Welcome everyone to the February/Valentine issue o RADIOPLAY. Tis month, we have an interview with writer/director Kim West about her show Serendipity, a review o Wave Editor, a tutorial about editing in Garageband and

    one matching game.

Tis is the last month that our editor Fiona edits our magazine articles and we are still looking or a replacement.

One piece o very good news is that we now have a new person on our sta . Brendan OReilly, a reporter or Te

Southampton Press, plans to contribute articles starting with this issue.

I have been very busy or the past couple o months so there are only two comic strips that I created last month (January)

and the month be ore (December). Hope ully, Ill have time soon to go back to producing 4-comic strips per month.

One nal note, in the orum, Fiona posted a tip that when listening to new producers work, you can use so tware such as

Audacity to check or volume levels. By doing this, you can prevent yoursel rom getting a shock in case rom any sudden

increase in volume in a radio play that you are listening to.

With sci- , antasy, horror, superheroes and action-adventure dominating the eld o web-based audio serials, shows aboutordinary people that sometimes take a romantic tack are ew and ar between.

But one new show, Serendipity, promises to be di erentthat is to say, normal.

I just thought it would be a change rom the norm to actually have a somewhat normal show! says writer/director Kim West.Tats actually what motivated me. I wanted to try something di erent and see how people would respond to it.

Serendipity ollows the lives o our siblings who share a townhouse and that o their cousin Jo. But theyre not just amily.Teyre best riends.

Te whole idea was to show how amily can be your best riends too and that there doesnt always have to be all this crazy, unrealistic drama going on, West explains.

Also, that the smallest, or even biggest in some cases, o incidents that happen could alter a persons uture. Not everything

happens or a reason or is destined. Its the weird, crazy small things that occur everyday that no one really notices or seem to bebothersome, or even tragic at rst, but are really cause or the great li e they lead today.

Te middle children, aylor and Chloee, are sisters who are as same as they are di erent, according to the series synopsis. Teireccentric grandmother gave them her ca , which specializes in hot chocolate, be ore leaving the country a year ago. Te sistersrun things the best they can at the ca , though their good nature has them hiring a less-than-enthusiastic sta that nearly drivesaway the customers.

Church, the youngest, is an angry teen who doesnt quite see the world like others do. Te eldest sibling, Jonny, hates his job andtries to nd solace at the bottom o a bottle.

And their cousin/attorney Jo is constantly nding hersel in between the bickering siblings.

Te ortunate accidents that have kept the amily together will all be explained as the show goes on, West promises.

aylor, who is highlighted in the pilot episode, is notorious among her riends and amily or giving people a hard time. But aregular customer may be melting her heart.

Its that guy, Chloee deduces. Tat really cute, mysterious one that always comes in on Monday mornings and orders the samething every time.

And aylor always repeats his orderthe Wintergreen, minus the whipped topping and with extra spearmintbe ore he hasthe chance to say it, Chloee points out.

Get real, aylor protests. You have no idea what youre talking about. I know all the regulars orders. But aylors excuses dont hold up under scrutiny.

Whether she will take server-client relationship to the next step with her wintergreen-sipping mystery beau, is still unclear as o the rstepisode. And West says her mind isnt made up about that yet either.

Teres a part in the second episode that may destroy aylors crush, but I havent quite decided that yet, West says.

And aylor is not the only sibling with romance, one way or another, in her uture. Tere will de nitely be some other guys coming in andout o their lives, according to West.

Chloee will probably be the next in line or a romance o her own, and Jos love interest, Matt, will likely make an appearance, West says.

As or the guys, Jonnys not real outspoken when it comes to dating, so you may hear talk o girls, but there may never be any around whithe other siblings are there, she says. Church, ehh, he has no interest in the opposite sex right now.

Tere actually will be a Valentines Day episode. Un ortunately it wont be as romantic as one might think...

Serendipity is the rst original audio drama by West, 22, a sports medicine student at Eastern Michigan University. West, known asKimiLynn at the Voice Acting Alliance, released the premiere episode on the rst o the year.

Te show actually is based on real li e, or well, loosely based, she says. I created these characters around the personalities o my own siband our cousin.

Some o the events in the show took place in real li e, like certain conversations and outings, she added. Or at least, these are things that would normally occur in our everyday lives. Tats where I take a lot o my ideas rom.

And the townhouse the Serendipity characters share is based on a real house.

