Science STEM Event

On Thursday 20 June, 12 of our Year 8 students attended a STEM event at Cardiff museum hosted by

Cardiff University.

The day was all about the possibility of colonising Mars in their lifetimes and got the students to think

about the multitude of scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical challenges that they will

need to overcome in order to achieve this. The group were very enthusiastic and got a lot from the day.

Year 12 Mock interviews - Mrs Youssef

A huge thank you to all parent volunteers that gave up their time to assist us with the mock interviews on

Tuesday 25 June. It is such a worthwhile experience for the students in Year 12 to experience an interview

before it really counts. If you would like to help us in next year's mock interviews, please do not hesitate to

contact me at [email protected].

First Give Final - Thursday 4 July 2019

The First Give final takes place on Thursday 4 July in the Main Hall from 5pm-6.30pm. The charities being

represented are Alzheimers Society Cymru, Meningitis Now, Mind Cymru, Rainbow of Hope, Marie Curie

and Llamau. The students are competing in front of a panel of judges to win £1000 for their chosen charity.

Please do come along and support this fantastic cause - a good turn out in the audience would be great.

Good luck Year 8 finalists... I cannot wait to see the final presentations!

Year 10 Work Experience – 1-5 July 2019

Year 10 will commence their work experience placements week beginning Monday 1 July. I delivered an

assembly to Year 10 on Tuesday to discuss final arrangements and sent a summary letter via Parentmail to

parents/guardians.

If they have not done so already, please could you encourage your child to make contact with their placement supervisor this week to discuss final arrangements regarding the following:

Clothing and footwear expectations Travel arrangements Lunch provision Expected start/finish time and hours Any other considerations specific to the placement Please ensure the liability insurance has been requested and sent to [email protected].

I will be making contact with supervisors during the week to check on the pupils’ progress. If your child is unable to attend their work placement for any reason, please ensure that both the supervisor and the school have been informed. If your child has not secured a placement (whereby I have not received the paperwork), they will be expected to be in school from Monday 1 to Friday 5 July. If not they will be marked as absent and a truancy call will be made.

I hope Year 10 take this opportunity to develop and learn new skills and enjoy themselves in a new

environment and I wish them the very best of luck.

Geography Fieldtrips

It has been a very busy couple of weeks in the Geography Department. On Thursday 13 and Friday 14 June, 105 Year 9 Geography GCSE students visited the River Ilston in the Gower to complete their data collection on flows. Despite the horrendous weather forecast we were fortunate enough to escape the rain and have two relatively sunny days on the river. The students accessed 6 sites along the river and worked in small groups to collect primary data on stream width, depth, velocity and gradient. Since returning to school they have been processing this data in preparation for their Unit 3 Exam next November.

On Thursday 20 June, 50 Year 10 GCSE Geography students visited Cheddar Gorge to assess the impact of tourism. Students were able to complete environmental quality surveys and questionnaires throughout the village of Cheddar. We were fortunate to listen to a talk on the function of Cheddar Caves as a business and receive inside information on how the business intends to develop in the future. The students will use this information to prepare for their fieldwork exam in November. Visiting the caves is always fascinating and there was even some opportunity to do some cheese tasting!

On both trips the students’ behaviour was exemplary. They were a real credit to the school. Well done to all Year 9 and Year 10 Geographers! A massive thank you to Miss Evans, Mr Daniels, Mrs Jones, Miss Morris and Mr Probert who assisted on the fieldtrips.

Volunteers Needed

For every group of gymnasts, there is a volunteer somewhere in the background helping them fulfil their

potential. But as gymnastics’ popularity continues to grow, we need more volunteers than ever to help run

this thriving sport.

High Energy Gymnastics is a new gymnastics club set up by Welsh Gymnastics coach, Claire Bryant at Bryn

Deri Primary School. The club is looking for some volunteers to help with their gym club. If you have a

background in gymnastics/sport, are over the age of 13 and are available to help out between 3.45 and

5.45pm on a Wednesday evening at Bryn Deri Primary School then please contact:

[email protected]

Successful applicants will be able to complete the Welsh Gymnastics Sports Leaders qualification and

qualify as a millenium volunteer.

Alternatively, if you would like more information please email or visit Mrs Knight in H3.

Instrument Cupboard

There are many unclaimed instruments gathering dust in our instrument storage cupboard that do not

have names on. Please could students take instruments home or ensure they have names on so we can

undertake an audit of left over instruments.

From September, there will be the opportunity for unclaimed instruments to be loaned out to students

wishing to learn a new instrument.

Instrument Taster Session On Thursday 4 July, Cardiff and the Vale County Music Service will be demonstrating instruments and running trial sessions where students can have a quick go to see if it something they would like to take up further. If your child is interested in trying an instrument, please ask them to sign up with a Music teacher as soon as possible.

Instrument Amnesty If you have any unused instruments gathering dust that you no longer want - we will be happy to give them

a new home!

London 'Adrian Mole' Musical Theatre Trip Please ensure all consent forms are returned to Mrs Power and final payment is paid as soon as possible.

Tuesday 2 July / Wednesday 3 July Year 7 Beatboxing Workshops.
