Following the United Nations Earth
Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the
Haudenosaunee held a Grand Council to
discuss the environmental degradation of
our communities. In accordance with the
Great Law of Peace, the Grand Council
passed and agreed, based on
Haudenosaunee protocols and cultural
beliefs, to establish the Haudenosaunee
Environmental Task Force (HETF).

Did You Know . . .
When charged particles from the sun strike atoms in
Earth's atmosphere, they cause electrons in the
atoms to move to a higher-energy state. When the
electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they
release a photon: light. This process creates the
beautiful aurora, or northern lights.

On this episode of the podcast we were lucky enough to catch
Vince Schiffert (Turtle clan) for a quick interview before his
Tuscarora History presentation at the Great Law of Peace
recital (8/12-8/19).
He gave us his time to talk about the grapevine story, and his
background on how he became so entrenched in learning and
teaching Tuscarora history.
Nya:we for listening and we hope you enjoy one of our best
interviews yet!!

preparations for your vehicle to be
towed to the facility, you need to
make sure that you’ve removed any
personal effects - as things tend to
accumulate in vehicles over time.
Step 5.) Request a
Certificate of Destruction (CoD).
You may need this documentation
in order to get a tax deduction.
Check with the recycling facility to
make sure that the CoD has been
mailed, as you can receive this only
after the car has been scrapped. If
you don’t receive it immediately,
don’t fret, but be sure to inform the
facility you haven’t received it yet.
Before you take out your
shiny new car for a spin, remember
to take care of your current one
first. There are many ways to
dispose of your old vehicle in spite
of its condition, but make sure to
prove your commitment to Mother
Earth and be eco-friendly.
Remember:
The oils and fluids from a junk
car will pollute the
groundwater.
Burning tires will pollute the
air, making the air toxic for

Step 2.) Get your car title in
order, and transfer ownership to the
facility so you don’t incur any
liabilities by accident. Most
facilities and dealerships will do
this for you, though there may be an
additional fee for the paper work, so
if you want to save some cash, head
over to the Department of Motor
Vehicles and follow the procedures
provided there.
Step 3.) Arrange for pick
up. Make sure that the agreement is
fully documented. You should
choose a time and date when you
can be there in person to meet the
driver when they come to take the
vehicle.
Step 4.) Once you’ve made
R ecycling your car is an
environmentally friendly way
to rid yourself of a car that is doing
nothing but sitting in your lawn and
rusting away - and can ear a few
extra dollars while doing so. Just
follow these few short steps and
you’ll be done in no time:
Step 1.) Choose a reputable
recycling facility that abides by
safe, environmental practices. Most
businesses follow strict regulations
which make their practices both
ethical and environmentally
friendly. However, there are some
companies which will often bend
the rules or cut corners, so make
sure to do your research before you
enter into any transactions.
Remember that it’s not always
about money, doing the right thing
environmentally should be a
priority too. If you do not know
who to take your vehicle to, here
are a list of a few places you can
choose.

T he summer fun is coming to an end
and school is just around the corner.
As we get closer to fall, the sun starts to

Our European Cherry Fruit fly
survey is coming to an end for the
Summer of 2018. We will be
taking down the yellow sticky
traps in the next few weeks. We
would like to say Nya·we to all
the residents that allowed access
through their yards or fields for
sampling. We would, also, like to
say Nya·we to the whole
community for not disturbing any
of our traps for the sampling
season.
As of August 22, 2018, we have
had 3 confirmed sites with the
fruit flies present within the
Tuscarora territory. These sites
were located in the northwest
corner of the Nation Territory,
actually closer to sites in the Town
of Lewiston, testing positive. USDA
had recommended using a pesticide,
but Tuscarora does not encourage
the use of pesticides within the
Nation Territory. We will be
removing the fruits from the trees
and the surrounding area of the
confirmed sites. We are doing this
because the flies’ larvae are in the
fruits at this stage of their
development and removing the fruit
will greatly suppress the spread of
this invasive insects next year. The
fruits will be collected and placed in
specified bags then properly
disposed of by the USDA.
If more of our samples test
positive for the European cherry
fruit fly the home owner will be
notified and TEP will come
remove the fruit. Nya·we

