The Martinez News -
Gazette has been
continually serving
the county seat for over 150
years, making it one of the
oldest newspapers in Cali-
fornia. Throughout that
time, it has honored its com-
mitment to Martinez’s citi-
zens by bringing local
residents everything they
needed to know about their
town and beyond.
The paper’s first issue
appeared on Sept. 18, 1858.
At the time, Martinez was
not only the county seat, but
also the only town in the
county, kept alive and thriv-
ing by its proximity to the
water and railroad lines. Its
activity also attracted many
county officials and promi-
nent citizens to make their
homes there. The Gazette
served this constituency by
delivering accurate news of
community happenings, so-
cial events, and government
occurrences.
First published as the
Contra Costa Gazette, the
newspaper was owned by
W.B. Soule and Company, a
group of local citizens con-
cerned with providing the
county with its first news out-
let. When Soule misappropri-
ated all the funds for the

company, the sponsors persevered, selling
to another publisher and keeping the news-
paper in business without missing an issue.
Prior to the installation of the transcon-
tinental telegraph in 1861, the Gazette re-
ceived national and international news via
a steamer from Panama, or travelers com-
ing through the Northern California town.
But with the advent of the new technology,
the Gazette was able to provide citizens
with up-to-date news of happenings clear
across the country, including updates on the
then-broiling Civil War. In its early days,
the Gazette documented Martinez’s pro-
gressive spirit through its introduction of
street lights, a gas plant, water works and a
sewage system. It also recorded Martinez’s
role as one of the first areas of California
to support a telephone exchange.
In 1861, the paper moved for several
years to Pacheco, then hailed as the “town
of the future” because of the wide-open
business prospects there. There, the paper
persevered through various struggles, in-
cluding an 1868 earthquake that badly
damaged its office. Even in 1871, when a
disastrous fire in the newspaper’s building
destroyed all its contents and the press, the
Gazette carried on, securing a new press in
under 48 hours and producing a paper in
time for its regular day of issue. In its entire
history, the newspaper has never missed a
single edition.
When Pacheco business dwindled, the
Gazette moved back to Martinez in 1878,
occupying a building on Main Street. From
there, it produced the newspaper on what
was then the height of technology – a
water-powered press.
Over the years, the newspaper oper-
ated under several different names, includ-
ing the Daily Gazette, the Morning
News-Gazette, and now the Martinez
News-Gazette. But whatever name it oper-
ated under, the newspaper has remained
faithful to its readership for over a century
and a half, for many years serving as one
of the largest employers in the area, sup-
porting a payroll of dozens.
With its thriving marina, bustling
downtown and active court system, Mar-
tinez has survived as a town with a storied
past and a bright future, and the Gazette has
been there to cover it every step of the way.
From local issues like the Martinez beavers
and downtown restructuring to all informa-
tion concerning the county’s busy govern-
ment center, competitive local sports and
thriving arts scene, the Martinez News-
Gazette is the people’s first choice for news.
