Lest we forget At Dalston, Cumdivock, Raughton Head and Wreay we will hold solemn acts of remembrance on Remembrance Sunday at 11.00 am. We do this because it is important not to forget. We are at a turning point in the memory of our nation: The 1st World War ended 101 years ago and the last of our veterans have died. The 2nd World War ended 74 years ago. The Korean, Falklands, Gulf, Afghanistan Wars and other conflicts have given us more sacrifices to commemorate and remember but we are at a point where we have fewer folk with living memories of the World Wars and this means that we have to choose not to forget. On the first Remembrance Sunday people gathered to think primarily of their sons, their brothers, their friends and fathers, now when we gather many of us are thinking of Grandparents and Great Grandparents, so why is it important that we should not forget? We do commemorate sacrifice; we do not always understand the motives of those who died but we do understand their loss. However, when we say "Lest we forget," we also mean so much more. We remember those who died but we also remember the horror of war. If we have any memory or knowledge of history we think of the huge harm caused by nations taking up arms against other nations. We think of the great loss of young life in the armed forces and the destruction of lives at home. We say "Lest we forget," to remember that we should fight for peace, to remember that we should be politically involved and that we should combat fascism before it becomes too late. We say "Lest we forget" so that we remember to join the struggle for civilisation and keep our nations and our people at peace. If you wish to commemorate the sacrifice of the fallen this year then I encourage you to engage with your society, with your community to create and sustain peace. As Edmund Burke was once thought to have said "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Each of us have this choice; to wait and watch or to get involved before things go too far. Harvest Festival There was a full church for the united Harvest Festival at All Saints, with Songs of Praise, followed by a bring and share lunch. Thank you to everyone who decorated the church, it looked beautiful, with the flowers and greenery, with lots of donations of fruit and vegetable, which was gratefully accepted by the Hospice, and the donations for the food bank. Doreen Hallsworth took the service. We sang the well-known harvest hymns, Come ye thankful people come and We plough the fields and scatter. Songs of Praise were chosen by Ann Byers, Linda Farnaby and Heather Metcalfe, giving their reasons for their choice. There was a video of the school children singing the Harvest Tango. Stained Glass Windows My retirement hobby of making photo-records of stained (SG) glass windows has led me to being recruited as a volunteer photo-archivist and researcher by various organisations and Trusts dedicated to the recording and preservation of SG windows, and to becoming a member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters Trust, (BSMGPT). All the windows in All Saints are fine examples of the SG craft that existed in the late Victorian and Edwardian period, and are in excellent condition but so far I have not been able to identify the name of the artists or firms responsible for their design, as none appear to be signed, nor are the names mentioned on various websites relating to All Saints or Raughton Head. The window (The Agony in the Garden, Luke 22:42, with Christ holding the cup of sorrow) is particularly intriguing as the design is unlike any I have come across in the nearly four years that I have been pursuing my hobby and therefore gives no clue to compare it with other windows attributed to known artists/firms. I am seeking advice on any likely sources of such information such as Parish records, etc. Are the dates on which dedication services were held for each window on record, as old newspaper reports of such services occasionally contain a description of the window and the name of the artist or SG firm, as well as the benefactor who donated the window the Minister who conducted the service etc? Update If the "Agony in the Garden" window turns out be by Ballantine’s of Edinburgh, one of Scotland's leading SG firms from the mid 1850s to 1940 with 4 generations of the Ballantine family involved, which my contact at NADFAS has suggested as a possibility, I will certainly feature this window in my next presentation to the Scottish Stained Glass Symposium as the subject matter is quite rare, and must have been created special order. Ultra Marathon 13 – St Bees to Carlisle Mark Calder is raising money for Iraqi refugees to go back to their homeland and rebuild their war-torn country. This year he set himself the challenge of running 14 ultra marathons along pilgrimage routes across Scotland and the North of England. He will be running through our area on the evening of 7th November, starting from St Bees Priory at 7.00 am. and expecting to get to Carlisle Cathedral by 11.00 pm. A rough timetable of this St Bega’s run is that he hopes to reach Keswick by 3.00 pm. then St Bega’s Church, Bassenthwaite by 5.00 pm. Caldbeck by 7.30 pm. going on to Sebergham, Bell Bridge, Bog Bridge, Rose Bridge, (probably 9.30 pm. by this stage), on to Dalston and Carlisle. Stockdalewath Weather – September 