School Holidays 16-24 March— After Term 1

We opened the doors of Margaret Drive in 1987, admitting students with multiple disabilities, and children at risk who can benefit from early intervention. Rainbow Centre’s two schools have served thousands of children with special needs. Many have achieved success and made improvements from the early inter-vention and special education and therapy services. We recognise the need and importance of trained professionals in special needs. With our training and consultancy arm, Rainbow Centre has reached out to professionals, caregivers and volunteers locally and even beyond the shore of Singapore to Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar.

The theme of the year for Rainbow Centre is “TowaRds InClusion – Celebrating 20 years of Reaching Out & Collaboration” and as part of Rainbow Centre’s special anniversary, the third edition of ‘Rainbow Dreams’ was specially launched at the 20th Anniversary Dinner held on 6 November.

The book consists of sections specifically targeted to children with special needs in the Singapore context as well as how to recognize abnormal development in a child. The book also talks about the various medical conditions spanned over the spec-trum of special needs and addresses issues the child will ultimately face throughout adolescence and adulthood.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam along with more than 40 writers which include doctors, educationalists, professionals and par-ents who are actively involved in the care of children and adults with special needs contributed to the book. The President also shares his thoughts on ‘Rainbow Dreams’ in his foreword.

The previous two editions of ‘Rainbow Dreams’ were published in 1997 and 2002. The need for answers and resources about caring for those with special needs prompted the compilation of the third edition, which has updated information and an expanded scope of discussions. Proceeds of the book go towards the Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Young Children (EIPIC) Fund. Rainbow Dreams is priced at $25 and is sold at all major bookstores as well as Rainbow Centre.

RAINBOW CENTRE TURNS 20!

20th20th 2012 marks a very meaningful year for Rainbow Centre as it celebrates its milestone of 20 years in making a difference in special education. We were very happy and honoured to have Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat grace the occasion and share the joy with us. We were also delighted to have Professor Tommy Koh, Honorary Patron of Rainbow Centre as well as Mr Antony Phillipson, British High Commissioner and his wife join us for this wonderful occasion.

The annual dinner was a highlight of the year as it marked the 25th Anniversary of Margaret Drive and 20 years of establishment of Rainbow Centre. It was also a memorable night for staff and board members who received Long Service Awards for their con-tributions. This year the Rainbow Award was also given out to three recipients who have had outstanding performances in their area of work. The inaugural Innovation Award which saw four prizes given out with a tie in Silver place between two groups was also given out on the same night.

The night opened with the arrival of Minister Heng as the Chung Cheng High School (Yishun) Festival Drums Group started their performance. Staff were treated to performances by the MDS Dance Club as well as By Chance (consisting of Faridah from RCTC and her vocal bandmates) who did a wonderful ABBA medley to round off the night.

We would also like to take this opportunity to commend the recipients of the Rainbow Award: Mr Jimson Tham, Senior Occupa-tional Therapist, RCEIP (Margaret Drive), Ms Jaswan Kaur d/o Rattan Singh Special Education Teacher (Margaret Drive) and Mr Mohamed Yazid bin Mohamed Eunos, Special Education Teacher, (Yishun Park School).

The recipients of the Long Service Award have truly come a long way especially those receiving the 25 Years of Service. Thank you Jaizah HJ Embek, Sharifah Masturah Shahab, Dr Kenneth Lyen, Mrs S Sivagnanaratnam and Professor Lee Eng Hin for your unceasing support towards the Rainbow Centre. Executive Director Mrs June Tham-Toh Syn Yuen was surprised with a special tribute for her unending efforts to improve and lead Rainbow Centre to greater heights. We would like to congratulate Mrs June Tham as well as all award recipients of the night and each and every staff who are making a difference in someone’s life every-day.

RAINBOW CENTRE TURNS 20!

Anniversary Walk cum Carnival

15 September marked a really memorable and fun day for staff and students of Rainbow Centre as it was finally the day of the much anticipated anniversary walk and carnival at the Yishun Park campus. We were very honoured to have Prime Minster Lee Hsien Loong as the guest of honour and he led the 2 kilometre walk with much vigour as he chatted with the children of Rain-bow Centre. The theme of the walk “TowaRds InClusion – Celebrating 20 years of Reaching Out & Collaboration” is part of Rainbow Centre’s efforts to foster a cohesive and inclusive environment for the children and the society. As a voluntary organi-zation, Rainbow Centre continually requires support and assistance of the government and the community. We believe every-one plays a part in the society and it takes a village to build a community.

After the walk, the Prime Minister was treated to dance performances by the MDS Dance Club who has previously performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the same week! The set up for the carnival started as early as the day before as the entire school headed to Yishun Park school to pitch in and prepare the school for the big day. The carnival received great response and we would like to thank all who have helped for their hard work and donors and sponsors for their contributions in making the event a very successful one! Rainbow Centre would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Queenstown Baptist Church, staff and parents of Preschool by The Park.

