Abstract from Thesis

“Behaviour and Autecology of the Endemic Fijian Butterfly Papilio schmeltzi, with a Comparative Phylogenetic Study of Pacific Papilio Species” The endemic Fijian swallowtail butterfly Papilio schmeltzi is widely distributed throughout the Fiji Islands. The open and closed population analysis generated from mark-release-recapture surveys show that the population occurs at low densities and is much lower during the hot/wet season. Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) provided valuable distribution patterns for P. schmeltzi that can be used to assess its conservation status and is crucial to any conservation efforts. OpenModeller and MaxEnt models were used to identify suitable habitat areas under current climatic conditions and MaxEnt models also provided suitable habitat areas under future climatic conditions. MaxEnt estimated 3,059.83 km2 as suitable habitat for P. schmelt-zi and OpenModeller estimated 8,206.69 km2. Results from the SDM were then used to identify sites of priority that could be conserved to protect this iconic species. Molecular analyses (mitochondrial and nuclear data) determined the phylogenetic relationships between P. schmeltzi and other southwest Pacific Papilio species. The genus Papilio show paraphyletic relationship in subgenus Princeps (Princeps, Druryia and Menelaides). Papilio schmeltzi is not closely related to Papilio amynthor and Papilio godeffroyi as previously hypothesized in morphological studies. Papilio schmeltzi was thought to be the only species of Papilio to occur in Fiji, until the recent discovery of another endemic species, named Papilio natewa, in Fiji in 2018. Molecular analyses identified Papilio anactus as the closest phylogenetic relative of P. natewa, whereas P. schmeltzi is distantly related to P. natewa. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences recovered nine distinct haplotypes for P. schmeltzi between island populations. More genetic divergence occurred between Vanua Levu, Vanua Balavu and all others (Koro Island, Moala, Ovalau, Kadavu, Yasawa Islands, Sigatoka, Suva and Taveuni). Papilio schmeltzi and P. natewa butterflies are not listed under the IUCN Threatened Swallowtail Butterflies of the World listing but are vulnerable due to restricted range and sensitivity to changes in land use. Geospatial analyses and extensive ecological information indicate a need to reassess the conservation status of P. schmeltzi. This knowledge can help in the development and implementation of effective conservation measures.

Reema PRAKASH (Fiji) Abstract from Thesis

“Physiological studies of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) for potential yield and fruit quality enhancement”

Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) plant is a significant source of traditional Polynesian medicine. Noni fruits are widely used as a medicine source and its juice is explicitly promoted and marketed internationally for its high antioxidant properties. Noni plants are renowned for surviving in a wide range of environmental conditions which include infertile, acidic and alkaline soils, flooded areas, extremely dry areas, and saline areas. Noni thrives in the wild in some Pacific Island countries and due to its wide environmental tolerance range, it presents a promising agricultural export crop for the region. Growth and development of all plants are primarily affected by their physiological processes, and lack of knowledge about noni’s physiological responses currently limits its productivity enhancement as a potentially significant crop. This study presents new information on growth and physiological responses (photosynthesis, transpiration, instantaneous water use efficiency, stomatal conductance, stomatal density, leaf area, and abscisic acid levels) of noni under changing environmental conditions and its effects on fruit production, quality (size, weight and total soluble sugars) and the antioxidant properties (antioxidant capacity and total phenol content). This study investigated germination and establishment of noni under changing moisture conditions, its growth, physiological performance, and fruit quality in different agro-climatic zones in Fiji, and under changing salinity conditions; and physiological responses and fruit characteristics in different natural environments. Fruiting and flowering response of plants to foliar fertilization were also explored. Findings show that noni’s germination, growth, physiological responses, and survival are strongly influenced by environmental variations, which subsequently affects fruit quality and antioxidant levels. When introduced to environmental stress, the physiological responses of noni are similar to any other plant. However, under long term exposure to stress, the plants showed remarkable alterations to its physiological processes which justify its capability to thrive in extensive variety of environments. The antioxidant properties of noni were maximal in a moderately stressed environment without significant reduction of growth and yield. Foliar fertilization improved noni’s flowering and fruiting. This study lays the foundation for further improving noni’s growth, productivity, yield and enhancing its antioxidant levels to meet the demands of its global health supplement market.

