POST GAME QUOTESSTEELERS vs. ST. LOUIS RAMS - NOVEMBER 3, 1996 -THREE RIVERS STADIUM

STEELERS QUOTES

HEAD COACH BILL COWHER:

"There's not a whole lot to say. I think the one thing we talked about was putting together a completegame which we haven't done to this point. That was as complete a game as I've been around sinceI've been here. I think all three phases speak for themselves in the performance that they had today. Our players came out and played with a purpose and I'm very proud of them. The coaching staff did agreat job too.

Talk about the nmnin2 game: It was pretty good today. Jerome (Bettis), and Erric (Pegram) had thebig return on the kickoff, then Jon Witman comes in. Our runners ran hard. Our offensive line did agreat job. It was just good to see the first drive going down there and finishing the thing off. I thinkthat kind of established the precedent for the day. I was very pleased.

Re: the first three successful drives: "It was good. We talked about eliminating the negative plays. That was really the only thing that stopped us against Atlanta. Coming in and doing the things of notbeating ourselves, trying to eliminate the negative plays and just executing. We were able to do that.We had some good play calling, some very good execution. Really all three phases did an excellentjob today. We came up with some big plays when we needed to and kind of fed off each other. You'd be searching to find some negatives in today's game.

What did you say when to Erric Pegram when he limued off the field? Ijust wanted to make sure itwasn't his knee, the way Jerome (Bettis) was carrying him. Maybe it was just the way Jerome wascarrying him. I couldn't tell what it was.

Re: Mike Totnczak: "Mike's fine. He really actually got better as the second half unfolded. Heprobably could have come back in and played if he had to.

Howmuch value istherein gettinsevervbody achancetoplav? "I thinktherearealotofplussestothat, to getting guys to situations where they can go out on the field. When it can be that type oftempo in game situations, it's very unique to get that opportunity. I think somewhere down the line itwill pay dividends.

IsitespeciallywedforiimMiller? "Ithinkit'sgoodforJimmytogetachancetogointhereandgeta chance to play.

Did it mean anything special to you since it was your 50th win? "I was made aware of it during theweek. They started talking about the people whose names were associated with that. The commondenominator was championships and if I'm going to be put into that mold, I guess there's somethingelse I've got to do, that we have to do. I'm very flattered, to be honest with you.

Are you into NFL history? "No Ijust don't want to be part of history. I'd rather just be the makingsof it. It's a special group of guys we've got, but we've still got a long way to go.

Jerome Bettis had a chance to get to 1.000 yard on the season today. Were you await of that? "Iwasn't aware of it until Jerome let me know midway through the third quarter. He wanted to do it infront of the people here. That's the kind of person he is. As I told him, we still have a long way togo. The toughest battle I had was trying to keep him off the field the whole second half. 1 can't sayenough about Jerome. He's an important part of this football team and exemplifies this city, the waythis guy runs. His reason for wanting to get to 1,000 in front of this city was legitimate.

It was a great team win. Special teams, defense, offense. It was special."

OB JIM MILLER: Did you feel like you could run easily on them today? "I think (Jerome Bettis)was a little excited today so it made it pretty easy. In the preseason we rushed the ball pretty wellagainst them. So wetried to come back with some things to complement what we did in thepreseason. Basically all we studied all week was the preseason Yeah, we felt confident that wecould rush the ball against them."

DE BRENTSON BUCKNEIt "We did some things well. It was the closest thing to havingalmost a perfect game. But we still made a couple of mistakes. We gave up some long drives and wedidn't get off (the ball) on third down like we are capable of doing. But we made steps towardplaying a complete four quarter game today.

Was it as easy as it looked? "It was just a matter of everybody lining up, doing what they're capableof doing, and playing within the scheme of the defense. When you have 11 guys doing that, thingsseem to come open. It may look easy, but what it is is all II guys doing what they're capable ofdoing."

WR YANCEY Re: returning to lineup: "I didn't get a lot of snaps and didn't makeany plays, but it felt really good to be back out there healthy. I was excited to be out there."

OT JOHN JACKSON: Re: JeromeBettis: "lthinkhehadalottoprovetoalotofpeople1especially to the Rams organization. As far as him proving that he can still play in this league, I thinkhe's proven that the last few weeks and I think he's going to continue to prove it.

Did you feel like you could run the ball especially well today? "We always go in with a game plan thatwe can run. But if they bring a lot of people up, we can throw the ball. We pretty much dictate fromwhat they are doing.

