System DescriptionThe Personnel Locator System AN/AYD-1
(PLS) consists of the airborne Radio-Set Person-nel Locator AN/ARS-6(V) (hereinafter referredto as the AN/ARS-6(V) and the ground-basedRadio Set AN/PRC-112. Using a predeterminedSurvivor ID Code, the AN/ARS-6(V) is designedto selectively locate and home-on a particularRadio Set. The Radio Set is capable of beinglocated with minimum action required from theoperator. The Radio Set is also capable of normaltwo-way communications. A Program Loader isused for pre-flight programming (consisting ofthe Survivor ID Code and two predeterminedfrequencies) of the Radio Set.

transmissions over Line-of-Sight paths. TheRadio Set transmits amplitude modulated (AM)voice on 121.5 MHz, 243.0 MHz, 282.8 MHz,Channel A (predetermined programmed fre-quency), or Channel B (predetermined pro-grammed frequency) as selected by the Radio SetChannel/Mode selector.
Mission success is dependent only upon theproper functioning of the operator's equipmentand the equipment on the rescue aircraft. Duringmost of the mission, the avionics equipmentfunctions as a transponder in response to interro-gation requests. This concept enhances thesystem's covertness and maximizes the operator'sRadio Set battery life. The avionics systeminterrogates the operator's Radio Set, therebyobtaining the range and direction to the operator.The pilot/copilot updates the avionics system byusing interrogations as the approach to theoperator is made. When the Search and Rescue(SAR) aircraft is within 1-3 nautical miles of theoperator, the pilot/copilot may put the avionicssystem in the continuous interrogation mode. The

Earphone ConnectorsProvides connector for earphone quiet opera-

Functional DescriptionThe Radio Set functions as a survival radio/
transponder which receives an interrogation on apredetermined UHF frequency (225.000 to299.975 MHz in 25 kHz steps), and transmits aresponse message on the same frequency. Theinterrogation and response data are of a similarmodulation format. Data is transmitted usingboth amplitude and phase modulation.
A functional block diagram of the Radio Setis provided in the figure on the left. Duringoperation a modulated signal is received/trans-mitted through the antenna to/from the receiver/transmitter. Signal processing occurs within thereceiver/transmitter. Audio is output eitherthrough the speaker/microphone, or through theearphone if attached. Audio input is alwaysthrough the speaker/microphone. Modes of OperationTransponder Mode
The Radio Set functions as a transponder,detecting the interrogated ID code. If the ID codeis identical to that programmed into the RadioSet memory (Survivor ID Code), the Radio Setresponds by keying the Radio Set transmitter andtransmitting ranging modulation. The DMEindicator indicates the presence of a properlydecoded interrogation/response.
Emergency Beacon ModeThe Radio Set functions as a survival location

General InformationOperator's Preventive Maintenance Checks
and Services (PMCS) are the scheduled inspec-tions and care required to keep the Radio Set ingood operating condition.
Except as noted, routine checks like equip-ment inventory, dusting, washing, checking forfrayed, cracked or broken cables, loose connec-tors, proper operation of control knobs andindicators are not listed as PMCS. These arethings that you should do anytime you see thatthey must be done.
All PMCS must be done as scheduled. If yourequipment must be in use all the time, check andservice those items you can without stoppingoperation. Perform complete PMCS when theRadio Set is off.

Operational NotesThe effective range of the PLS equipment can
be severely limited if the Radio Set is not in aline-of-sight path to the rescue aircraft. In con-junction with escape and evasion requirements,the operator should avoid positioning in a depres-sion and should position the Radio Set at thehighest point possible in order to obtain maxi-mum effective range.
When operating the Radio Set, keep theantenna in a vertical position. Do not point theantenna toward the expected location of therescue aircraft.
Pressing PTT switch while the Radio Set isactivly responding to interrogation (DME indica-tor blinking), will disrupt the ranging process.

Set the antenna to its proper position forreception and transmission of radio signals. Setthe Radio Set ON/OFF/VOL switch to ON.Adjust the ON/OFF/VOL switch to a comfort-able audible level, or mute the Radio Set speakerby connecting the earphone.
Transmit a 121.5 MHz BeaconPress down on the Channel/Mode Indicator
switch to release the lock, and rotate selector to121.5 BCN.
