Production We have been manufacturing containers and technical components from polyethylene for rainwater usage, the agricultural sector and municipal enterprises by means of rotation process for decades. We use stainless steel to make tanks and containers for the production and storage of wine and beverages – all at our Ofterdingen location - made in Germany.
Container Construction The construction of containers for water, wastewater, the industrial sector, beverages etc. has become second nature to us, and the experience gained from this enables us to know precisely what really matters when it comes to customer-orientated solutions for rainwater systems.
Tradition and Progress We are a medium-sized family enterprise with around 90 employees. Our business started with the production of wooden vats and progressed to working with new materials and new production processes. We offer innovative products for traditional areas – from a third generation. For this reason we feel an equal sense of loyalty to this tradition and to technical progress for the future as well.
SustainabilityOur products are designed for long-term use. Not least because our solution to rainwater usage serves to preserve our valuable drinking water.

This revolutionary solution offers reliable ground water protection for all water levels. All underground storage tanks from Genvand can be used in ground water with this newly developed product. The automatic water level control in the tank ensures that no pressure is exercised on the container from the outside in ground water conditions, which means that the tank can be used at any ground water level.Compared to conventional systems, which require great expenditure for concrete foundation plates or flat, thick-walled tanks, the ground water module* can be easily and quickly installed in all Speidel underground storage tanks (installation instructions can be found at www.genvand.dk)
The rainwater is conveyed into the cartridge.
The filter cartridge purifies the rainwater. The purified water is conveyed into the rainwater storage tank via the gentle infeed.
The oblique position and the smooth surface structure of the sieve ensure that the filtered dirt is conveyed into the sewer system.

If the water level rises in the rainwater storage tank, the rainwater flows into the sewer system or seeps away via the intake or skimmer opening. Any pollen that may be on the water surface is literally sucked into the skimmer opening.
The excess water together with the pollen is conveyed out of the rainwater storage container. Outlet DN 100.
Odour lock by means of syphon effect.

Rodent barrier by means of narrow intake.
By activating the backwash device, the spout sprays water at the sieve cartridge from below at a particular angle.
The water jet penetrates the sieve mesh and removes any contamination.
The water jet drives the filter cartridge and triggers a rotating motion. This enables the entire sieve mesh of the filter cartridge to be cleaned.
The dirty water is flushed back into the sewer system.

The feed system ensures an automatic supply of rainwater from the underground storage tank to
the sanitary water network, as well as an automatic drinking water feed into this network as
required should the tank be empty, taking into account DIN 1988, Part 4 on the protection of
drinking water.

The KTW test report and the test according to W270 are available for
the containers produced from food-safe PE plastic. This means that the
containers are suitable for storing drinking water.Easy upgrading using
the drinking water set enable Speidel underground water storage tanks
to be used as drinking water storage tanks.
Please clarify official provisions prior to installation!
The polyethylene (LLDPE) used for manufacturing the underground
storage tanks is resistant to almost all chemicals as well as to elements
from domestic wastewater and its reaction and decomposition product
components.
This makes the containers particularly suited for use as drainless
collection pits.
Easy retrofitting by means of an air vent enables Speidel underground
storage tanks from 2,000 litres to 10,000 litres to be used as drainless
collection pits.
When abandoning use as a collection pit, e.g. through sewer system
connection, the tank can be used as a rainwater storage tank without any
problems, provided it has been professionally cleaned.

More and more frequently municipalities are requiring the use of a rainwater retention tank on private properties to be included in the development plan. The aim of these containers is to release the rainwater into the public wastewater network in a curbed manner. The Speidel retention tanks enable provision of the stipulated retention volume as well as simultaneous availability of a service water volume that can be used for the house and garden. The proportion of service volume and retention volume can be varied according to the table below. In addition, an option is provided for using the tank purely as a retention tank with the mere function of curbed outflow.

Infiltration
More and more municipalities have introduced a split wastewater fee. This means that all metered households
are rated according to the paved (compacted) area. To avoid billing in terms of the paved area, an option is
provided to provide seepage for rainwater draining from paved areas. This has the benefit of saving costs through
seepage. As the costs are frequently 2 € per year/per m2 paved area, investment in a seepage system pays itself
off relatively quickly.
The recommended values apply to regions in
Germany with an average precipitation volume of
700 - 800 l/sqm/year, for example. Should you
decide for a low storage volume, this would result in
frequent overflow of the seepage system with
diversion to the neighbouring property or into the
public sewer system. Precise dimensioning

What is the position regarding hygiene of rainwater for toilets and washing machines?
Research has showed that the mean germ count found in rainwater is significantly less than the reference values for
swimming water or foodstuffs (e.g. salad). When using rainwater for toilet flushing, germs do not play any role as their
count in relation to the main germ carrier in human faeces is negligible. The same applies to laundry. A comparison of
the germ count of soiled, unwashed laundry with the germ count of rainwater produces the same ratio.
Concrete cisterns or plastic tank. Which is better?
By comparison to concrete cisterns, plastic tanks can generally be transported without heavy moving equipment, due
to their lower weight, thereby avoiding large-scale damage to the construction pit and in the garden. This is of
particular significance if you are installing a rainwater usage system in your garden at a later stage. An additional
advantage of a plastic tank is that it easier to clean, as concrete tanks have rough interior walls on which dirt
accumulates more easily. A risk also exists that the rainwater can become contaminated by erosion of cement particles,
which can at worst cause pump damage. In addition, limescale precipitated from the concrete cistern can "harden" the
rainwater, which is actually low in limescale, thereby reducing the lifespan of your washing machine.
How often must the tank be cleaned?
Depending on the rainwater pre-cleaning process (filter), the tank must be cleaned at the earliest every 8 - 10 years.
Non-filtered fine suspension particles enter the tank, sink to the bottom and form a sedimentation layer, which even
has a positive effect on the water quality (see next question). This means that cleaning should only be undertaken
after a thicker sediment layer has formed.
What is sedimentation and how does it work?
Sedimentation cleans the accumulated water, and is therefore as important as pre-filtration. Non-filtered fine
suspension particles enter the tank and sink to the bottom as a result of their own weight. Dissolved substances adhere
to the sinking suspension substance (adsorption), which are similarly removed from the water and deposited in the
sediment. This results in clear water of a high quality above the sediment. You should however ensure that the
sediment layer is not agitated, namely by means of gentle infeed.
How much can I save and how economically feasible is this?
You can save up to 50% of your daily drinking water requirements using a rainwater usage system. This could be up to
70 litres per person per day (including use for toilets, washing machine, garden irrigation and car washing). If you take
into account the increasingly difficult and costly preparation of drinking water, the forecasted doubling in the price of
drinking water in the coming years is completely logical. This makes a rainwater usage system feasible on two counts:
The system relieves pressure not only on our environment, but also on your finances in the long term.
Which statutory regulations must I take into consideration regarding top-up of the rainwater usage
system?
· Strict separation of drinking water and rainwater
DIN 1988 deals with the protection of drinking water from contamination.This means that a gravity feed must be used
for the supply of drinking water in rainwater usage systems. Naturally all Genvand drinking water feeders have been
equipped with a "gravity feed" as standard.
· Designation of pipes and tapping points
Tapping points must be designated in such a way that it is at all times clear which tapping points and pipes are carrying
rainwater.
To this end, Genvand offers a labelling set on page 21.
Are public subsidies available for rainwater usage systems?
The installation of systems for use of rainwater is now directly or indirectly supported by some municipalities as a
measure for active ground water protection. You can find relevant information as to local subsidy options from your
local building and environmental office.