Was it nice to get a big win as onposed to the recent soueakers? "You've got to have those close onesto bring closeness to your team."

OT JUSTIN STRZELCZYK: "We knew Jerome (Bettis) wanted to run hard today. He runshard all the time. But today, he really was going. We blocked extremely well. Our scheme and gameplan was excellent."

FS BARREN PERRY: That's a great way to start the second half of the isnt'it? "Yeah. We just wanted to get this one behind us. It was very emotional for Jerome and our whole offensejust totally took charge.

It's nice to watch the offense grind out that yardage. "Absolutely. And today, the way (Bale) Pegramgo it going was great. We were so happy for him to get that kickoff return and his touchdown run. He's been hanging in there and that was great to see."

OB/WR KORDELL STEWART: Explain your two TD runs: "The first one was a called playand Ijust read the blocks and the line did a great job. The two yard run was an audible and! sawsomething in the defense which gave me the hole.

Were you surnrised Jim Miller was nit in at quarterback when Mike Tomczak got hurt? "No. That'sour game plan and right now I'm comfortable with that whole scenario. I wish guys would stopasking me about it,"

CR ROD W000SON1 Did you realize Erric Pnram bested your kickoff return from 198?"Really? That's great. I wasn't aware of that. He's been wanting to make something happen.and getback in there. What a great pair of guys to have -- Pegram and Jerome (Bettis). It's a big lift to thedefense to have those guys running like that, eating up the clock.

Talk about the defense's ntay today? "It was good. We had a good game plan. But the story today isthe offense. Let's leave it at that."

RB ERRIC PEGRAM: You scored twice. Jerome (Bettisi scored twice and Kordellscored twice. Is that a message to the league? "We can hit you from many ways. If you try to shutme down or Jerome, then "Slash" will get you. If you try to shut down Slash, Jerome will get you.Every now and again I'll sneak up on you and that's how we want it.

What was the best line that somebody gave you after the kickoff return for 'it)? "That I needed to geton the treadmill. That! needed to get on the bike. But since I've been hurt, I haven't been able towork out die way I've wanted to. loach Cowher came over and said 'you need to get on thetreadmill; you need to get on the bike.' I said 'yeah, you're right. Now where's that oxygen?'

Was it easy today? "I think we just played our game. I don't think it was what they were doing orwhat they weren't doing. I think we just went our and played a whole game.. I think that was reallythe first game we played a whole game."

POST GAME QUOTES

STEELERS VS RAMS - NOVEMBER 3,19% - THREE RIVERS STADIUM

STEELERS QUOTES

RB JEROME BEF uS:

(Comments on playing hard in the first quarter): I wanted to come out and make my presenceknown, let them know it was going to be a rough game all the way through.

(Comments about second touchdown): I wanted to let them know I was a game breaker. Therewas some comments about me not being a game breaker, and I just wanted to show them that,'hey,! am a game breaker, and! can make things happen'. A lot of people didn't think I had thespeed, so I wanted to show them a little bit.

OB MIKE TOMCZAK:

(Comments on game): Our offensive line allowed Jerome Bettis to go out and do his thing. Hewent out and had his "glory" thy. He went out there and did a tremendous job running thefootball. Throwing the football we had several attempts while I was in there, but I got my bellrung. Things are pretty functional and pretty sound.

(That was your first incompletion. You seemed pretty comfortable in the pocket): We tried topick up where we did last week against Atlanta in the second half. That's the kind of football wewant to play around here. We want to score every time we get the football. We stayed prettymuch to our goal getting 21 points pretty quick and capitalizing on the turnovers. It allows us totake the next step in the next half of the season.

(Comments on Jerome Bettis): It starts up front with the offensive line. Jerome was very hypefor this game. The bottom line is execution. We did a very sound job executing all the wayacross the board.