We are also very grateful to the generosity of these donors and we would like to acknowledge them here:

Nippon Paint (S) Company Pte Ltd, Toteboard, Cargill Tropi-cal Palm Holdings Pte Ltd, Cargill TSF Asia Pte Ltd, Lee Foundation, Gaelic Inns Pte Ltd, Bunge Agribusiness Singa-pore Pte Ltd, Insurance and Financial Practitioners Associa-tion of Singapore, Angeline Ooi, Lim Eng Hock, Lau Chee Peng and many more whose support and donations helped raise more than $700,000 for our EIPIC Fund.

Rainbow Centre goes to the F1 Night Race! September was a month of celebration and festivities for Rainbow Centre as they headed down to the F1 Night Race upon the Prime Minster’s invitation. Staff and students got to meet with President Tony Tan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister S Iswaran. It was definitely a rare opportunity for the children and everyone had a great time touring the pits and watching the race Live on site.

Royal Visit at Rainbow Centre

On the afternoon of 12 September, Rainbow Centre welcomed some very distinguished guests all the way from England. As part of the Queen’s Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Tour , the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Singapore and Rainbow Centre had the honour of hosting them for an afternoon. It was a rare and wonderful opportunity, and the school’s atmosphere was filled with excitement as the hour drew near. The Duchess visited the art therapy class whilst the Duke had a chance to play ball with some of the children at the courtyard. The MDS Dance Club also performed ‘Reach for The Stars’ for the Royal Couple, who were seen enjoying the performances. Rainbow Centre is humbled and honoured to be able to play host to the Royal Couple and we are sure everyone had a great time during the visit.

EVENTS

Volunteer Appreciation Night

Many of our events are highly successful because of the unsung heroes—the Volunteers, who tirelessly come back to help us on many occasions. Rainbow Centre decided to pay tribute to these volunteers on 16 November by setting up a night of fun games over dinner as everyone got togeth-er for the meaningful occasion. We had our own rendition of “Don’t Forget The Lyrics”, Charades as well as many other games. Guests were treated to a feast of Roti Prata, Briyani and Satay, hot off the grill! They were also treated to beautiful song items by Jaizah’s daughter, and Jacqueline Chow, our music therapist from Yishun Park School. With all the hype going around the globe, there was no better way to round off the night than dancing to ‘Gangnam Style’ by Korean popstar, Psy, led by the Zumba instructors who definitely brought the night to an all new high. Tokens of appreciation were handed out to the volunteers and we would like to thank them for their undying efforts to help Rainbow Centre become a better place for our students.

S.T.A.R.S Panel Discussion at Singapore Management University

The Siblings That Are Really Special (S.T.A.R.S) Club is modelled after Sibshops®, originally run by the Sibling Support Project, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, Seattle, Washington, and now run by many other organisations worldwide. It seeks to provide opportunities for brothers and sisters of children with special needs in Singapore to obtain peer support and education within a recreational context. The social workers in charge of the programme were recently invited to be a part of a panel discussion held on 27 November which was organized by a group of first year undergraduate students from the Singapore Management University (SMU). The panel at the half day sharing workshop included social workers, a parent and siblings of those with special needs, including Fly Entertainment artiste George Young, who has two brothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The panelists shared their personal experiences and challenges encoun-tered as they were growing up with their siblings.

The S.T.A.R.S Programme also held a focus group earlier this year in May at Yishun Park School to understand the needs, concerns and issues that these siblings face daily as they discussed their experience of growing up together with another sibling who has special needs. Seven participants aged between 8 – 13 years attended the discussion and provided the STARS team with valuable insights in organizing activities which would both interest and benefit S.T.A.R.S participants in the future.

Innovation Award (iAwards) 2012

The Innovation Award was created to spark the innovative spirit in the staff of Rainbow Centre. A total of ten teams submitted and all of the entries were creative and well thought. The Gold award of this year’s Award was presented to G3’s ‘Go Green’ Project @ RC Yishun Park School which started off as a simple PPMD class theme. Teachers, Sarah and Ma-rianne Tan, had wanted their students’ learning and exploration to go beyond the classroom as they planned their lessons to revolve around the recycling theme. In order to inspire the students to walk the talk, the teachers and students put up banners and posters about recycling in the classrooms, minimart and around the school. During art and craft lessons, they learned to use different recyclable materials to create art work. Their efforts won them the Gold Award in the Innovation Award at Rainbow Centre and they were presented the prize by Minister of Education Mr Heng Swee Keat and Mrs June Tham, Executive Director of Rainbow Centre. It was a tough fight as there were many good entries. The Silver Award went to ‘A Student Leadership Initiative’ by The

Eagles’ @ RC-YPS and the Bronze award went to Visual Arts Champions with their project ‘Nature Art Competition and Exhibition’. We look for-ward to more innovative ideas from our staff in future. Congratulations to all winners!

Rainbow Centre receives generous donation from Specialist Dental Group

Rainbow Centre received a generous donation of $20,800 from The Specialist Dental Group (SDG) on 6 December and the celebration was marked with a humble cheque presentation at the Conference room of the Margaret Drive School. The donation will go towards the Rainbow Centre Dental Clinic, which is not funded by any source and has volunteer dentists coming in to help the children with their checkups.

