    renee attended school in Barr-ie, He enlistee!in' tbe 76th Battalion in 1915, going overse asthe following February. After a period ofservice in the ranks in France he joined 'theRoyal Flying COI'PS in 1917 and was COm-missioned with the Royal Air Foree in 1918.In France be served as a Pilot with the 24thFighter Squadron.Back in Canada after the 'war he became a.s-sociat.ed with the Canadian Air Board in 19H1and subsequently with the R,C.A.F. He was incharge of air operations on a sixteen monthmapping and reconnaissance expedition to the

    Hudson Straits in 192'7 and 1928. Later hevvas at Camp Borden and on liaison duty tothe R,A.F. at the Ah' Mirilatr-y in London, TheA.D.C. took an Army Co-operation course atOld Sarum in England and also had a part inearly ah' mail flying operations in the Mar i-times. Service at a number of stations fol-lowed before he went to Otta.wa as Director ofPlans and Operations shortly before the out-break of war.At Command Headquarters since April,

    1942, Ail" Vicc-Mursha! Lawrence arrived inthe capacity of officer-in-charge of adminis-tration with the rank of Group -Capt.ajn, Hewas appointed Air 'Commodore in June, 1942and became Air Officer Commanding in Jan-uary, 1[143, His promotion to Air Vice-Mar-shal took place last spring.

    For sure we thought the second issue wouldbe merely routine. The contributing staffknew exactly what we wanted, our organiza-tion was - we hoped - a closely integratedwhole. We thought that - for sure!Now that we are ready to go to press, we

    bitterly appreciate the fondness of ourdreams. Dear reader - whaf a time we'vehad! Some of your copy was splendid, read.the story which Sgt. Bodz has written aboutEquipment, it is a shining example of justwhat we want. Some of your copy, we regret-fully must say, was disappointing. Poorly'written contr-ibutions cause us a good deal ofextra work representing. many hours whichcould otherwise be spent improving Aer-Login a more effective way. We don't mean tobe too critieal because we are very glad toreceive your material, but of a few we justask that you spend a little more time on thefinishing touches to your copy - it wouldhelp a lot.But that's enough of fault-finding, we have

    more interesting things to talk about. Ourorganization didn't prove faultless after all,yet it did hang together in a weird and won-derful way. We want to tender our gratefulthanks to LAC Hancock who has proved tobe a pillar of strength and a darn good typist.There were others - not too nnmerous tomention-hut they know whom we mean, soonce again, thanks a lot, kids!We're introducing the "Features Section"

    this month. Itis to consist of your literarywork in the form of poems, short essays, pen-drawings and so on. Let's have more and mm'econtributions for this department. Howdnyou like the composite photograph in the"Special Events" section ;(another new addi-tion this month)? Itwas "awful expensive"but don't you think it was worth it? We arevery proud to be able to include F/L Kelshallas one of our contributors. What is more, hisarticle is to be a regular feature, and we canpromise that it will be as interesting as hisweekly-lectures. The graduating course willhave a page of its own each month. "For rea-SonS of security" - honestly - we are sorrythat- we may not publish a photograph of theentire class, in place of that a l'epl"eSentativegroup picture will be printed.Our pr-eserrt limit is sixteen pages~that

    your "eivies" out of storage to-night, or that;yon start arranging your packing tomorro"r.We have yet to face the worst of it - fromnow on the road will be mighty tough, but atthe end of the road will be home.What kind of a home - and we're speak-ing of Canada now -'- do yo'u want? Itwasn't

    perfect before the wa1' - what was wrong?What are you going to do abo-ut it? Whatare Canada's problems? What were theircauses? How can you .help to find theirsolution? How capable will you be of ac-cepting your duties, defending your rig.htsas a Canadian citizen? Indeed, what are yourduties, your rights?There's a war to .be won right now.. If

    you make sure of that first, then you. willhave the privilege of answering these ques-tions for yourself. Given that privilege, someof you won't bother with them, others willanswer them carelessly and some will think,and study, and learn, make careful, intelli-gent answer-s,Which are you going to do? You have beeu

    valuahle in defending a good Canada, willyou be as valuable in building a better one1

    first saw the light ofday in Dublin, Ire-land,At the outbreak of

    World War I, Mr.Michelson enlisted inthe Royal Irish lRiflesand reached the rankof sergeant before

    transferring to the Royal Flying COl'pS. Hewon his wings and the Lieutenant's Commis-sion and served in Belgium and France from1915 to 1918.

