WHO are brand-new readers?

Brand-new readers are children in pre-K to first grade who are just learning to read and who will gain

confidence when they succeed the first time they try.

“The Brand New Readers® series is one of the best out there to motivate new readers.”

■ Essential books for preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade classrooms

■ Leveled for guided reading, with levels B–E

■ Ideal for developing vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills

■ A great way to incorporate parent involvement into daily reading

■ Real stories with characters that your students will want to read about again and again

■ Written by award-winning children’s authors

■ Illustrated with full-color artwork by illustrators kids know and love

■ Great for ESL/ELL and struggling readers

Each Brand New Reader has a “story introduction” for you to read to your students before they read the book on their own and simple, common-sense suggestions for parents so they can help their brand-new readers at home.

About David Martin, chief consultant and primary creator of the Brand New Readers® seriesDavid Martin was a teacher for eighteen years and an early literacy support specialist for the Vermont Department of Education. It was while teaching reading to young children that he began to understand the needs of brand-new readers and began to create short, simple books for his students. These led to the development of the Brand New Readers series.

VOCABULARY

Varied use of language that addresses many different topics, characters, and settings, complemented by clear and detailed illustrations, provides the needed support for developing vocabulary.

FLUENCY

Repeated patterns and a variety of punctuation and dialogue make Brand New Readers ideal for increasing fluency.

COMPREHENSION

Colorful illustrations, introductions for each story, and plots, conflicts, and resolutions familiar to young children aid comprehension.

HOW do Brand New Readers® work?

PLUS!

Illustrations so clear that children can guess the words

by looking at the pictures

Short, patterned sentences that make it easy to recognize new words

Language that flows naturally, letting children

draw on the way they speak to read words they see

Appealing characters and funny stories

Simple design so that a child can easily tell where

to start and stop reading and can follow each sentence

to its end withoutinterruption

Consistent placement of print that, like repetitive

or rhythmic language, helps a child predict

new words
