Lustig and Jean-Marc Schwarz of the College of OsteopathicMedicine at Touro University conducted an expirement todetermine how removing added sugars would affect metabolichealth
The ExperimentSubjects: 43 kids with high blood pressure, unhealthycholesterol levels or signs of too much fat in their livers.
Method: given foods with similar levels of fat, carbs, andprotein; added sugars were substituted with starch and reducedfrom 28% to 10%.
Time Period: 9 days
ResultsWeight loss: 2 poundsTriglyceridemeasurement ofcholesterol fell by 33pointsBad cholesterol (LDL)fell by 10 pointsBlood pressuredecreased by 5 pointsBlood sugar and insulinlevels both decreased
Additional Take Aways
Removing processed sugars made subjects feel moresatisfied, as if they had more food, and provided nosugar rush.
