    2/28

    DESCRIPTION:

Students may produce a talk radio show finding a way to make it fresh and not imitating showsthat are already on the net or air.

This project will give the opportunity to students to show their talents: in addition to investigating, there will be opportunities for individuals to work on design, photography, illustration, video, music, writing and performing and broadcasting. Students will be encouraged to concentrate on thequality of what they produce rather than quantity.

If these first radio programs are the result of hard work and are a success, it may be worth tocreate our own radio station.

    OBJECTIVE(S):

The main objective of this project is to embark students in multi-skill project that allows them to usethe skills they have and at the same time they can gain knowledge to be better writers,

researchers, public speakers, managers and critical thinkers. To work cooperatively with others and independently of the teacher towards a mutually agreedgoal.

To use language creatively dealing with real subject matter, rather than purely linguistic objectives.

To Become involved in and responsible for the project gaining self-discipline and organizationalskills.

To discuss, accept and respect different points of view

To produce a talk radio Show that reflects the interests, talents, and creativity of the students.

    DRIVING QUESTION:

Can we be autonomous in our process of learning? What can we do to touch our community in a positive way? What kind of issues or problematic situations can we face when creating a talk radio program?

This project is an opportunity to exhibit the knowledge students have gained. S tudents shouldproduce a talk radio show during the third term taking into account the understandingand experience they gained in the previous project GOOD NEWS FROM BOGOTAand during the fourth term they will create a Web radio station. ( regular webcast orpodcast)In addition it would be great to include in the radio station some of the TV

programs that were produced during the first semester.

At the beginning of the term, an orientation session will be held at which students will be told thatthey are going to be in charge of the design and production of a talk radio show. They will asked aseries of questions so that they can brainstorm about this project. (Who will be your targetaudience? How would you like to broadcast your show? Streaming audio? Podcasting? Whatequipment will we need? How are we going to get that equipment? What roles will we need to fill inorder to produce the show? What skills and knowledge will we need? What are we going to do toget that knowledge? What would be our limitations?)

During the first part of the project students will create the radio program`s rubric. In this part they

will work in groups of 5 people to decide on the name, logo, slogan and theme music. They mustrecord the rubric and burn it to a CD; in addition, a design must be included.

During the second part of the project students will set the goals of the show and will discuss aboutthe topics and sections to be included. They will have to present a proposal of the program. After the approval of the proposal, students must write down the script of the show.

In the third part of the project students will broadcast the show live, it will be recorded at the sametime and they will have to submit a CD.

In the last part of the project students will listen to their shows and get feedback from their classmates, they will discuss, evaluate and decide what needs to be changed or re-estructuredin terms of sound effects, introductory music, presenters etc.

Students will record and edit the final version of their show to be launched in the site of the Englishdepartment.

How do I prepare a program proposal forradio/TV?

In order to request transmission at SALTO, it is important that you present a

clear and complete proposal. This allows SALTO to asses the new programquickly, and at the same time forces new program makers to think carefullyabout what their program will look like, and how they are going to realizethis. With this clarification we are trying to help you list all things necessary;affairs each program maker will have to deal with. Make sure your proposalis only two A4pages, not longer than that. As supplements you need to sendthe program format and the program demo at cd or minidisc (radio), dvd orD-tape (television). Your program proposal should at least contain thefollowing subjects:

The general genre of your program

For example; will it be a sport or music program, or a talk

show? Will it be live or tape on desk? What will the duration

of the program be and how frequently will it be broadcasted?

Will you present journalistic and objective information or

do you specifically choose your line of approach

to be colored? Information about what is accepted and

what is not can be found in our brochure General Terms (these,

are in Dutch) which can be requested through the secretariat or

can be read on our website www.salto.nl .

    Description of the atmosphere

Will the program be trendy and flashy or instead calm and sober?

Colorful, cheerful or serious; informal or businesslike; approachable ormeant for an expert audience? Are you aiming at the atmosphere of acertain target group, region or country?

    The presentation

How will the program be presented? Will the presenters mainly presentitems or are there several interviews and/or coverages? Will you be using

music as a diversion or as an essential part of the program? Who will bepresenting and why did you choose this specific person/persons? Will they

    Target audience of program

Please be as specific as possible with regards to the targeted programaudience. Content of the program

Provide specific examples of program components that you want to use inyour broadcasts. This is necessary for both the subjects and the categories. For example; are you trying to raise specific subjects in as many ways as

The program can consist of interviews or of previous reported coveragesand with the categories you can think of items like phone calls fromlisteners, contests, puzzles, and so on.

A time line for your broadcast

    00:01:20 - 00:03:20 fragment about

    00:03:20 - 00:06:20 interview with

    Continuation

Will this format be the model of all your future broadcasts?

    Financial support

How will the broadcasts be financed and who is responsible for thepayments? Will the program be paid by more than one organization or areyou using private donors? Are you recruiting advertisors?

    Technical completion

Do you have the necessary equipment or will you be renting this (either atSALTO or somewhere else)? Do you have your own employees for thetechnical arrangements? In order to use the SALTO radio studios it is

mandatory that each technician attends a technical course; will he/she be

  • 8/6/2019 Radio Template

    18/28

able to take this course? In what manner (eg tape or disc) will you deliverthe broadcasts of your program?
