Optics in “Discovery” Space Shuttle
Rainbow Research Optics provides optics that aid space shuttle safety.
RROI supplied several optics that were used in the objective lens assembly of the Laser Dynamic Range Imager (LDRI) system. The system was used by NASA, in the mid 2005, Discovery STS-114 mission, for the on-orbit inspection of the shuttle’s Thermal Protection System (inspection of the tiles). All shuttle flights now utilize RROI’s optics.

RROI responded by email to my request for quotation the very same day that I issued the RFQ- already a good sign. The prices quoted by RROI were very competitive with other prices, and the delivery time was by far the best -10 days as opposed to a typical 10 weeks, and this included fabrication of a new test plate, fabrication of the lenses, testing, and AR coating.
Test results supplied with the lenses showed that they were manufactured to well within the tolerances that I specified. This rapid response enabled me to get my portion of the project back on track, and really helped me "save face" with the project manager.
As a result of this excellent service, I have made RROI my preferred vendor for custom optics, and I whole heartedly recommend RROI to my colleagues.
