Projects Appreciated by R.I. : A student at Uswathun Hasana Maha Vidyalaya in Galle, Sri Lanka. This is one of 20 schools rebuilt through the Schools Reawaken project after the 2004 tsunami. The tsunami killed more than 30,000 people and displaced over 850,000 in Sri Lanka alone. District 3220, The Rotary Foundation, and Standard Chartered Bank supported the effort.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Yours,

2014-15 president,

Rotary International

When I see the work Rotarians do, I am always

impressed, always excited, and always inspired. When

I see the work of our New Generations, I am all of this

– and frequently I am surprised as well. Not by the

quality of their work – for I have learned to expect

great things from them – but by the creativity and

ingenuity of their thinking. I look at what they have

done and think not just "What a great job!" but "What a

great idea!" Because every generation sees the world

in a unique way, and every individual has a unique

point of view. Faced with the same problems, we

arrive at different solutions. This is why, in Rotary, our

diversity – of culture, language, expertise, gender, and

age – is our strength. In Rotary, we try to take the long view in our service. We aspire to serve in ways that will make a lasting difference, that will continue to have an impact after our participation ends. Our younger generations, in my experience, share this sentiment, and apply it globally, by focusing on environmental issues in new and innovative ways. When I became a Rotarian, environmental issues were barely on our radar. To young people today, these concerns are front and center. Their perspective is a valuable contribution to the world of Rotary service, and it is one that we should all encourage and support. Just as they are learning from us, so should we be learning from them. The young people who are serving in Rotaract and Interact, and participating in Youth Exchange and RYLA today, are the Rotarians of tomorrow. When we support them, we are supporting the future of our entire organization. We are helping to train the men and women who will be the club presidents, district governors, RI directors, and RI presidents of tomorrow.

ROTARACT CLUB OF KYIV, UKRAINE

Taras Mytkalyk started a Rotaract club as a way to get things done in his hometown of Kyiv, Ukraine. In the past year, his club raised money for an animal shelter, collected clothes for needy children, and visited a nursing home to boost the spirits of elderly residents. Members also gathered for poker nights, cookouts, and holiday parties.Mytkalyk believes in giving everyone in the club the opportunity to lead. Identifying a community need and finding a solution is empowering to members—and can have a noticeable impact. "Young people in Ukraine are attracted to this movement because they see the results of their work," he says. "There's no need to wait for somebody's approval or to go through bureaucratic procedures—they can just go out and do good, while having fun along the way."

: Students prepare to scale the climbing wall at the 2009 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards weekend held by District 6450 in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, USA. More than 80 students learned more about Rotary International and participated in activities that develop skills such as team building, problem solving, leadership, and communication.

SEPTEMBERNew Generation month

RYLARotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership development program run by Rotary. While participants can be any age, most events focus on secondary school students, university students, or young professionals. RYLA events are typically 3–10 days long and include presentations, activities,

and workshops that cover a variety of topics, including:•Leadership fundamentals and ethics • Communication skills•Problem solving and conflict management • Community and global

citizenship

Energize the next generation of community leaders with a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards event. RYLA gives your club the opportunity to develop young leaders while inspiring them to connect, exchange ideas, and take action in their schools and

communities. Rotary International has a long and successful history of providing service to youth. Each year, more than 250,000

young people participate in Rotary International youth programs such as Interact, Rotary Youth Exchange, and RYLA. In addition, many club and district mentoring programs, immunization efforts, job training programs, literacy projects, and other initiatives are designed specifi cally to help young people.

Through RYLA, you can help develop the qualities of leadership, citizenship, and personal development among young people in your community.

Ist it time for you to Reach out to a community in need?Work n'with youth in another country to develop a service project?Learn about the customs and culture of a far away place?Serve your local community?

New Generations and Service Projects

Involving youth and young adults in community service projects is one way for your club to get active in New Generations Service. Young people contribute to their communities every day through projects such as:

? Raising money to eradicate polio ? Volunteering to assist senior citizens? Organizing neighborhood cleanups or renewal projects? Holding food drives to benefit antihunger organizations? Working with organizations to hold career fairs? Holding AIDS/HIV awareness campaigns at colleges and universities? Cleaning and repairing bicycles to be donated to disadvantaged children? Visiting primary schools to talk about decision-making skills? Gathering community members for river or lake cleanup projects?? A successful collaboration on a service project may lead to increased interest in Rotary.

Interact: a service organization organized and sponsored by Rotary clubs for young adults aged 12-18. There are more than 12,300 Interact clubs in 133 countries.

Rotaract: groups organized by Rotary clubs apromote leadership, professional development, and service among young adults aged 18-30.

There are more than 8,000 Rotaract clubs in 167 countries.
