Page 3: Ramboll Middle East's Master Planning and Landscape Architecture

We are engineers, scientists and consultants who believe in the power of design to create a better future.

Our design philosophy is to always make room for the human experience. Ultimately, we measure our success by how well people and communities are served by what we have done.

At its best, good design can regenerate communities, protect natural environments, and connect people across vast distances; it can provide new energy solutions and create buildings that people are happy to be in. Good design is also robust and long-lasting.

We share this design approach with the world’s leading architects and developers – with whom we regularly collaborate, often as a preferred partner.

LIVEABLE CITIES - THEORY TO PRACTICE DIAGRAM

LIVEABLE CITIES STRATEGY

Municipalities and stakeholders are looking for new, smart approaches to respond to these challenges and create foundations for a strong, promising future. Using a liveable cities design approach layers the limited physical space of a city with additional processes and functions, increasing its value, durability and relevance to inhabitants.

Increasingly, we live in cities. Cities are facing big challenges, whether from cloudburst flooding, rising sea levels, gridlocked roads or how to create attractive setting which draw and retain citizens and investments.

Our multidisciplinary and cultural approach provides strong new direction on the cusp of an uncertain, yet promising, future. The use of ecological infrastructure systems that mimic nature creates city spaces that are human scale and can be accessed and appreciated by citizens. This human connection brings about a subtle change in behaviour and thinking, which makes citizen responsibility natural and sociable. Our job is to work with local people to transform this big vision into a daily reality - a liveable city starting today for a future tomorrow.

HOW WE WORK

To make liveable and sustainable communities where people want to live, work and play takes careful planning and design. It is important to ensure peoples voices are heard and community vitality is maintained both economically and environmentally. Urban planning and design takes a multidisciplinary approach and extensive stakeholder engagement, where all aspects of liveability and functionality are considered enabling places to prosper into the future.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

HOW WE WORK

BLUE/GREEN APPROACH - INNOVATION IN WATERWhether visible or invisible, water plays an essential role in the viability of city regions and urban living structures. In the light of the global challenges we face today and in the future, this role is of critical importance to humanity.

Media coverage of climate change is often very negative and full of fear and disaster, and most people are initially wary of change. Climate change is the challenge of our time, and offers an exciting opportunity to redefine quality of life in our cities. On the cutting edge of innovation and sustainability, we offer expertise and professionalism, so that from the maelstrom of creativity a balanced and choreographed reality will evolve.

Within this reality, water is of critical importance. Now as never before, an integrated approach to city design has become a necessity to reconcile the challenges of resource management, environmental protection, and human quality of life. Tried and trusted conventional infrastructure systems are no longer safe and cost-effective solutions.

PARKS AND OPEN SPACE

The modern green space of cities reveals that not only are parks valuable for their aesthetic, environmental and social interaction quality but also contribute to improving the economic conditions. A backbone of our studio’s culture is the creation of green and liveable people-laces, a respite from the daily urban grind.

HOW WE WORK

RESIDENTIAL

Where we live is of vital importance. How we continue to live is a theme we encounter everyday. Sustainable development for people is not only about the creation of ‘homes‘ but primarily about the creation of place. Places for all people to live, work, socialise, play, enjoy, integrate, and thrive within the greater community.

STEERING GROUP

Local people are experts of their townships. They understand how their community functions, as well as the rich culture and history of the area. Engaging people in their built and natural surroundings is key in achieving liveable places for the people themselves. It goes beyond seeking public buy-in, but ensures a holistic and informed approach to planning and design, tailor-made to the unique needs of the community.

FUJAIRAH 2040 - FRAMEWORK PLAN

Fujairah is a gateway to the Indian Ocean and a place of significant geopolitical importance for the region. Coupled with far reaching strategic opportunity and a range of internal development and growth pressures, the Emirate is pro-actively seeking to develop and implement a strategic direction that considers the Emirate’s potential economic, environmental and development needs beyond 2040.

Ramboll has been commissioned by the Government of Fujairah to develop an Emirate wide Framework Plan for Fujairah - one of seven Emirates making up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Framework Plan for the Emirate - ‘Fujairah 2040’ will present the strategic direction for an integrated sustainable growth encompassing the realms of economic, social, urban, rural, infrastructure, environment, cultural heritage and sustainability in the local and regional context. Ultimately, Fujairah 2040 will enable the Government of Fujairah to successfully deliver and implements a vision for the future.

