has the resource been peer-reviewed?

● PURPOSE - Can you tell if there is any bias in thepresentation of the data? Is there objectivity?(e.g. think if a tobacco or pharmaceuticalcompany was funding the data study or Rupert

Murdoch’s tabs, Guardian, or The Independent )
