any organizations today are taking advantage of bandwidth-saving technologies by running theirdata traffic over public Frame Relay services or over leased lines or wireless links in private FrameRelay networks. These companies are also taking advantage of their data network infrastructure to
run voice over data services. Using a single infrastructure for transmitting both voice and data offers many
benefits, such as lower communications costs, reduced infrastructure expenses and fewer networkmanagement efforts.
RAD offers a full line of integrated bandwidth managers that optimize the use of Frame Relay and leasedline networks. The MAXcess family of bandwidth managers supports a mix of traffic, including voice, fax, video and multiprotocol data, such as HDLC, IP, IPX, sync and async traffic. MAXcess assures effectivebandwidth utilization and maximizes the effectiveness of lower speed links. Intelligent voice switchingensures a smooth transition to the integrated voice and data network.

Saves on Intra-Company Communications
Voice over Frame Relay (VoFR) takes advantage ofthe data network to run packetized voice. Itcircumvents the PSTN for inter-office telephonecalls, thereby eliminating monthly telephone bills.MAXcess VoFR also enables branch offices to benefitfrom the functionality of the central PBX. Eachbranch office becomes just an extension away fromheadquarters. In addition, calls destined for thePSTN are routed through the network and exit atthe most economical point, establishing a local callrather than a long-distance call.
Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation
By statistically integrating all traffic types over FrameRelay, leased lines, satellite or radio links, MAXcessmakes the most efficient use of available bandwidth.MAXcess dynamically allocates bandwidth accordingto the needs of each application.
Intelligent Voice Switching
The unique voice switching technique of theMAXcess provides fast and efficient call routing. It
reduces infrastructure and service costs and is easyto set up and implement. MAXcess preserves the

network (i.e., PBXs), so users are not affected by themigration to the integrated voice and data network.
Single Compression-DecompressionCycle Maintains High Voice Quality
Calls between remote offices are routed via thecentral MAXcess unit and not via the central PBX.This eliminates tandeming, or multiple compression-decompression cycles. Voice calls are compressedonly once, when they enter the MAXcess device, and are decompressed once, when they exit to the
destination PBX or telephone. Avoiding the PBX notonly maintains the voice quality, but also saves costlyPBX voice ports.
Highest Quality Voice Compression
MAXcess offers low bit rate voice compression atdata rates from 5.1 kbps to 8.3 kbps. Voicecompression is based on ITU standard G.723.1 forcompressed voice. Since most access links to FrameRelay networks are 56/64 kbps, it is essential to havehigh quality voice compression that will permit the
greatest number of simultaneous calls withoutcompromising voice quality.

Silence Suppression
MAXcess automatically detects silent periods in anactive voice call and frees this bandwidth to allowmore voice and data sessions.
Compressed Voice SystemFor applications that transfer mainly voice traffic, theMAXcess in RAD
,s Compressed Voice System (CVS)
over Frame Relay delivers toll-quality voice at acompression ratio of up to 10:1, including Frame Relayoverhead. It can accommodate different voicecompression and fax rates for commercial-grade service(for example, voice at 5.1 kbps and fax at 9.6 kbps).
Prioritization and Fragmentation
Long and variable delays between Frame Relay voice
packets result in awkward-sounding speech andinterfere with the conversation. To avoid delays intransmitting voice and other time-sensitive traffic,MAXcess assigns traffic types to seven priority levels.Higher priority traffic receives precedence in enteringthe network.
The unique FR+ segmentation protocol employedby the MAXcess fragments data frames only whennecessary (that is, if higher priority frames are waitingto enter the network), reducing overhead and boostingthroughput.
Single DLCI Saves Communications Costs
MAXcess can multiplex all voice and datatransmissions at each site over a single DLCI, savingon Frame Relay service charges and simplifyingconfiguration.
Connection on Demand
Support of ISDN in the MAXcess saves on WANcosts by providing connectivity only when needed. The ISDN link, used mainly for backup, is establishedor disconnected automatically over PRI or BRI lines.

A VPN is a private network that operates over ashared, public network. Frame Relay VPNs basedon permanent virtual connections (PVCs) providean extremely reliable solution for multiprotocoltraffic. Security and privacy are assured by built-intunneling, since the point-to-point link between
two users cannot be penetrated by any other party.Organizations with large, distributed networks runmultiprotocol data and voice over Frame Relay asa cost-effective alternative to leased lines. Typically,

these networks have one or two headquarters, severalregional offices and many smaller branch offices. The MAXcess can be configured with a backup linkover ISDN, Frame Relay, PSTN or leased lines.Backup is important for mission-critical traffic suchas in government, security and emergency services
applications. If the main link fails, the MAXcessroutes all traffic over the backup link. When serviceis restored, traffic is automatically routed back throughthe Frame Relay network.
MAXcess support of asymmetric applications isimportant for satellite systems. The prioritization, fragmentation, echo cancellation and silence
suppression features of MAXcess products minimizedelay and jitter characteristic of satellite links.

Central SNMP Management
RAD,s MAXcess family of products is managed and
controlled by the RADview SNMP PC- or UNIX-based network management system, which enables
complete monitoring and control of the network froma central management station. The friendly GUI(graphical user interface) provides on-line supervision, configuration and diagnostics with physical and logicalnetwork views.
ISDN S0 Voice
The MAXcess-30 and MAXcess-300 bandwidthmanagers provide high quality, cost-effective ISDNvoice and fax support. The units can compress twoISDN BRI voice channels and the D-channel overa 64 kbps Frame Relay link. Dynamic bandwidthallocation achieves more efficient use of the line and
allows running sync, async or IP/IPX data traffic inaddition to ISDN voice traffic over Frame Relay, ISDNand leased line networks.
