OUR CAPABILITIES WITHINGAS COMPRESSORSFULL PACKAGE EXPERTISE AND COMPETENCES WITHINALL TYPES OF GAS COMPRESSORS

Gas compressors are advanced andstate-of-the-art machines. They areoften very powerful machinesdemanding shaft powers of manyMegawatts. Ramboll has theexpertise and experience to adviseabout the most optimal type to beselected in a given application. Thismay be the basis for the furtherspecification of the compressor.

Compressor types and drivers

For natural gas compression invarious compression servicesonshore or offshore, the following isan overview of the normally usedtypes: • Reciprocating: API 11p/ISO 13631,

API 618/ISO 13707• Rotary screw: API 619/ISO 14440• Centrifugal: API 617/ISO 10439  The most common drivers for gascompressors are either electricmotors (fixed speed or VFD) or gasturbines. Diesel or gas engines arealso selected from time to time.

Specifying the equipment

Specifying these advancedmachines require specialist rotatingequipment engineers with expertisein the relevant API/ISO standards, materials expertise and intensiveknowledge about theinstrumentation and shaft sealingsystems. The specification of the correcttype of machine for the purpose isessential for the process and theplant's availability. The specificationof the machine auxillaries are alsovery important parameters.

Package engineering

Many of our clients prefer that theengineer responsible for thespecification follows the packagefrom tendering through technicalbid evaluation, purchase, vendordocumentation control up to finaltests. A number of our engineersare very experienced in this

concept. More variations andoptions of the package engineeringconcept is possible and may beagreed on a case-by-case basis.

Important issues

There are a number of issues toconsider when selecting andspecifying compressors. Theseinclude: • Design conditions and basis• Process design and simulations• Noise and vibration acceptance

levels• Electric power availability• Operation/maintenance

philosophy• Availability/reliability goals• Client's existing machine pool• Cost and delivery time• Design life span and LCC

Our services

• Consultancy on early stage of theproject regarding selection ofconcept of machinery and driver

• Preparation of mechanical datasheets for machine, sealingsystem, auxillaries as well as thedriver

• Preparation of test anddocumentation requirements

• Preparation of completerequisition document for thetender package

• Package engineering and follow-up throughout the contractingphase, the manufacturing andassembly, FAT and installation atclient's site.

RELATED TOPICS AND SERVICES

Gas turbines

Ramboll has further extensiveexperience within gas turbines andsimilar services are provided forthese. Often compressor packagesoffshore are gas turbine driven.Within the field of gas turbines thefollowing is also covered byRamboll's experience:

• Turbo generators• Turbine driven water injection

pumps• Modifications

Zero flare systems

Flare gas recovery systems arebecoming more and moreimplemented on new and existingoil and gas installations in Europe.Gas from the flare system iscollected in a vessel andrecompressed back in the process.Only in the case of a major processupset, gas flows to the flare towerand is ignited.

Trouble-shooting and maintenance

Our newly acquired companyRamboll QA Consulting offersservices within commissioning,trouble-shooting and maintenanceof compressors and gas turbines. These services includes kit solutions

where complete kits including allnecessary parts and consumablesfor major overhauls and for anyforeseen breakdown are organisedin complete boxed kits -ready forshipment to the installation in needof the items.

Our references

Ramboll has a number of referencesfor design and specification ofrelated equipment, including flaregas re-compressors. The re-compressor is often either a Rootsblower or a screw compressor. API617 internally geared centrifugalcompressors may also be used inthis application. Our references inthis field include the following:• NEXUS I FPSO (Client: NEXUS/

APL, Norway)• South Arne platform (Client: Hess

Denmark)• Harald A platform (Client: Maersk

Oil, Denmark)