“The Rainbow Centre Dental Clinic is close to our heart as Dr Elizabeth Tan, our Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry, has been a volunteer dentist with the Rainbow Centre for 13 years. Our team of paediatric dental nurses also assist Dr Tan with patients on a monthly basis at the Rainbow Centre.” Said Dr Helena Lee, one of the dentists from The Specialist Dental Group who con-sistently donates to charitable causes. The fundraising initiative originated with the SDG nurses who decided to replace their usual Christmas gift exchange with an activity that would benefit a charita-ble cause. They selected the Rainbow Centre to be the beneficiary, and the donations snowballed

when the dentists contributed generously and the final amount was matched by the SDG management. Thank you, Specialist Dental Group for this generous donation!

The cohort of STEP Kingfishers Students had an overnight camp for the first time in August and one of the much anticipated programme was the excursion to the Jurong Bird Park. The day started off with a visit to see the Penguins at the Penguin Coast. Part of the group then proceed-ed to take a tram ride while others stayed in the company of the penguins. The group also man-aged to catch the “Birds and Buddies” show while some others went straight for the water play. Volunteers from Cummins Inc came along as well and had a wonderful experience interacting with the children. Thank you, Cummins!

The Association for Music Therapy (Singapore) organised the second Music Therapy Symposium during the September holidays (31 August – 4 Sept) and Rainbow Centre was glad to be a part of it. Dr. Katrina Skewes McFerran, PhD, RMT and Ms. Eliza-beth Schwartz, MA, LCAT, MT-BC were the invited speakers for this symposium. The forum included a public forum, a symposium feature to the theme: Music and The Special Child in Early Intervention and Special Schools, as well as a teacher’s training titled: Use of Music in the School Environment: Whole brain learning and classroom transitions. Held at Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School on 3rd and 4th September, a great turnout of 32 partici-pants from various schools and therapists in the region proved the workshop to be a success. One teacher wrote: “It was an eye-opener. There are so many layers to give help dynamically. I learned about having systems, and meeting child's needs and tran-sitions.” The Association for Music Therapy (Singapore) looks forward to a continued partnership with Rainbow Centre to increase the awareness of Music Therapy in Singapore.

2nd Music Therapy Symposium 2012 RCMDS National Day Celebrations 2012

On August 8 2012, students from EIPIC, ESTEP, STEP & PPMD, celebrated National Day with a special concert based on the theme “Loving Singapore, Our Home”. Children, teachers, therapists, helpers and volunteers all wore red and white and our Master of Ceremonies , Hevina, led the audience through a wonderful programme of songs and performances. The concert was enjoyed by all and the children were delighted by the finale- a cloud of balloons descending from the ceiling! We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our volun-teers, including the student and teacher volunteers from Greenridge Secondary School and the corporate volunteers from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). Without the generous donation from CAAS, this event would not have been possible. Thank you!

“We are proud that the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge chose to visit Rainbow Centre and the visit was so well organised and it was a success. This reflects the great work being done by the teachers and staff of Rainbow Centre and probably raises expectations for even higher standards of excellence! As always, we are happy to support in this journey.”

Prabal Bhowmick—Parent

“After 10 years in Singapore, and countless trips past the Rainbow Centre, I plucked up the courage three years ago to go inside and ask if any volunteer help was needed. My own children were getting older and as a stay-at-home mother, my time was beginning to free up. Although I have volunteered at my own children’s school for the past 13 years and done other volunteer work including helping with different activities at my church, something about Rainbow Centre intrigued me when I passed by it. I was warmly welcomed from the first day and haven’t looked back since! I love coming to Rainbow Centre every week (in fact, I’d come every day if I could). There is such a vibrant atmosphere from the moment you enter. I just love the way the teachers interact with each student at their level, drawing them out and how the children respond to the positive atmosphere; it practically spills out of every classroom. I’ve been in Pebbles, Starfish & Coral classes and it’s lovely to see the children growing in confidence and independence before they move up to STEP. I am sure I get much more out of it than the little bit I can contrib-ute and I always leave with a smile on my face.”

TESTIMONIALS

NEW BOARD MOVEMENT

“I just wanted to let you how much my family and I appreciate everything the Rainbow Centre has done to help Chen Xun (Coral—ESTEP) improve his behaviour and auditory processing. He started from having his childcare teachers comment on his behaviour problems - he always wandered around in class and has been kicked out by two childcare centres in the past and now he’s able to sit down to learn and listen to teacher’s instructions at the PCF Kindergarten this year. It’s truly a tribute to both his and the teacher’s efforts from the Rainbow Centre and Chen Xun has especially enjoyed being in Teacher Andi’s class. He definitely could-n’t have done it without the teachers at the Rainbow Centre. The Rainbow Centre has helped built the foundation for improved focus and social interactions. The impact of the Rainbow Centre is so significant. It will help him for the next phase of his life. I truly can’t thank you enough and will be forever grateful. We are thankful that there are teachers like Teacher Andi in your midst. Chen Xun will thank you one day himself, we are sure of it.
