I have put together a series of activities. Some of them are worksheet based and others are more practical. Please select the activities that you are most

comfortable with and are best suited to your child’s interests and also to the resources you have at home. Please don’t feel that you have to do everything.

Practical Activities:

Draw or paint pictures of rainbow Fish and his friends swimming in the sea.

Colour in and cut out the characters from the story. Use them to retell your favourite part of the story. Can you retell the whole story?

What was your favourite part of the story? What happened in that part of the story? Draw a picture and label it. Listen for the initial sounds in the

words and have a go at writing them down. Please use lowercase letters.

Draw a picture of your friends and label it. Why are your friends special? What games do you like to play with them?

Top tip for adults. We have been working on hearing the first sound in words in our phonics. Ask your child to listen whilst you say the word ie fish

then say f, f, fish. Ask your child if they can hear the f sound and repeat with you f, f, fish. Use the alphabet mat, included in your pack, and help your

child to find the correct letter. With your help they could then label their drawing with the correct letter. Please use lowercase letters.

Play dough: make some dough and use it to make creatures that live under the sea. Can you make rainbow Fish and his friends? Can you make models

of your friends using the dough? Use your dough to decorate the fish template in your pack.

Make Rainbow Fish and his friends using paper plates or circles cut from paper.

Finger print rainbow fish. Decorate a fish shape using different coloured paint and your fingers.

Make some handprints using paint or draw around your hand. Cut the hand shapes out. Decorate them as fish. Add a lolly stick to make fish puppets.

Make a swimming fish in a bowl. Cut a slit in the fish bowl. Push your fish puppet through the slit and make it swim.

Make some fish from card board tubes.

Flatten the tube. Cut out a fish shape and

decorate.

Make a paper plate ocean picture. Add fish

and other sea creatures. A circle cut from

paper can be used instead of a paper plate.

Make a bouquet of hearts and give them to a special person.

Decorate the Stay Safe poster and display it in your window for everyone to see or give it to a special friend.

Make a card for a special friend.

Make an octopus with paper chain tentacles.

Make an octopus from a flattened cupcake case or a

circle of coloured paper.

Cutting skills – cut out the sea creatures at the end of

the pack and make your own sea picture.

Rainbow Fish was very good at sharing. Bake some cupcakes and share them with your family.

Play some board games and practise your turn taking and sharing skills.

Fish Maths

Colour in and cut out the fish. Choose a number card. Put that many fish into the fish bowl. Repeat with other numbers. If your child can recognise

numbers to 10 and can confidently count out to 10, increase the range of numbers and work with numbers to 15.

One more. Put 1 fish into the fish bowl. If you added 1 more fish to the bowl how many would be there be? Can you work this out in your head? Now

check by adding 1 more and counting the fish. Start with 1 fish and keep adding one more.

One more. Place your number cards face down. Choose a card. Put that number of fish into the bowl. If you added one more how many fish would

there be? Can you work this out in your head? Now check by adding 1 more and counting the fish.

One less. Put 10 fish into the fish bowl. If you had 1 less how many fish would be there be? Can you work this out in your head? Now check by taking 1

away and counting the fish. Keep taking one away so you have 1 less. How many do you have now?

Subtraction. Put some fish in the bowl. Roll a dice and take that number of fish away. How many fish are there now?

Phonics

This week we are going to learn to:

recognise s and a

hear the sounds s and a at the beginning of words

say the sounds s and a correctly

Activities :

Silly Soup You will need a bowl and a spoon. Cut out one set of picture cards and work on one sound at a time. Ask your child to name each picture. Ask them to

listen for the initial sound as you say the word stressing the initial sound ie ‘s, s, snow.’ Ask your child to repeat this after you. ‘s, s, snow.’

Now make silly soup, singing the rhyme ‘We are making silly soup. We’re making soup that’s silly. We’re going to put it in the fridge, to make it nice and chilly.’ Then

choose an object to put in the bowl. In goes ‘s, s, snow.’ Ask your children to say the initial sound of the object as they put it in the bowl.

When your child can confidently hear initial sound s and initial sound a, play with another set of initial sound cards. However you are only going to make soup with

objects that begin with one of those sounds.

Ask your child to find other objects in your house that begin with s or a and add them to the soup. If you have saved the sound pictures from last week you can play

with those too.

I spy lay out 2 sets of picture sound cards ie a and s pictures. Play I spy choosing only one sound ie I spy with my little eye something beginning with s. Show your

child the s card. Can they find all the pictures beginning s? You may need to help your child tune in to the sound by saying the word and stressing the initial letter ie

‘s, s, snow.’

Sound sorting Put out 2sets of letter cards ie s and a. lay out the initial sound picture cards. Can your child put the pictures that begin with a s next to the s card?

You may need to help your child tune in to the sound by saying the word and stressing the initial letter. ‘s, s, snow.’

You can also play these games with the sound cards from previous weeks.

Picture cards : s snow, spaghetti, strawberry, seal, sandcastle, snake

Picture cards : a alligator, ant, ambulance, anchor, apple, antler