O ver the next few weeks, Indian
Health Service (IHS) will be
conducting a potholing study as part
of the second phase study on the
feasibility of Community Water here
at Tuscarora. The potholing study
will determine the depth to bedrock
throughout the Nation, which will
help to develop actual costs for
laying water pipes for a community-
wide system. The water main pipe
has to be installed at 5 feet to ensure
that it won’t freeze during the winter
months. We know there are parts of
the Nation that have bedrock less
than 5 feet down which means we
will need to jackhammered during
construction.
To determine depth to bedrock, the
selected contractor, Thew Associates-
Land Surveyors, will auger down to
measure where there is shallow bedrock
(5ft or less) and this step will be done
every 100 feet on the edge of the roads.
Once the selected site is complete, the
contractor will fill the hole and
continue onto the next location. The
contractors will avoid driveways and
will not be in any peoples’ yards.
Indian Health Service did notify the
New York State Department of
Transportation about this study to
ensure that there will be no
compromise of the roadbed.
The contractors, Indian Health
Service employees and TEP staff will
be alongside the roads during this
phase so please be aware and drive
safely (BELOW: The photo is from
Indian Hill, and show’s the kind of
equipment and work you will see
during this study.)
Once this contractor completes the
field work then IHS staff will
compile the data and began
developing a more reasonable
understanding of what this project
might cost. Along with this cost
analysis they will also develop a
timeline what the next steps are
needed to move the process along.
In the past we made this information
available to all the clans and this is
how we’d like to continue
disseminating this information to
Tuscarora. Continue to ask your clan
mother about this information.

TUSCARORAS WILL OBSERVE
FOUNDING OF TEMPERANCE BODY Society For Control Of Drinking Is 100 Years Old
Indians of the Tuscarora Nation at Sanborn are preparing to
observe 100 years of temperance in their tribe.
At the next meeting scheduled to take place in the Longhouse
“when the moon reaches its full,” the chiefs and sachems of the
tribes will exhort their people to follow in the footsteps of their
forefathers.
The tribesmen will be particularly warned not to drink excessively
the new brew legalized by modification of the Volstead Act.
Addresses will be delivered by William Chew, president of the
Council of chiefs of the Tuscaroras, and by Chief Edgar Rickard
and Chief J. Printup.
We’re “Dry” in 1800.
President Chew is a direct descendent of one of the founders of the
Temperance organization. Although tribal records show existence
of the Temperance society in 1800, it was not until 1833 that the
Tuscaroras reorganized their society and drafted a constitution.
The great teacher of temperance recognized in Tuscarora lore was
named Ga-Ne-O-Di-Yo, meaning Handsome Lake.
The influence of his eloquence, with which he enforced the
doctrine of temperance had the effect of forming the original
society,” said Chief Rickard. “In 1832 there was a general
temperance society formed, embracing all the, then, difference
Seneca reservations, and in the year 1833, the Tuscarora
reorganized into its own unit.
“After the death of ‘Handsome Lake,’” continued the chief,
“Saseda-Wa of the Tonawandas carried on his great work. Not
only was he the grandson of ‘Handsome Lake’ but also a nephew
of the immortal hero of the Six Nations Indians - Red Jacket. He
was born in the Indian Village of Ga-No-Wan-Ges, near Akron,
about 1774.
The Six Nation Indians were the first in the land to recognize the
evils of liquor especially to their people. They were the first to
take steps to instruct, by an organized campaign, that the make-up
of the Indian barred him from using “firewater” and keep his head
at the same time.
“We take pride in the foresight of our forefathers in this respect as
we also take pride in the fact that we were the first to discard
buckskin for clothing and weave our own cloth.”
The century old scrolls of the Tuscaroras show that the chiefs
