National Association for Music Education (MENC) Project: National Survey of Music in Early Childhood; Principal Investigator, $4000, 2003. I was solicited to apply for this grant. In collaboration with researchers from Eastman School of Music, Columbia Teachers College, and Trinity University in Texas, we conducted a national survey of music in accredited early childhood centers, in relation to National Standards in Music. Outcome: Published in JRME.

Gateway Project, Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis Project: Development of an online, asynchronous Music Fundamentals course for undergraduates, Principal Investigator; $5000, 2002. Outcome: this project has increased access to E241 (Introduction to Music Fundamentals) for 150 students per year. It is one of our most popular courses in music, suggesting that music fundamentals can be successfully taught online.

Center for the Enhancement of Teaching, Technology Enhanced Course Delivery Initiative, San Francisco State University.Project: eMUSE: A Learning Community for Large-Lecture GE Music Courses. This “blended” learning project connected students of a large lecture course (N=250) in an on- line environment. On-line work included group projects, tests, peer-reviewed written work, and virtual chat office hours; Principal Investigator, course release, 2000. Outcome: Highly successful, and maintained after I left the campus. This project was disseminated at the International Society for Music Education, Bergen, Norway via Internet2 in 2002.

Vice President's Award of Assigned Time for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity, San Francisco State University Project: A comparative study of two methods for teaching music fundamentals to elementary education majors: Interactive computer-assisted instruction versus traditional paper-based/lecture delivery; Principal Investigator, course release, 1999-2000. Outcome: This study helped determine the effectiveness of software for teaching music fundamentals. This project resulted in class resign for large, GE music courses.

Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, San Francisco State University. Start-up funds. Project: Support of research—a comparative study of two methods for teaching music fundamentals, $5000, 1999.

President’s Award for Innovation in Teaching, Pasadena City College Project: Online Music Fundamentals; Principal Investigator, $22,000, 1998. Outcomes: This project resulted in the implementation of a facilitated learning lab at Pasadena City College. It created access for 200 students per year.

Chancellor’s Office of the California Community Colleges—Fund for Instructional Improvement. Project: A New Paradigm for Music in Early Childhood; Principal Investigator; total with matched: $17,000, 1994. This project surveyed licensed childcare centers in California regarding the status of music education and economic development. Outcome: Establishment of an associate of arts degree with a specialization in early childhood music. The curriculum has been adopted, in part, by other states and Israel. This project was disseminated at the International Society for Music Education in Toronto, 2000, and published in a vetted early childhood music journal.

Pasadena Area Community College District Competitive Grants for Innovation in Teaching. Project: Music Fundamentals Remediation via Computer; Principal Investigator, $28,000, 1993. Outcome: this project funded a music computer lab for “just-in-time” course remediation.

Outcome: left project for IUPUI. National Academy of Recording Arts Project: Evaluation of Cognitive and Perceptual Processes Elicited by Interactive Music Software Using Electroencephalographic (EEG) Recording Techniques. My role: grant writer, project director, co-investigator. Co-investigator is Mark Geisler, Ph.D., Dept. of Psychology, San Francisco State University; $10,000, 2000. Outcomes: Still in progress, but research has been disseminated at three national/international music or psychology conferences.

National Science Foundation - ATE Program Project: Interdisciplinary Project: Academy for Creative Arts My role: co-PI, grant writing, program assessment, publications, music technology curriculum, web sites, music lab design/installation, and dissemination. $375,000, 1997-99. The purpose of this project was to teach science majors how to use digital media technologies to display scientific knowledge. Outcome: Due to its success, the project was institutionalized. Results were disseminated at a national NSF conference, 1997.
