raPidoBat® General information

the product

H-BAU’s RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes provide a column formwork system for easily and economically manufacturing round and rectangular columns. The casing tubes consist of multi-layered, extremely robust paper and cardboard rolls.

In addition, the shuttering tubes can be specially treated depending on the demands on the exposed concrete and the architect’s requirements.

Depending on the client’s wishes, the columns can be produced with a barely visible spiral marking for subordinate structures such as cellars or underground car parks, for example, or for high-quality exposed concrete columns, such as those used in residential buildings.

raPidoBat® cretcon hd Thanks to its new, certified internal coating, the innovative RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD shuttering tube provides a high-density concrete surface. With its active, absorbent Cretcon HD coating, the exposed concrete column acquires a previously unachievable, high-quality concrete surface.

raPidoBat® Winner of the 2013 innovation Prize

Shapelier, better, pore-freeThe architect cheers the new surface aesthetics of exposed concrete columns. The practician has no al-ternative when calling for tenders. And the control-ler appreciates the additional performance for equal production costs. With its innovative, activatable hy-drogel formwork skin the RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD shuttering creates a unique concrete surface.

The innovation leading the way where previous cli-ents – and other protagonists of perfect exposed concrete architecture – had their reservations be-cause of irritating pores, cavities and mottling.

The official test certificate issued by Dresden Technical University‘s Institut für Baustofftechnik (Institute for Construction Materials Technology) confirms the ex-cellent results achieved by RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD.

Standard cardboard shuttering tubes provided with a synthetic film insert were compared to the new, jointless RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD pipes in a techni-cal evaluation.

During the first test run, concreting A, technically incorrect concreting was carried out.

In a further concreting run, concreting B, the RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD casing pipe was correctly concreted. To make conditions more difficult, which was only of limited suitability for producing high-quality exposed concrete elements, was used in or-der to emphasis the performance of this H-BAU in-novation.

Pore-free surface without cosmetic improvements

The overall impression of finished columns by using RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD casing pipes provides a very uniform colouring and a matt surface. Mottling is practically imperceptible.

To achieve the best porosity class P4 (lowest per-centage of pores) the cumulated pore area visible on the surface may not exceed the limit value of 750 mm2. The test surface measures 500 x 500 mm.

Despite the enhanced demands on exposed concre-te classification the results confirm the overall im-pression (see Figure 1):

■ Concreting A: despite the unprofessional con-ditions the RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD specimen

achieved the required limit of 750 mm2 with a clear margin of safety.

■ Concreting B: processing under appropriate con-creting, however, using only partially suitable con-crete, RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD is able to produce a nearly pore-free concrete surface.

Pore counting on the RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD spe-cimens, concreting B, resulted in an average pore area of 22 mm2. This is less than 3% of the maxi-mum allowable 750 mm2 pore area. Cosmetic post-treatment is no longer necessary. This allows reliable and absolutely unchallengeable classification into porosity class P4.

The shuttering design means the specimens meet the highest demands of the classifications specified in the DBV „Exposed concrete“ fact sheet.

In contrast to the standard pipe, RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD shuttering tubes do not have formwork skin joints and can therefore be unquestionably classified into formwork skin joint class AF4.

colour uniformity

The colour of the specimens is so uniform that they achieve the highest classification, FT3, compliant with the DBV „Exposed concrete“ fact sheet.

Because all surface characteristics can easily be allo-cated to the highest DBV „Exposed concrete“ fact sheet classifications, the RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD specimens achieved the highest exposed concrete class, SB4 (see Table 1). The very low number of po-res is particularly noteworthy. Using the innovative RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD, exposed concrete class 4 can therefore be achieved easily and above all very reliably.

So new and already award-winningThe idea of an activatable hydrogel formwork skin, which the RAPIDOBAT® Cretcon HD pipes are provi-ded with, even convinced the top class jury of the 2013 Concrete Element Supplier Industry‘s Innovati-on Prize. At the 57th BetonTage convention in Ulm, Germany, they awarded H-BAU the 2013 Innovation Prize.

the product

RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes for rectangular reinforced concrete columns consist of high-quality wound paper layers.

The specially coated medium-density fibreboard inserts in the RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes provide a perfect concrete surface. The square and rectangular designs are chamfered at the corners.

The inner and outer liners of the RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tube are impermeable to water, allowing the shuttering tube to maintain its shape, even in driving rain.

transport

■ Avoid pressure points.

■ Do not stack pipes too high.

■ Cover damaged outer liners generously with adhesive tape.

Storage

■ Store vertically where possible.

■ Ensure a level, clean substrate for horizontal storage.

■ Avoid high stresses.

■ Keep dry.

■ Protect from rising damp.

■ Keep cool.

■ Provide ventilation when covered.

Preparation

■ Adapt column reinforcement, including spacers, to suit column formwork, ensuring that the inner surface of the shuttering tube is not damaged.

■ Remove any pools of water around the column.

erecting and aligning

■ Check RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tube for damage.

■ Always erect shuttering tube with arrow pointing up.

■ Immobilise the bottom of the shuttering tube, e.g. using a wooden annulus. Refer to page 19.

■ Align shuttering tube with the aid of RAPIDO-Clamp, type D, M or P. Avoid pressure points.

■ Cover the top of the shuttering tubes with plastic sheeting until concreting begins.

■ The wall thickness of the RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes means they are designed to withstand all the vibrations and stresses imposed by an internal vibrator.

Stripping

■ Strip formwork after approx. 48 h.

■ Open shuttering tube using ripcord.

■ Carefully cut the cover liner in the region of the ripcord using a knife.

■ Wind the ripcord around a hammer shaft and pull vigo-rously.

■ Open the shutter-ing tube and re-move it. The shut-ter ing tube can then be repositio-ned around the column as protect-ion.

■ RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tubes can be disposed of in the paper recycling unit.

■ Score the Cretcon HD coating along the former location of the ripcord using a knife to create a predetermined breaking point.

■ Push an insulation anchor or a plastic nail – also referred to as a pine cone – up behind the Cretcon HD coating and pull downwards.

■ Do not use sharp objects.

Securing the raPidoBat® shuttering tubes

Up to a shuttering tube length of 5.00 m the shuttering tube can be secured using a single guy plane. Additional guy planes must be used for shuttering tube lengths greater than 5.00 m. If heavy tension-compression props are used for guying, we recommend installing additional, short pieces of shuttering tube beneath the RAPIDO-Clamp elements. This prevents pressure points on the shuttering tube and the concrete column.

The lower RAPIDOBAT® shuttering tube support can be easily provided by a wooden annulus (may be cut using a template), tightly surrounding the outside of the pipe. Where larger formwork diameters are used, we recommend providing the shuttering tube with an approx. 10 cm high wooden annular base.

RAPIDOFIX was specially designed for aligning the RAPIDOBAT® Square and Rectangle models: simple, practical, good. Refer to page 17.