Doctor of Philosophy in GeographyRerekura Victoria Ann-Ette TEAURERE (Cook Is) Abstract from Thesis

“The influence of Cook Islands tourism accreditation scheme on sustainable solid waste practices in Rarotonga’s accommodation industry ”

Tourism is a highly consumptive industry and a significant generator of solid waste (SW). Consequently, the accommodation industry is argued to have a Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) to contribute to sustainable destination development by implementing sustainable Solid Waste Management (SWM) into business practices. Accommodation industry certification schemes are argued to have the potential to reduce SW generated in accommodation businesses. Rarotonga in the Cook Islands is fast reaching a SW crisis and with growing tourism numbers there is urgent need to reduce SW generation. This research contributes to the limited literature on CER in the accommodation industry of Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through determining the role of the Cook Islands tourism accreditation scheme in improving SWM practices through compliance and providing a collaborative foundation for sustainable SWM practices in Rarotonga’s accommodation industry. The research uses a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews, focus groups and observation. Crystallisation and thematic data analysis is applied. Accommodation industry individualism, profit maximisation, skewed power dynamics, the facilitation of the accreditation scheme, lack of trust, divergent constructions of the SW issue, and managers’ cultural differences, were all found to contribute to the reducing the schemes influence on industry-wide sustainable SWM. The research findings challenge current discourse on traditional connections to land and environmental stewardship in indigenous entrepreneurship, which suggests customary land connection is linked to land stewardship practices. Emotional connection to land were found to be strongly influential in accommodation managers’ choices to implement sustainable SWM in their accommodation businesses. The research findings caution against increasing foreign investment and indicates a need for stronger environmental regulation and enforcement on accommodation industry CER. The research further contributes to sustainable development in Pacific SIDS through the expansion of the environmental citizenship theory and insights into the importance of expanding the disruptive innovation theory.

Doctor of Philosophy in Management and Public AdministrationShavneet SHARMA (Fiji) Abstract from Thesis

“Modelling cross-national heterogeneity in purchasing travel online: Extending the UTAUT2 model”

The tourism and hospitality industry has changed drastically with rapid developments in information and communications technology. The literature on multicultural studies suggests that behavioral models do not hold universally across national cultures. Recognizing the limited applicability and generalizability of extant cross-national studies in the tourism and e-commerce context, this study aims to gain cross-national insights into the antecedents of consumers’ intention to purchase travel online. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model is used as the theoretical foundation of this study. Data collection in Fiji and Australia was conducted using online questionnaires. SPSS 26 and AMOS 26 were utilized to conduct covariance based-structural equation modeling (CB-SEM). Findings indicate that the main predictors of customers’ online travel purchase intention in Fiji are performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, price-saving, customer innovativeness, perceived trust and perceived risk. Looking at the perceived risk factors for the Fiji sample, perceived financial risk, time risk, social risk, privacy risk and psychological risks have a significant impact on respondents’ overall risk perception. However, the Australian sample’s main predictors of purchase intention are performance expectancy, social influence, price-saving, habit, attitude, customer innovativeness, perceived trust, and perceived risk. Perceived financial, time, performance, and privacy risks impacted Australian participants’ overall risk perception. Looking at the country differences, the impact of performance expectancy, perceived time risk, perceived privacy risk, perceived trust, and customer innovativeness on purchase intention is stronger for the Australian sample. On the other hand, perceived financial and overall risk has a stronger influence on the Fiji respondents. Social influence, habit, perceived performance risk, and attitude are only significant with the Australian sample, while hedonic motivation perceived social risk and perceived psychological risk is only significant with the Fiji sample. The results highlight the complex cognitive mechanisms influencing acceptance of online travel purchases in each country moderated by national culture. The findings are important for researchers and practitioners in better understanding the differences in customer’s online travel adoption behavior between a developing and a developed country.

