GOOD LUCK TO ALL

HSC STUDENTS

From the Principal

Welcome to Term 4, 2020.

Year 10 Yearly Exams

Year 10 completed their end of course examinations this week. We have been very impressed with the students and how they have approached their examinations. We are now marking and completing Yearly marks, ranks and comments that will form part of their Yearly report.

Year 12

Year 12 students begin their Higher School Certificate Examinations next week. We would like to wish our Year 12 students well in their exams. During the course of the exams, we will inform both students and parents details of the graduation and what we are allowed to do, taking into consideration the latest advice from Departments of Health and Education. As restrictions have eased recently, at pres-ent, we can hold a graduation event with at least one parent per student. We are investigating ways we can do so and even increase the attendance to two parents, in a safe way, without breaching any requirements.

Yearly examinations – Year 7, 8 and 9

Over the coming weeks, Years 7, 8 and 9 will complete their Yearly examinations. We wish students well in their preparations and actual exams.

P & C

Our next P & C meeting will take place on Tues-day 20th October at 7pm via Zoom. We welcome and encourage all parents/guardians to attend.

Elijah Ng (7/5/05 - 15/10/19)

This week marks the first anniversary of the sad passing of our much loved student, Elijah. His spirit lives on in our hearts...

“The strength, resilience and courage shown by such an incred-ible young man will forever remain as a part of Elijah’s legacy. We are all so fortunate to have been touched by the light that he shone. “

Sam Jackson Year Co-ordinator

“Thank you Elijah for showing us what’s important in life. Your spirit and cheekiness will be in our hearts for the rest of our life’s journey”

Year 12 Mentoring Program

RHBS has initiated a Mentoring Program to provide additional wellbeing support and guidance to all Year 12 students (beginning with the current Year 11 cohort).

The purpose of the program is to compliment the work that we do with students in the classroom and in their broader school expe-rience by:

increasing student confidence and communication skills

improving engagement with learning and school

enhancing social skills, values and character strengths

supporting students to develop plans for the future

expanding student awareness and knowledge of employment and training opportunities.

The program was officially launched on Thursday 15 October with a COVID-safe breakfast gathering. Students and teachers took this opportunity to discuss the format that they would like their men-tor program to take and to have preliminary discussions about the type of support that the students would be seeking, including stress and time management strategies; goal setting; study tips; balanc-ing school, family, exercise and work; healthy eating; relationships; general “check ins”.

Students and teachers are all very excited to be participating in this personalised wellbeing initiative for our HSC students.

Year 7 Geography incursion

On 22nd September 7K and 7C participated in a whole day incur-sion. The day was spent using a transdisciplinary learning approach to explore the idea “Humans adapt to places and spaces based on their perceptions, to increase their liveability and create a sense of community and connection”.

The lessons and activities leading up to and during the incursion provided the opportunity to extend students’ vision and give them the chance to use their knowledge and understanding from various disciplines, which they usually study separately, to solve everyday problems.

The incursion was the culminating activity for a series of lessons where students explored the key idea in Geography, English and His-tory. To further support their exploration of this transdisciplinary idea and to highlight to students how the liveability of suburbs is addressed in the real world, 7C used the text ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ in English and close study of cities in Ancient China. Furthermore, they conducted an interview with Project Developer, Priscilla Tran, from City West Development, and conducted Environmental Qual-ity Surveys of their local area. This allowed them to collect data and further their knowledge. Students developed interview questions and conducted the interview through Zoom. Ms Tran was able to give the students great insight into liveability from a construction and housing development perspective and was extremely impressed that liveability is being taught in NSW schools.

During the incursion students worked in small groups and devel-oped initiatives to improve the liveability of a local area. It was a great opportunity for students to develop their collaboration and problem solving skills, to think deeply and critically about issues of liveability, and how society goes about addressing these issues.