OUR SIGNATURE PROJECTS

As part of the Fujairah 2040 Framework Plan, four settlements were selected for a Local Area Plans (LAP) including Tawian and Qidfa/Murbah under the Fujairah Municipality and Dhadna and Al Bidiya under Dibba Municipality.

These LAPs were established in order to structure, guide and recommend future development and growth patterns.

Extensive community workshops took place within each local area to guide the LAPs, to gain insight and consult local residents on what and how they would like to see their communities developed and enhanced. This is a first for the UAE and a great success in ensuring future proposals and recommendations keep local residents at the forefront of local plans.

The archaeological and cultural heritage sites, along with the geological archaeological sites, were identified and documented as protected areas at the Emirate level. The importance of the archaeological and cultural heritage sites stem from the fact that Fujairah is well known for its ancient sites, which not only attract more visitors and tourists to the region, but they also provide valuable means of giving local residents a connection to their roots. The geological archaeological sites have been selected on the basis that they show the beauty of the geological mountainous features in Fujairah.

By clearly identifying the potentially valuable areas of archaeology and cultural heritage it has been possible to establish the first "Natural and Cultural Heritage Map" of Fujairah. This map translated the efforts that have been done in terms of identifying the archaeological and heritage sites into GIS layers which is considered to be a valuable basis when carrying out the Fujairah 2040 Framework Plan. More than thirty six sites were documented across Fujairah and the map will assist the planners and decision makers involved in future planning activities within the Emirate. The restoration of existing sites and the proactive searching for new sites are two of the recommended future projects for Fujairah.

OUR SIGNATURE PROJECTS

Ramboll was appointed alongside Barton Wilmore and Omrania Architects, as one of 12 international teams, to produce a vision master plan and feasibility assessment for the proposed master plan development. Ramboll’s appointment included a full multidisciplinary engineering review and design proposals including infrastructure, services, water engineering and transport planning services.

We worked closely with Barton Wilmore, Middle East and Omrania, KSA to produce an integrated architectural and engineered master plan that met the client’s highly sustainable demands including ensuring all energy and water demands were met in the most sustainable manner possible in this challenging climate.

KA-CARE will spearhead research and industry in the fields of atomic and renewable energy to provide a positive and effective response to the challenge of climate change and the depletion of natural carbon based resources. KA-CARE will also provide residential accommodation for upwards of 60,000 to 100,000 people in a desert setting close to Riyadh.

The master plan reflects this vision and offers a sustainable environment for industry, research, leisure and residential accommodation.

Environmental assessment and social master plan studies covering 15 disciplines and services across the City of Jeddah.

The Jeddah Environmental Impact Assessment (JEA) and the Jeddah Environmental Social Master plan (JESMP) are part of the Jeddah Government’s plan to oversee a comprehensive series of engineering, environmental and social activities that include studies to resolve current and future environmental problems. The studies will identify environmental issues and their impact in connection with Jeddah on a regional scale.

Ramboll has been awarded the role of Environmental Consultant for the complete JEA and JESMP projects and we will report directly into the Jeddah Storm Water Drainage Program team (JSDP) and the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME). This is the largest environmental project ever won in the Middle East region and will require a team of 40 Ramboll ME, Ramboll UK and Ramboll Denmark staff to support it.

The studys scope will cover the required environmental and social studies in Jeddah over an area of approximately 4,600 km2.

LULU TOWER - ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The coastal pattern of the Abu Dhabi area is composed of a network of islands, some of which contribute to the suburban sprawl of the city’s urban planning. Lulu Island was completed in 1992 as a land reclamation project for the city . It is one of the most distinctive ecological contexts in the world – it has been described as ‘an edge, an interface between land and sea’ and in order to protect this delicate ecosystem, the Foster and Partners / Atelier Dreiseitl sited the group of towers off the shore of Lulu Island in the sea, leaving the island untouched.

The design team created a super-dense master plan to limit the impact on the environment and develop a compact vertical city. All shops, leisure facilities within an integrated site were to maximize the benefits of mixed-use: encouraging social activity and balancing energy consumption between its mix of day-time and night-time uses. The master plan of Lulu Tower responds formally to the network of the city, creating a geometrically harmonious plan facing the city while the original site for the tower on Lulu Island is left virgin and organic with soft shapes and edges that merge land and sea. ZAYED NATIONAL MUSEUM - ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The Zayed National Museum is a unique project with an innovative, culturally sensitive landscape theme. In his lifetime, Sheik Zayed cared deeply about the environment of the Emirates. This national legacy is the inspiration behind the sustainable landscapes designed on and around the new Zayed National Museum building. The spacious galleries of the Museum create a raised mound from which 5 towers protrude like the wings of the desert falcons. A naturalistic landscape garden wraps around the museum building.