    March of the year following the Armisticefound F IL Michelson discharged from th,~R.A,F. and on his way to Canada to try hisluck in a new world. After so many yearsof military service the IR,.N.W.M.P. attractedhim to its ranks. He was promoted to Corp-oral and served at various northern out-posts.Craig Harbour on Ellesmere Island, mostNorterly post in the World, was his homefrom 1922 until 1927.On his return from the Arctic Circle he en-listed in the R.C.A.F. and spent four years as

    a flying instructor .at Camp Borden and Van-couver. When the RC.A.F. reduced itsstrength in accordance with peacetime policies

As F /0Michelson, he was posted to the west coastwith No. 4 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadronat Ucluc1et, B.C., and later 'transferred to'I'rerrton to become O. C. of the RefresherSquadron 'with a promotion to Flight Lieuten-ant,1941 saw F/L Michelson attain the rank of

Among our"keen-types" we have "Twinkletoes" Sullivanfrom Dundee, a real hep-cat; Geoff Watch-orn whose nose is habitually buried in Somemusty tome (C.A.P. 12.) and Frank Cooke andRigger Lynes, two skillful Canucks, whoseefforts have kept the R.A.F. from a win atfloor hockey.Lack of space prevents us from mention-

    ing more of these "keen-types", and besideswe must be on our way to visit two of thelads who used a Cessna for a quick trip toMaxwell House.

    Special 1J0en i4A.W.l Frankie IngramAmong the high-Itghts of the evening wasthe "Traditional Dance of the Islands" en-thusiastically interpreted by "A" Flight ofCourse 89 as the boys swayed their hips en-ticingly in grass skirts. "A" Flight againcame into the lime-light when LAC Burdtsgave a convincing portrayal of a young ladybathing, and FlO "Moose" Matthews playeda top-notch Master of Ceremonies, letting hishair down for the evening.General opinion favours more stage enter-

    tainment at our Station Dances. We shallhave to do something about this .

    OFFICERS' MESSFestive season celebrations started off with

    a sudden r-ush eady Chrj.stmas Eve. Informalnovelty dancing added to the amusement, ofall, mid gifts for the priae dancers weredistributed among the guests.Christmas day afforded the officers the

    opportunity of serving Dinner in the Air-~en's Mess -fun and frolic for everyone!New Year's Eve and Day revealed the

    results of detailed planning by FlO Hamilton,FlO MacLeod and many others. Each guestwas tagged for Identification purposes and.paper hats and novelties were popular as us-ual, kmong the guests entertained thisyear 'were many Para-Troopers and "M" De-pot personnel. FlO Roberts came forward onthe spur of the moment, to everyone's SUl'-prise; as a capable Master of Ceremonies,Quote: "You have to be smooth to be good."Unquote.New Year's Day was spent visiting around

    the st~tion and errtert.aining-, with time out tvparticipate in a delicious dinner prepared bythe staff.SERGEANTS' MESSThe cheer of "Good Old Home-LITe" was

    the theme of Christmas Eve in the Mess tbisyear. Itconsisted of an entirely informal get-together of friend and foe in the cozy aur-voundings of the lounge. Christina", Day waswell spent ent.erta ining- families and fr-iends,and dinner was served on Boxing Day. In-formal danc-ing added to the entertainment.Celebrated more zestfully, 'was New Year's

    Eve and Day: refreslunents were served in thelounge by the staff for whom. there was loudpraise, and 1944 was ushered in with a bang.Among the many guests present were theOfficers of the station, to whom there is astanding invitation, one of the oldest customsof the service.The Sergeant Cook was the only casualty

    and of course it was that old, old story aboutthe door-knob.CHRISTMAS DANCENot to be forgotten was our Christmas

    Dance held .midst cheer-y decorations, thanksto LAC Bronstein who did a grand job. En-tertainment was plentiful, and Father Christ-mas was there in the form of F IL Dunphy topi-eserrt numerous dancing prizes.