2019 With regard to rainfall September rather repeated the pattern of July. It started dry and seemed as if it may end up below average, only for the last few days to be extremely wet. Apart from the 33.7 mm on the 30th, 28.9 mm was recorded for the 27th. So we ended up with almost double the average. The figure of 141.975 mm is the 2nd highest I have recorded here in September, the highest being as recently as 2012, with 143.45 mm. The rainfall figure could have been worse if it hadn’t been for a generally sunny week from the 14th, giving a couple of days at the end of the week which became warm and were generally cloudless. There were no extremes with the average temperatures but it is worth noting that the minimum has being showing a continuous slight increase since 2012. This suggests generally cloudier night-time conditions over the period, as the average maximum has remained virtually identical over the same period. It was not a particularly sunny month. Apart from the short period around the 20th, where the days remained virtually cloudless, there were only 3 days where there was appreciable sunshine. However there were only 2 totally sunless days. The figure of about 150 hours of sunshine is a little better than 2018, being a little more than a ⅓ of the maximum. Raughton Head C of E Primary School We have had a very busy first half of Autumn Term and it is great to see how well everyone has settled in and getting along so well. The PTA met recently and as a school we are always so grateful to all their hard work to help raise funds for the school to ensure it remains a happy, vibrant place to learn. It goes without saying that a lot of these events could not happen without community support so I would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to all that have helped in whatever way, especially in donating items for our auction, buying 120 club numbers and managing to attend events. The School Council have agreed to add their own thoughts... At school this term our topic has been 'Seasons'. In the Juniors, we have enjoyed painting and colouring the leaves for the display. In our science lessons, we have been learning about electricity and we have been creating electrical circuits to light up bulbs and make buzzers buzz! We are looking forward to the run up to Christmas as we are visiting Theatre by the Lake to watch a Christmas play. We are also looking forward to doing some first aid training because we think it is very important to learn about how to keep everybody safe. In the Infants, everyone has settled into our school really well and made lots of friends. The children have enjoyed decorating the display boards with all their beautiful artwork and fantastic writing. In the Nursery, the children have been playing in the water, mixing colours to paint tigers and moulded hedgehogs out of clay and matchsticks. They have also recently been to Tullie House to learn about Florence Nightingale. Keep an eye on our website calendar for more community events in the future. Raughton Head W.I. – September When out and about, do we truly spare a thought of what is beneath our feet. We may be on the road, on the pavement, walking through grass or wading through the mud, but what is really below us? Well if we were to go a little deeper we would find a very different world, that of minerals and it was our speaker Ian Tyler who opened up this world of minerals and mining. Ian was the owner of the Cumbria Mining Museum where he had spent many years building up his collection. He has written many books on the subject of mining and minerals and has won the Cumbria Book of the Year three times. His expertise on the subject has led him to appear on television. As a mine historian his knowledge is extensive. Cumbria with particular reference to Caldbeck has been important for lead, copper and iron ore since the time of Queen Elizabeth I and was known as one of the best mining areas known at that time. There was copper in the Caldbeck hills plus lead and silver which was claimed by the Queen. Lead was used for bullets and cannon balls. The list of minerals was exhaustive. In the 16th Century the Germans after walking 1000 miles to get here established a successful mining industry around Keswick. Like all industries mining has faced success and decline. Ian brought many samples of different minerals for us to see and feel and showed slides which helped us to understand the intricacies of removing these minerals from the earth beneath us. Although many of Ian’s books were about minerals and mining he has written on other subjects, in particular the RAF in Cumbria. Ian gave a very interesting and informative talk and I think we were all rather surprised to the extent and history of mining in our area. Very interesting and with Ian’s interjections of humour, a very enjoyable talk. A Vote of Thanks was given by Felicity Coulthard. Due to the subject matter we opened our meeting up and were pleased to see a few men joining us for the evening. Everyone enjoyed their refreshments and it was a good opportunity to look at Ian’s books that he had brought along. Following this we settled down to complete the business of the evening. Ian had judged our competition which was ‘A Stone’. The winner was Vera Harris, 2nd was one our guests Roy May and 3rd Janet Preston. Our raffle winner was Nancy Alty.
