Chief Constable John Stoddart presents Dave Wigham with the award. A mountain rescue volunteer from Ferryhill has received a bravery award for the rescue of a man from the River Wear in Durham City. Dave Wigham, 46, who teaches at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College and is a member of Teesdale & Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team (TWSMRT), had just finished watching his son kayaking on the River Wear in August 2009 when he saw a group of rowers trying to support the body of a man in the water near the opposite bank. The man was face down and his head kept going under. Off duty police officer and scout leader Ian Dickinson, who was with Dave, im- mediately called the emergency services and ran downstream to use a bridge to get to the far bank. Dave said, "I realised the man needed urgent assistance so I decided to swim across to help him. I had recently been trained as a swiftwater rescue technician within the team so was happy this was within my capabilities". When Dave got to the casualty a quick assessment suggested he was still alive. Because of the steepness of the river banks at this point in the river he decided the best way to get him out was to swim with the current downstream. After about 100m a police officer threw a life belt which was put round the casualty. "This made it a bit easier to support the casualty as we swam and floated about 400m downstream,” said Dave. “I was then able to drag him over towards the steps at Baths Bridge where I was pleased to be able to hand him over to paramedics". Dave was presented with the Royal Humane Society Testimonial on Parchment, by John Stoddart, Durham Chief Constable, at Police HQ on Wednesday 8th December. After the ceremony Dave said "Because of my training within the Rescue Team I was confident I could assist this man without putting myself or anyone else in much danger. It is wonderful to be able to put my training to good use and for there to be such a positive outcome". TWSMRT Team Leader Chris Roberts said, "We are all very proud of Dave, what he did embodies the true spirit of Mountain Rescue". Despite the wintry weather the Mayor’s Charity Coffee Morning held on Wednesday 8th December at Chilton Workingmen’s Club was very well attended.Freshly-baked scones, cakes and mince pies were available along with refreshments. Also thanks to everyone who baked, donated and helped at the event. Special thanks to Alison and Sharon for organising the event.”A total of £140.32 was raised and will be added to

the fund. All monies raised are in aid of The Stroke As-sociation, James Cook Hospital (Botulinum Toxin Department) and the Chilton Christmas Lights Appeal. The next planned fundrais-ing event is the Valentines Charity Evening, scheduled for Friday 11th February at Chilton Working-men’s Club from at 7pm to 11.30pm. Tickets are £3.00 per person and are available from Chilton Town Council and Chilton Workingmen’s Club. Graham Leslie Deas was due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently to face two charges of possession of illegal drugs. On 30th September the 31 year-old of York Crescent, Newton Hall, Durham, had been found in possession of 0.5 grammes of cannabis in Durham City and of 2.2 grammes of cocaine in Ferryhill.

Barry Gray, aged 48 of Duncombe Terrace, Ferryhill, faces a charge of assaulting Craig Wayman in Ferryhill on 14th October, causing him actual bodily harm.Michelle Elizabeth McGonnell, aged 20 of Darlington Road, Feryhill and Samantha Jo McGonnell, aged 19 of Belsay Close, are jointly

charged with threatening unlawful violence towards others.Alexander John Rodgerson, of Babbacombe Drive, Ferryhill is charged with driving whilst over the legally-prescribed limit of alcohol. The 35 year-old is alleged to have driven a Peugeot 106 in Church Lane on 21st November.

Due in courtHayden James Price was warned by magistrates about his attitude, after he was made subject to another community order, with supervision, at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court. The 18 year-old pleaded guilty to stealing scaf-folding poles belonging to Balfour Beatty Utilities, who were erecting power lines in the Pine Road, East Howle area. Police witnessed Price loading his van from a field where the scaffolding was

kept and, on arrest, the youth had said to them that he wouldn’t do it again if released and that he had only wanted bits to make a pen for his puppies. However, Price, of Louvaine Terrace, Ferryhill, later admitted that he had intended weighing the items in for scrap. The court heard that Price was already subject to a community order of 120 hours of unpaid work for the theft of manhole covers.

Fighting many gloveless oppositionIn those days, the normal thing.

Had he lived in present timesHad he fought in recent days

He’d surely have met professionallyWith the Coopers and the ClaysBut with knuckle-over-knuckle,

Hands gnarled, twisted and grotesqueThese, the legacy of his early fights

Played out back-street and burlesque.

But this, to be his last ‘fight’Was destined to be in vain

Against a virulent contenderNo medication could restrain. The frailty of advancing yearsWith illness, and weak resolve

Forced Jim, the brave contenderTo retire his boxing gloves.

We’ll always remember uncle JimThough it was never meant to last

The hero of the boxing ringDistant echoes from the past.

Friday 17th December 2010Ferryhill & Chilton Chapter Issue 501 Page 7

School nativity plays remind us of the famous line, “There was no room for them at the Inn”. In desperation Mary and Joseph were forced to spend the night in a stable, there Jesus is born. As we celebrate Christmas this year many of us have the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of our homes, the company of our family and friends, a full table of food and drink. Let’s not forget who’s birth-day we celebrate at Christmas, maybe with the presents we share we can remember him too. What present can we give God? Let’s not leave him out in the cold any longer but welcome him into our

homes and ensure he has a place in our hearts. Let’s hold onto the spirit of Christmas which he brings not just for one day, but for 365 days.

We wish you peace and warmly invite you to our Christmas Services

Civic carol service Former Ferryhill teacher opens art exhibitionA former head of Science is exhibiting a collection of his artwork at the McGuinness Gallery at Bishop Auckland Town Hall in December.Olly Burton, a retired science teacher who taught at Ferryhill Comprehensive School for 25 years, is now a volunteer guide at Durham Cathedral. He has also been it’s unofficial artist and cartoonist for the past 15 years.“The cathedral is a very jolly place, we get a lot of laughs there” said Mr Burton, telling of the inspiration for his many creations. The exhibition features a range of his illustrations he has created for books, magazines, greetings cards, even theatre sets and animated cartoons. There is also a 2D figure of a stonemason at Durham

Cathedral – in Olly’s opinion the best cathedral on the planet – as a contrast to the majority of his pen and wash work.Mr Burton says he is partic-ularly keen on townscapes, buildings, knights in armour

and canals. He added, “The exhibition looks good, I am pleased with it.”The gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturday. The exhibitions runs until 24th December.

Olly’s work will be on display at the Town Hall in Bishop Auckland until Christmas Eve.

The wintry weather caused difficulties for Dean David Howe when his solicitor’s car problems meant that his case at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court was to be held over until the afternoon. However, as Howe had a doctor’s appointment scheduled, the case was adjourned until 15th

December. The 21 year-old of Chester Crescent, West Cornforth, faces charges of criminal damage and disorderly behaviour. Both charges relate to incidents on 26th November in West Cornforth, when it is alleged the bumper of a police vehicle was damaged.

Case delayed
