VISION STATEMENT: “ A LEADING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT MAXIMISING PEOPLE’S POTENTIAL “
To our school communityGreet ings f rom your Board! Welcome to all our new families, we hope you and your children are enjoying your Hukanui experience. Hopefully you managed to make it to one of our new parent morning teas where you would have had the opportunity to chat to one of us.This letter contains a mid year summary of learning results and news on people and projects. As a Board our role is one of governance and we operate very much as a team but we also have portfolios that we have a particular interest in. David, our Principal, keeps us updated with the latest information on student progress and achievement against National Standards. We also regularly review programmes and look at ways we can provide support where it is needed most to make sure all our children continue to make the progress expected of them.
PEOPLEWe have a settled Board with no new members. We also have a very stable staff with one new teacher employed this year due to roll growth. We will also employ another teacher in Term Four to assist in the reception room. We are fortunate to have a passionate, motivated group of teachers and support personnel. Through a robust a p p r a i s a l a n d p r o f e s s i o n a l development system we ensure they have exposure to the latest thinking and resources in education so they can provide quality teaching programmes. LEARNING and STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTBy now you will have received your child’s mid year learning report and participated in the learning conferences. You will notice the teacher’s report was printed from our new system. We hope you found the separate boxes for next learning steps and how you can help at home a useful improvement.
SCHOOL WIDE RESULTSWe are pleased to be able to share with you our mid year learning results against national standards in reading, writing and mathematics. Overall teacher judgements were made using test results, class work and teacher observations. Remember that these are stated as against expectations for the end of year. Writing• Overall 72% of our children are at or above the
national standard already at mid year.• 65% of our Maori children are at or above.• 80% of our Pacifica children are at or above.Reading• Overall 92% of our children are at or above the
national standard already at mid year.• 88% of our Maori children are at or above.• 100% of our Pacifica children are at or above. The Board has funded extra teaching support in reading and writing with Mrs Hendrikse taking Skill Buster sessions and Miss Webb taking extra Junior groups for literacy skills and Reading Recovery children. Thanks to ongoing sponsorship from Mr & Mrs Brunton, the One Day Writing School has been in operation again this year with author Talia Evered working with thirty children every Monday. Teachers in Year 5&6 have also made a focused effort to lift the levels of our lower achievers in reading this half year.Mathematics• Overall 74% of our children are at or above the
national standard already at mid year.• 72% of our Maori children are at or above.• 70% of our Pacifica children are at or above. The Year 4, 5 and 6 students also sat formal P.A.T. mathematics tests. This national test covers all the strands, not just numeracy, and compares our children to their New Zealand year group. We were really encouraged to see that our children as a group are performing very well as demonstrated in these graphs.
POLICIES and PROCEDURESWe continually review our policies and procedures according to the timetable in our School Charter. Please view our Policy folder in the school foyer.
LOOKING AHEADNext year there will be Board elections, feel free to talk to any of us if you are interested in putting your name forward for the Board. It is a very responsible but worthwhile role. In the meantime your current Board is committed to continue working together with you, our children and our staff to make sure our school remains ‘A leadinglearning environment maximising people’s potential’.Remember, Board meetings are held at 7 pm in the staffroom. Dates are published in the newsletter and any members of the school community are welcome to attend.
