• One in every four ingredients in modern medicines are located in the rainforests.

• These include vincristine which treats leukemia in children and trumpet flowers whose pollen can open airways during asthma attacks although if it is used incorrectly it can cause death.

Human Influence

• Every second a football sized part of the rainforest is cut down.

• That means 86,400 football sized areas are cut down every day!

• In the beginning there were 6 million square miles of the rainforest existed now only 2.6 million square miles remain due to human influence.

Efforts being made

• The Nature Conservancy is currently working with its partners to protect tropical and temperate rainforests in 23 countries throughout North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific.

• Google is working with an indigenous tribe deep in the Amazon rainforest to protect their native lands from illegal encroachment
