Early lifeBhe born on 29 th april,1848 @ Kilimanoor palace (Kerla) as son of Umamba Thampurati & Neelakandan Bhattathiripad

Inborn talent of him revealed at early ages At age of 7,he started drawing on the palace walls using charcoals. His uncle noticed talent & gave preliminary lessons At 14, he was taught water painting by palace painter Rama Swamy Naidu After 3 yrs, Theodor Jenson, British painter, taught him oil painting

Specialties'It is Ravi Varma who 1st started painting of Hindu deities with PROPORTIONATE BODIES,clearly drawn , with neat features, apropriate ornaments, & with naturally appealing colours Prior to that the Indian paintings were crudely drawn & often disproportionate & rough.

Not only painting skills but CREATIVITYWhile drawing, he used to maintain the discriptions given in scriptures about deities Like, four hands holding a conch in one, lotus in other weapon in third etc.

About his pictures

His paintings are considered among the example of fusion of Indian traditions with the techniques of Europian academic arts. During hi lifetime, he s most remembered for his beautiful, SARI clad, graceful women. He particular noted for his depicting episodes from epics such as Ramayana ,Mahabharata & many Puranas.

Ravi Varma s representations of mythological characters has become a part of Indian imaginations.

In 1873, he won the First prize at the Madras paintings exhibition. He became world famous Indian painter after winning in 1873 Vienna exhibition. Later on he started The Ravi Varma Press in Bmbay 1894 for the mass production of the pictures & to make them available for common man.

Such a great history painter died in 2 nd october 1906 He is considered among the GREATEST painters in the history of Indian art.

To recognize his immense contribution kerla govt. has instituted awards in his name for considerable works in field of art & culture.
