description

In the 1920’s the Kou Klux Klan (KKK), a radical racist group, became overwhelmingly popular with about 3-8 million members in total. In the 1920s, the Klan moved to take over local and state politics through a strategy called the "decade," in which each member was responsible for recruiting ten people to vote for candidates in elections that were part of the KKK. In 1924 the Klan succeeded in engineering the elections of officials from coast to coast. Members of the KKK became government officials in Portland, Maine, Oregon as well Colorado and Indiana, where placed enough members in high positions of power to completely control the state government. Immigration• In the 1920’s immigration became very prevalent.

Within the first 15 years, 13 million people came to U.S. from other countries around the world through Ellis Island where they are processed in to the system and are checked for sickness, etc.• This boom in population led to competition in jobs,

(which were already hard to come by) and caused many Americans to resent the immigrants coming to America in abundance. • This mass of immigration continued until the

Immigration Quota Law of 1924 and a 1929 act which limited the number of annual immigrants to 150,000.

of black people in the united states.• They helped to bring a collapse in the KKK membership through

protesting and uniting African Americans to create a sense of pride within them and by 1930, membership had dropped from its 5 million, to 30,000.

Harlem Renaissance • The Harlem Renaissance was the period in time

where African American culture, music, and art became extremely popular . • It is known as the “New Negro Movement”,

though many blacks were poor and treated unfairly. It was a hard time for them so they expressed their emotions and thoughts through their art.• The UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement

Association), founded in 1914 by a man named Marcus Garvey, placed it’s headquarters in Harlem, which is where the movement began.