O course, the ca doesnt really exist, and the eccentric grandmother doesnt, West notes, joking, more like the crazy grandma does.

Wests also recently started production on a radio play based on youth ction author K. A. Applegates Everworld series. Everworld isprobably the exact opposite o Serendipity, which is why I started it, to have a show on both extremes, West says.

West is working on the orthcoming show with MrWest16, to be released under their production company, WestSociety, at dbz2.mypodcastcom.

Like many others amateur audio drama writers and directors, she also tries her hand at voice acting. Im still airly new at this, she admitSo I dont go overboard with the auditioning. Nonetheless, her voice can be heard in wilight o the wins and upcoming Resident Eviand Sailor Moon projects.

West also keeps busy working customer service at the only IKEA in the state o Michigan, which happens to be reezing right now, she sId say being the shape o a mitten is rather appropriate.

Serendipity Can be ound at Sou dLa ter or My odcast.com. Te release date o episode 2 is BD.

a foating tab, so you can arrange them to wherever you want them to be in your desktop. You can also hide the tabs i you arenot working with them.

o start working on this so tware, you can either import a le (File->Import...), record a sound (Window->Recorder), or openup a previously saved project (File->Open...).

Once you have an audio track, you can add e ects to it using either the Process tab or some e ects that are built-in your AppleMac OS X (Layer->Add E ect->Audio Unit->Apple). Te process tab includes the basic e ects such as changing the pitch orthe speed and gives you the ability to normalize the le. One o the e ects that I havent seen in any o the so tware that I haveused is the Reverse Audio e ect. I guess that one does not need to be explained as to what it does.

Te built-in e ects that you can use are the same ones that are present in Garageband - that start with AU such as A UMatrixReverb and AUPitch.

A neat eature in Wave Editor is working with layers. For example, i you are recording many lines and some o them need ane ect where your character is located in a di erent environment such as a large room with your voice echoing, then you cancreate a separate layer or those lines. So you can have your normal lines on one layer and your echoey lines on a di erent layer.Tey are like separate tracks except that the inter ace does not separate them into di erent rows. Once youve nished record-ing your lines, you can export them to a variety o ormats such as MP3s, AACs, and Ogg Vorbis.

I you want to import the audio as an mp3 le, you can choose rom 16 di erent bit rate settings, ranging rom 16 to 320kbps. Exporting the audio as AAC would also be within that range.

o try out the so tware or 15 days, visithtt ://www.audiofle-e gi eeri g.com/waveeditor/.

Tis months review is about a programcalled Wave Editor. Although it is called

Wave Editor, you can also edit otheraudio ormats beside .wav les such as.mp3s and .m4as.

Te program opens up with three tabs.Tey are the Inspector, KeyboardShortcuts, and Processor. Each o them is

Tis months Garageband tutorial is about editing. Tese are some handy tips thatcan help producers who are just starting to use or do not have experience o usingthe program.

Te rst is about snapping tracks. When you open up Garageband, you will notice thatyour tracks will snap at a position a ter you import them. o remove the snapping e ect, simply click on the Control option in the menu and choose Snap to Grid.

Te Snap to Grid option is use ul when arranging music tracks. Sometimes, it is also use ul when you want to arrange voice trackor sounds that occur at the same moment. However, when arranging character dialogues, this should be turned o .

You have an option to choose how precise the snapping e ect is. Click onthe upper right button in the timeline that looks like a diagonal ruler tosee the di erent settings. Te de ault setting is 1/4 Note.

My second tip is zooming in on a track. Suppose that you have les thatdo not start at the same millisecond and you want them all to start atthe same time. You may have to use this tip to accomplish your task.

Check the image on right. You may notice that the sounds a ter the th second are arranged well andconclude that both will start at exactly the same time. However, will they really start at the same time?

o be sure, you can zoom in on those tracks using a zoomeature in Garageband. Te zoom setting is located below the track list. Check the image

on the le t or a re erence.

A ter adjusting the zoom unction, we nd out that they do not start at the sametime. Te second track starts just be ore the

    rst track.

Tat is it or this month. I hope you learned a thing or two rom this tutorial.

Note: Tis tutorial is designed for Garageband 3, which may not apply to future versions of the software.

When listening to shows, you probably remember the characternames more than the voice actors. Do you think you know which o these voice actors are paired up or which show (without including the character names they are voicing?)

Note: Tere are only our males and emales butone o themis also paired up with a di erent VA in a di erent show.