POST GAME QUOTES

STEELERS VS RAMS - NOVEMBER 3, 1996 - THREE RIVERS STADIUM

RAMS QUOTES

HEAD COACH RICH BROOKS:

It is extremely disappointing that we were unable to contain Pittsburgh's running game, and itdidn't make any difference who was carrying the ball. The holes were huge. Their offensive linedid a great job. Their blocking scheme knocked us off the ball. They had cutback lanes. Theyhad point of attack lanes, and the running game was too much for us to handle today. We (Rams)did not run the ball well enough to keep the pressure off of Tony (Banks). Both sides of the ball, the running game was our Achilles heel, Under the circumstances, Tony did some very goodthings today. The interception coming out of the end zone, there was a miscommunication on theplay, and we didn't get the right route run. He (Tony) made an error after we did get a breakafter recovering a Pittsburgh fumble, but we gave it right back to them and let them stick it in ourend zone. I really felt the second half when we closed it to 21-6 that we had a chance. Weseemed to be stepping up our play on defense, The kickoff return (91-yard kickoff return byPegram) then the insuing fumble on our (Rams) kickoff return turned a semi-competitive gameinto a rout,

(Comments on their defense): I'm extremely disappointed in our defense. We're a defense in an8-man front that is geared to stop the run, and we didn't come close to stopping it. We didn'tstep up today, and Pittsburgh just blocked us. I don't think we showed up on the defensive sideof the running game. I don't think we played with the intensity that we needed to match upagainst an outstanding running football team.

(Comments on Jerome Bettis): Jerome did a good job. Obviously the 50-yard touchdown runwhere he was virtually almost untouched. We didn't get the safety down in the box. He camelate. They both seem to run past each other like two trains passing in the night. I saw huge holesmost of the day. Their running game got going early and kept it going.

(Comments on Pittsburgh's defense): They (Pittsburgh) bring their nickel and dime packages in,and they were bringing four to a side, and we had trouble picking it up. That's.what they used onour fourth down play in the first quarter. They brought four off our left side in which Tony tooka pretty big sack. It was a lot of yards as well lost. It was followed immediately by Jerome's 50-yard run.

DELESLIEO'NEAL:

(Comments on his performance): I missed four or five tackles on the first drive myself. Wedidn't tackle well. We overran some plays. We just didn't make it happen.

(Comments on Jerome Bettis): We gave him opportunities to make plays. That's part of it. A lotof the times you look at the film, you have guys hitting him in the backfield. We have guys hittinghim on the line, and we just didn't make the tackles. The offensive line does a good job gettingtheir hands on you enough where you can't get off clean to get a good shot on him, and he madesome plays.

(Comments on this loss): They're all tough. Just the way that we've been losing games not evenmaking this game close at all. Having opportunities and just squandering those opportunities, wewent out right off the bat and ended up giving up a big drive. They scored and that kind of set thetone for them. We felt like if we could stop their run, we might have a good chance to put themin a situation to pass. But we never put them in a situation where they had to pass the ball.

S KEITH LYLE:

(Comments on the Rams intensity): We had a good week of practice. I thought we werementally ready, physically ready. Everybody was healthy for the most part. They just came downhere and drove the ball down our throats. I don't know what to say about it. I'm disgusted byour performance.

(over)Rew luG

Page 19: RAMS DEFENSE RAMS OFFENSE - National Football …prod.static.steelers.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/Media... · 57 Eric Ravatti, LB ... 96 Breutson Buckner 90 Bill Johnson

(Comments about Bettis sending a message to the Rams): I didn't pay attention to any of thatstuff. They tried to make a big deal out of it. He did get his point across. That's for sure. Ididn't get caught up in all that nonsense though. He played good. It got to the point where theycould have run Miller through there. I don't what you say in situations like that. We just got ourbutts whooped. They controlled their destiny today. They determined what they wanted to doout there on offense.

DT D'MARCO FARR:

(Comments on team's effort): We all put forth some effort. We put forth great effort. They justbeat us. They beat us to the punch in just about every phase of the game. They beat us especiallyon defense. This team is not dead, but we lost the first game of the second season. It's going tobe tough to get back into it, but Monday comes tomorrow. We have to regroup and keep

OB TONY BANKS:

(Comments on Steelers defense): They bring the house. Their defense isn't overrated. Theyhave a nice defense over there and they get the job done. They put a lot of pressure on theoffense,

(Comments on their performance in the red zone): When we get down that close, you've got tobe able to run the ball. You can't just drop back and throw the football. Our running game reallywasn't opening up in the red zone today. We weren't able to take advantage of the limes that wewere down there.

(Comments on this being the toughest loss of the season): It seems like it's getting tougher andtougher every week, so I'd have to say yes. The way we lost isn't cool, but I don't know, if feltlike even late in the third quarter, we were still in the game. In the forth quarter, we didn't getanything done.