This challenging environment is essentially a steep, green roof where bio-engineering and water-wise irrigation are essential in the tough, xero-tropical climate and where the interface with the museum logistics and security requirements are complex.

The native natural habitats of the Emirates - sabkah, desert plains, wadi and mountain - are evoked in microcosm within the landscape design which progresses from the sea to the museum. Indigenous plants are used to form a new, native garden culture which combines the subtle beauty of tough, climate adapted desert plants and their cultural uses. Exquisite and cooling oasis pockets are refreshing rest spots. The landscapes can described as the Museum’s sixth gallery, where the country‘s natural treasures can be experienced and treasured.

OUR SIGNATURE PROJECTS

The Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve is a nature reserve located in the northwest of Singapore. In 2002, it was the first wetlands reserve to be designated in Singapore and its global importance as a stop-over point for migratory birds was recognized by its international’s inclusion in the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network. In 2003, it was also listed as an ASEAN Heritage Park.

The master plan aims to anchor Sungei Buloh‘s position in international nature conservation while still meeting the local recreational needs of Singaporeans. The master plan defines a spatial strategy which protects an inner core. A sustainably designed activities loop with interactive and educational stations lets local people experience this outstanding natural environment while still conserving the site’s sensitive, natural characteristics. The master plan also looks beyond the site itself, identifying future possibilities for a linked nature network beyond the Sungei Buloh area.

The Sungei Buloh Wetland Park helps make Singapore a great place to live and is an attractive global destination showcasing the reserve’s rich biodiversity.

TANNER SPRINGS PARK - PORTLAND, OREGON, USA

Formerly a wetland, the Pearl District was bisected by Tanner Creek and sided by the broad Willamette River. Rail yards and industry first claimed and drained the land. Over the past 30 years, a new neighborhood has progressively established itself – young, mixed, urban and dynamic, today the Pearl District is home to families and businesses.

With surgical artistry, the urban skin of one downtown block, 60 x 60 meters (200 by 200 feet) is peeled back to create a new city park. Stormwater runoff from the park block is fed into a natural water feature with a spring and natural cleansing system. The `Art Wall´ recycles historic rail tracks, oscillating in and out and inlaid with fused glass pieces handpainted with nature images by Herbert Dreiseitl. Ospreys dive into the water, art performances unfold on the floating deck, children splash and explore, and others take quiet contemplation in this natural refuge in the heart of the city. An intense community participation and a stakeholder steering group means that this park is the realisation of the dreams and hopes of local people.

BISHAN - ANG MO KIO PARK - SINGAPORE

Bishan Park is one of Singapore’s most popular parks in the heartlands of Singapore. The project represents the pilot implementation of a new vision for blue-green city infrastructure which addresses the diversity of needs of water supply and flood protection while creating spaces for people and nature in the city. This project is part of the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme, a long-term Singapore initiative to transform the country’s water bodies beyond their functions of drainage and water supply, into vibrant, new spaces for community, culture and recreation.

A 2.7 km long straight concrete drainage channel has been restored into a sinuous, natural river 3.2 km long, that meanders through the park. Sixty-two hectares have been redesigned to accommodate the inherent dynamic processes of an urban water catchment and river system.

TINAJIN CULTURAL PARK - TIANJIN, CHINA

Tianjin is one of China’s top 5 cities, not just in size and population but also in terms of business investment. Located just half an hour south-east of Beijing by high-speed train, Tianjin is also close to the sea. The high-water table needs to be maintained to prevent seawater encroaching inland and the dry, harsh climate does not preclude flooding.

In the design of the new cultural district between the new opera house and existing city hall, a main goal was to increase outdoor comfort and create dynamic, social pedestrian routes. The lake waterfront is aesthetic with dramatic views to the opera house and exciting Museum, gallery and library frontage. Avenues of trees and planting shield the waterfront from the cold Mongolian winds while at the same time storing water for irrigation.

The lake is a storm-water feature, a balancing pond which can effortlessly handle a 1 in 10 year storm event and buffer a 1 in 100 storm event. Generous tree plantings link subsurface, decentralised retention trenches which feed the lake via a cleansing biotope. The urban lake has its own natural biology and reduces temperature extremes. Its scenic beauty sets the scene for Tianjin’s most outstanding new cultural architecture.