    KIDDIES' TREESanta Claus set up his office for No. 12 in

    the "Rec" Hall where he was visited by about200 'kiddies for their Christmas parcels. F/SLarry Paton, offtciattng- as Santa, was veryconvincing,A movie was shown much to the glee of the

    little folk, and lunch was served in the W. D.Canteen after which the children were muffleaaway home by attentive Mothers.CUPID'S D. R. O'sSanta was not only very good to us this

    year, but many trooped back home to No.12 with a promise for life on their finger.LAW Lahd now. wears a beautiful spark-

    ler. The lucky mall is Corporal Dick Shep-herd.Bride-Elect f'or the month of February is

    LAW Ruth Betts. "One would hardly bo-lieve it, it happened so quickly,"Ruth and LAC Morris Sweet have details

    down to perfection, The wedding is to takeplace in OUr own chapel. We shall be thereas. a mighty force, . Ruth and Morris - nowstop' quibbling!THE RHYTHMETTES AND COMPANYOn January 8th No. 12 played host to

    Flenrette McCuaig and her Concert Troupe.Judging f'rorn the enthusiastic reception withwhich this party was received, we are sureyou will be glad to hear that arrangementshave been made for the visit to our stationof a different troupe each month.The "chorus line" of the Rhythmettes took

    part in the first entertainment given outsideWinnipeg by a concert party. Little lRiaymondWebber, the "mascot" of the Troupe, has

    Flight Room Patter"The forgotten course", 89, feels that it 'hasworn out its welcome at No. 12, and at last,after delays, extensions and postponements,will be leaving on the 28th (they hope). Itisrumored that on graduation, members of thecourse will receive a new trade badge. Ofstriking design, the new badge carries a mop,a broom and a pail rampant on a field of linol-eum. Some particularly proficient members,recognized by the paint under their nails, hopeto get their- "A" group in interior decoration.A special award is being considered for thosekeen types: Jack "Short Circuit" Gardner,for his new delayed approach technique, Bar-ney Adair, for his candlelight slip-bombing ofthe east fence, and "Wheels Up" Fulcher, forremember-ing in time. And we vote a junior"Oscar" to Des Mayne for those technicolor,Movietone dreams."C" Flight extends a belated welcome to a

    new F'light Commander, FlO Jack McLeod,and to two new instructors, PIO Oldfield andPIO TyrelL "Barney" Oldfield is a mad Aus-tralian who will come down to earth in time.His beret has become the envy of all the in-structors. The period ended, a man has stretched,strained and strengthened every muscle inhis body. He has acquired more stamina.     On January the 6th the. hockey season open-ed at No. 12 with a decisive, victory for oursquad. The Army put up a very good showbut by superior stick handling and fastbreaking our boys ran up the score to 10-4.This game was followed by a close contestwith Virden which unfortunately ended in awin for them. The trouble seemed to be thatom two regular goalkeepers were unable tuattend. However, since this game a canvassof the station has been made and we now haveample protection in this spot.Personalities on the team include Harrison,formerly with Buffalo in the American Lea-

    gue; Don Morrison, formerly with SaskatoonQuakers; Sloan, who played considerable hoc-key aCl'OSS the line; Lieut. Sibbald of theCanadian Dental Corps.The team is handled by Capt, Goodison, an

    The W. D. basketball team has won allgames played to date, finishing on top of thefirst half of the schedule by a wide margin.We predict that ours will be the team to beatfor the cup.     to put in a plug for a few more players. Todate there are but seven active members onthe team. How about it, girls!     "we are fortunate in having on the station acouple of future pugilistic champions, "Bat.tl-ing" Steve Burke and John "Curly" St. Den-nis. The former, a lightweight, is an easternboy and has done some snappy boxing in andaround Toronto. The latter is a heavyweightand judging by his appearance in training beshould be right in there when it comes to out-pointing the opposition. Incidentally theseboys are handled by Mickey Larner, who is noslouch in the ring himself.

    game at Virden. Our boys returned withbruises, aches and experience. Chown wasthrown into the chairs three times, once pr'ac-tically landing on the C.O.'s lap. The gamewas definitely the toughest yet played by ourteam, but once again we were victoriousthrough the efforts of Wright, Chown, Huirand the rest of the boys.Incidentally, the coaching reins have been

M. is mighty proud of those"sparks" on his right arm - they representplenty of hard work and he is satisfied thatthey are worth the effort.     of how the Scharnhorst was intercepted by theescorting cruisers and destroyers as' it at-tacked a United Nations' convoy bound for theRussian port of Murmansk. In describing theday-long naval action and the subsequent.sinking of the German raider by the escortingunits assisted by the British battleship Dukeof York, the press gave us a "front-page"story, but not a complete story,North Cape lies above the Arctic Circle to-

    wards the "land of the midnight-sun"; but nosunlight bathes those dismal stretches of nor-them sea in the late days of December. Atbest a dim twilight may brighten the sea fora few hours and supply enough light to sil-houette prominent objects, Then the battlemust have been fought in semi or total dark-ness.How, then, did the Scharnhorst stalk the