Doctor of Philosophy in SociologyCasandra Cleo HARRY (Trinidad and Tobago) Abstract from Thesis

“Post-conflict institution building interventions: a study of stakeholder perceptions of the contributions of regional assistance mission to the Solomon Islands (Ramsi) to police reform in the Solomon Islands”

Much scholarly attention has been placed on studying the period of ethnic conflict in the Solomon Islands and examining the role of the RAMSI in re-establishing safety and security in the nation’s capital. A key component of the mission’s agenda was the reform of the local police force, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF). While several interesting areas have been explored, ranging from investigating the cause of the crisis to assessing the mission’s impact, scant attention has been placed on examining, interpreting, and presenting the experiences and perceptions of institutional change held by officers within the RSIPF. In light of this deficiency, this study aimed to explore police officers’ perceptions of reform, the factors that accounted for these perceptions and to discover how these perceptions changed at the end of reform. In an attempt to do so, the phenomenological research method was used to investigate, identify and describe common perceptions regarding how police officers experienced institutional reform. The study utilised semi-structured in-depth interviews with eighteen (18) RSIPF officers with service ranging between fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) years, from diverse provinces, ranks and departments. The research found that officers had a largely positive perception of the mission and institutional transformation for reasons including Australia’s leading role in the mission, capacity development within the force and the return of public trust and confidence to the RSIPF. However, despite this perception, a number of areas of concern and for redress were identified.

2021 The first three panels represent, in order from top, FIJI ISLANDS, TONGA,

and SAMOA. In each case the central motif was adopted from a traditional tapa of each country. While the motifs appear to be stylised flower or star patterns, the symbolic significance of these ancient designs has long since been lost. This is also true of the more geometric elements of the border patterns. Other inspirations are more obvious: the Fijian comb pattern features at the top and the bottom of the entire tapa; frigate birds are between the panels for Fiji and Tonga; and cannibal forks feature between the Tonga and Samoa panels.

The fourth panel represents SOLOMON ISLANDS and has as its main motif a lengga nut design from a kap-kap shell ornament, which is traditionally worn around the neck. The striated triangles at the edges were taken from a carved war club. The central motif for the fifth panel, representing KIRIBATI, is taken from a fine woven mat. This is bordered on each side by a stylised shark's tooth spear and is separated from the panel above by a design taken from the finely woven sinnet cord featured on the haft of the spear. Between the fifth panel and the sixth panels representing TUVALU, is a turtle border design taken from a Fijian tapa. The Tuvalu star pattern is also taken from a mat design and the border represents the ancient bamboo flute which is still sometimes played in Tonga. The seventh panel represents COOK ISLANDS. In the centre is a motif from a carved ritual adze from Mangaia while the bottom border is taken from a wooden food bowl.

The VANUATU panel beneath features a design from a rare ritual head-dress of the Banks Islands and is bordered by a pattern which is said to represent the marks made by crabs walking across wet sand.

The ninth panel is for NIUE. Its central motif, the bent cross pattern on the sides, and the flying birds which separate this panel from the one above are all taken from a very old tapa returned to Niue from New Zealand. The centre design is common throughout the entire Oceania/Indonesia region. The panel for TOKELAU is taken from a woven mat, and is separated from that for Niue by a stylised crab design. The eleventh panel represents NAURU and shows string figures, which are a traditional art form. The central figure tells a legend of twin babies fighting for milk at their mother's breast, while the side figures depict flying fish. The final panel is for MARSHALL ISLANDS. The top and side borders come from a traditional Marshall Islands mat weave, refering to lineage and land inheritance. The side borders are joor, meaning pillar, and refer to the important positions of chiefs and lineage heads. The central motif is a navigation stick chart, rebbelib or meddo, used by the ancient sailing masters to chart currents and islands.
