WHITE RIBBON DAY

ACTIVITIES

From the Principal

Leadership camp

On Monday 19th November until Wednesday 21st November, our Student Leadership group spent three days on their annual camp. The students spent many hours discussing activities and events that they would like to implement in 2018/19. They also enjoyed bond-ing activities and daunting activities, which took them out of their comfort zones (imagine High Ropes and a Giant swing)! I visited the camp on Wednesday morning and heard their wonderful proposals. I also spoke with the camp Manager and facilitators and they were absolutely glow-ing about our students, our school as well as our staff! Well done to all students for their positive contribu-tions and to Ms Austen and Mr Kassab for giving up their time for our student leaders to develop their skills.

P & C BBQ – Tuesday 20th

I would like to thank our wonderful P & C for hosting a free BBQ for our students last Tues-day. The students, as you can imagine, were very excited about the BBQ and enjoyed the fabulous food that the P & C provided. Everything was eaten and drinks were all sold. Congratulations to all Parents and Carers who both coordinated and assisted in the planning and on the day.

White Ribbon Day activities

It was an honour to participate in the annual White Ribbon Day walk for Randwick to Coogee on Friday 23rd Nov. Our SRC and leadership team joined Ms Austen, Mr Benson, Ms McNeil and myself on the walk and then during the ceremony and pledge at the end of Coogee Beach. Veron Singh, our School Captain, was one of four student hosts and represented our school in an exemplary manner. Randwick Boys’ old boy, David Warner, joined our school to walk with our students and support the cause. Our students were photographed with local politicians: Bruce Nottley Smith and Matt Thisthlewaite and enjoyed the breakfast on offer at the end of the event. It is an extremely important cause and one that we have sup-ported for many years and will continue to support!

During Period two, our Year 7 cohort met with senior students from Randwick Girls’ High School and discussed the issue of men’s violence against women. The senior students led the discussion and gave their perspectives on the damning statistics etc. I would like to thank all students from Randwick Girls’ High School for giving their time and perspectives. Our students took a great deal from the discussions.

Year 10 Work Experience

All Year 10 students will be completing work experience over the next two weeks. This gives Year 10 an opportunity to explore careers that have piqued their interest. I would like to thank Mr Dimopou-los, our Careers Advisor, for coordinating this mammoth event.

Mr Dimopoulos has relayed the fact that this particular cohort has been the best group at organising their work experience and meeting deadlines etc in many years.. Well done, gentlemen!

Year 4 visits

On Tuesday 27th November, Randwick Boys’ will host over 281 Year 4 students from local Primary Schools. This annual event allows the students to experience High School and the programs available at Randwick Boys’ HS, in particular. Ms Olsen has done a fabulous job coordinating the visit and we thank her and all staff for going ‘above and beyond’ and showing the Year 4 students what our High School is all about!

Waratahs training

The New South Wales Waratahs (Rugby) squad has been granted permission to use our wonderful oval to train over the next few weeks. The team is preparing for their upcoming ‘Super Rugby’ competi-tion. It is great for our students to be able to witness the drills and skills that professional rugby players perform at the highest levels. I am sure many of our Rugby players are taking notes and imitating some of the training drills in their own time. Thanks to Mr Noreika for coordinating.

White Ribbon Day at Randwick Girls’ High School

Our sister school began its observance of White Ribbon Day 2018 with a formal assembly in its MPC on Wednesday morning. This year, four of our student representatives, Lotus Rahman, Feng Choe, Justin Loh and Beshal Joarder were invited to take the oath on behalf of Randwick Boys’ High School.

The assembly was addressed by two of the founders of White Rib-bon Australia, Dr Michael Salter and Libby Lloyd. As speakers, both addressed the scale of violence against women in our society, the impact on women’s lives and steps that we all can take to reduce its prevalence. These sobering facts were well heeded by the audience.

In front of the audience, our students were invited to take the fol-lowing pledge, “I will stand up, speak out, and act to prevent men’s violence against women. This is my oath.” The Girls’ School commu-nity expressed its thanks to Beshal, Justin, Feng and Lotus for their willingness to take this step in their own lives as young men. I was very proud to have been a witness to this powerful gesture.

White Ribbon Day will be observed at RBHS on Friday 23, being the closest Friday to International Day for the Elimination of Vio-lence Against Women. Dozens of our students will be marching from Randwick to Coogee in the morning, and other events will be held during the day.

While passing the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools, parents are reminded to look out for the White Ribbon logo on prominent display, and to join us in having conversations on the issue with the young men in our lives.

Match of the Round: Oztag (opens) 1s V Epping

Due to several key players missing due to sick-ness, injury and leadership camp, the undefeated group had everything stacked against them. A call-up from the junior teams was required. A superstar in Year 7, Yasin Kuscu, answered the call. With no substitutes, our boys ‘dug their boots’ into

the field and prevailed in a close encounter. Coming away victorious against a full strength Epping outfit is a tremendous feat. Well done to coach Mr Jackson and his troops.

Award-Winning In-School Theatre Performances

Verbal Combat

On 07 December, Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing program ‘Verbal Combat’ for Year 7 students.

Words are powerful. Words can hurt and cyber bullying is devastating. Verbal Combat is a live theatre program that fol-lows three friends who learn that their online words can last forever. The desire to fit in and be liked is strong and when one friend starts to post witty, but mean rumours to get more online likes, the play takes a cruel twist. All too soon, the posts are wreaking havoc in all their lives and the characters quickly discover that there is no easy way out. Verbal Combat is essential learning, that addresses the dire consequences of cyber bullying and will help students understand that their digital footprints are hard to erase and so are their mistakes.

Verbal Combat is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and the program has been developed in consultation with teachers, psychologists, as well as real-life student experiences. The methodology of the program is safe, supportive and nonjudgmental and designed to provide students with positive and useful tools that they can use in their everyday lives.

More than 350,000 Australian students have already benefited from Brainstorm Productions multi award-winning educational theatre programs over the past twelve months. Their programs cater to the specific wellbeing needs of students, helping to create a healthy and harmonious school environment. If you would like to know more about Brain-storm Productions, visit their website at www.brainstormproductions.edu.au

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Randwick Boys’ High School prides itself in giving students the opportunity to learn about themselves and their worlds. On Friday the 7th of December, all Year 7 students will attend a performance by Brainstorm Theatre Company called Verbal Combat.

In Verbal Combat Cyber safety and cyber bullying in schools is addressed through a cutting edge educational theatre performance.

When cyber bullying is anonymous and undercover:

WHO’S responsible?

WHAT drives cyber bullies to send that nasty message, post that hurtful comment or embarrassing photo on Facebook or Snapchat?

WHY are some people more likely to be a target and why is it hard for victims to be assertive or resilient?

WHERE can they go if or when they are being cyber bullied?

HOW can we stop cyber bullying from happening?

A cleverly crafted narrative allows students to examine these questions AND their own behaviour.

The cost of the performance is $6.00 per student Please sign and return the form below with your $6.00 payment to the front office no later than Friday, 30th November.
