The Mission of the Rankin County Chamber of Commerce is to create an environment which promotes business and education, develops leadership,
and enhances the quality of life throughout Rankin County.
Our Mission
Spring is Here (Believe It or Not!)
The late, well-known American journalist Hal Borland wrote, “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.” Despite freezing temperatures in the last full week of March, spring is officially here, and your Chamber of Commerce has been hard at work these past few months. We, like spring, are determined not to miss any opportunities for growth and change. I would like to share with you about a new program that we started this past year. In the summer of 2013, Michelle Rhodes of the Rankin County Youth Detention
Center approached the Chamber about starting Project Impact, a Leadership program for at-risk youth of Rankin County. Since this seemed like an excellent complement to our already flourishing Youth Leadership and Adult Leadership programs, we, as a board, enthusiastically and immediately gave our Executive Director Mandi Arinder the thumbs-up to pursue this further. Little did we know that with this decision we would be creating an avenue for these young adults to change their lives.
Mandi worked with Michelle, Debbie Blackwell of BankPlus, our Leadership Vice President for the year, and me to design a program similar to our Youth Leadership program, but with more supervision and practical ideas for these teenagers’ specific needs. As a group, they visited the State Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, the MS Air National Guard Base, Hinds Community College, and many other places throughout our County that they normally would have never had the opportunity to experience. In addition to that, they were visited frequently by their mentor, Dr. Jim Cook of JABC Educational Leadership Services, who challenged them at every corner about their past and future decisions.
Project Impact was funded with your help and with help from others in the community that considered it to be a need. We will soon have a professional evaluation of the program, and we will begin the process of applying for grant money so that we can continue reaching at-risk teens in our community in the coming years. We will still need your help, though, to make this program bigger and better for the young people that will come through it in the years to come. Please consider partnering with us either financially or by donating your time to be with these students as they go through the program. I can assure you that as we help provide them the chance for a fresh start, their lives are not the only ones that will be affected.
