Chapter 1

Rachel Carson was a scientist. A scientist is

someone who studies science. She was born on

May 27, 1907 in Pennsylvania. She lived on a

farm with her mother, father, brother and sister.

There were pigs, horses, cows and chickens on

the farm. Rachel loved the animals. She liked to

feed the chickens. Rachel did not go to school a

lot because her mother was scared she would get

sick or get a disease. Her mother was a teacher

so she taught her many things at home.

Chapter 1

Rachel loved the ocean. She lived far from the ocean but she really

wanted to see it. She would play with her mother’s conch shell and think

about the ocean.

Rachel lived in a small house. It only had four rooms. The house did not

have any electricity. They had to use a lantern for light. Radio and

television were not invented yet.

Chapter 2 Rachel liked to read. She read many books.

She also liked to write stories. Rachel wanted

to write a story for the St. Nicholas magazine.

The magazine had many stories and poems.

When she was 9 years old, Rachel wrote a

story and sent it to St. Nicholas magazine. Her

mother helped her. She wanted to see her

story in the magazine. One year later, in

September 1918, Rachel finally saw her story

in the magazine. She was very happy. They

also sent her $10. She sent more stories to

the magazine and was paid money for them.

Chapter 2

Nine years later, Rachel was ready to

go to college. Rachel’s mother

wanted her to go to college in

Pennsylvania. She wanted Rachel to

stay close to home. The people at

Pennsylvania College gave Rachel a

scholarship to go to school there. A

scholarship is a gift of money. She

was very excited to start school.

In 1925, Rachel Carson went to

Pennsylvania College. She was 18

years old. She loved to write.

During her first year in school,

Rachel wrote stories for the school

magazine and newspaper. She

studied very hard in her English

class. She wrote poems and

stories. She really liked her

teacher, Ms. Croff.

Chapter 3

During her second year in college, Rachel

had to take a science class. At first she did

not want to take the class. After a while, she

really liked the science class. She loved her

teacher, Ms. Skinker. In her class she got to

study frogs, fish and nature.

Rachel was confused. She really loved

writing but she also wanted to study biology.

She didn’t think she could do both. She

chose biology.

Chapter 4

After she finished college, she got a

job studying the ocean. She was very

happy. She loved watching the sea

frogs. She began studying biology. In

1932, she got a job as a scientist. She

also got a job writing stories about fish.

She was so happy she was able to

work doing two things she loved,

studying science and writing.

Chapter 4

In 1935, Rachel’s father died. Her

family was very sad. Many people

did not have jobs. Rachel had to

take care of her family. Rachel felt

very lucky to have a job. Her mother

helped her with her science

experiments she had to do for

work.

Rachel liked her new job. She enjoyed writing

about science. She was finally able to study

science and write. She loved doing both.

In 1936, Rachel’s sister died. Rachel and her

mother had to take care of her sister’s two

children. They lived in a small house. They

didn’t have a lot of money. Rachel wrote a

book called, “Under the Sea Wind”. The book

told stories about animals that live in the sea.

She was paid $250 for her book.

In 1941, Japan attacked the United States

and started a war. The war affected

everyone. People did not have a lot of

money because of the war. Only a few

people bought Rachel’s book, “Under the

Sea Wind”. Rachel was not happy because

she did not get a lot of money from selling

her book.

In 1947, Rachel started to write

another book called, “The Sea Around

Us”. The book was about animals in

the sea. It took her three years to

finish writing the book. Everyone

loved the book. She was paid

$10,000 to sell her book.

Rachel bought a new house that was

close to the woods and the ocean. She

studied different beaches and oceans to

get information for her next book called,

“Edge of the Sea”. The book was about

all of the animals she studied that lived in

the coral and beaches. Everyone loved

her and her books.

Chapter 7

In the 1950’s, Rachel heard companies were using pesticides to

kill bugs. The pesticides were hurting the animals and the sea. The

pesticides were making people and animals sick. Rachel wanted to help.

No one would listen to her. She decided to write a book about the pesticides. She didn’t tell anyone

about the book she was writing. She kept it a secret.

Rachel found out a lot of facts for her

book about pesticides. The name of the

book was, “Silent Spring”. It took her a

long time to finish the book. In 1959,

Rachel’s mother got sick and died.

Rachel took a break from writing the

book. Rachel was sad because she was

alone.

Rachel became sick. After a while, Rachel

started writing her book again. It was

important for her to finish her book even

though she was sick. In 1962, her book,

“Silver Spring” was finally done. People

were now happy to know about all the

dangers of pesticides.

Rachel Carson died on April 14, 1964. She

was 57 years old. She taught people many

important things about nature, science and

the sea.
