SYNERGYRESTAURANTS & WINE
Roger Roessler spent more than 40 years
creating and growing restaurants. As fine
wine became more of an emphasis in
those restaurants, Roger found himself
becoming more and more interested in
wines and winemaking. One of those
restaurants, the Swiss Hotel in Sonoma,
drew him to make his permanent home
in wine country in the 1990s. Once he
got there, it wasn’t long before his dream
of making wine became a reality.

ROESSLER CELLARS
PINOT CREDIBILITY
In 2000, Roger and his brother Richard created
Roessler Cellars and began crafting single vineyard
and appellation blended Pinot Noirs from selected
vineyards up and down the California Coast.
Over the next decade, they applied what they had
learned from years of tasting, working with
growers and developing their own vineyards – one
in Annapolis in far northern Sonoma County, one
at the western edge of Carneros in Sonoma Valley
and one in Anderson Valley. The brothers garnered
a dedicated following for their texture-driven,
delicious and expressive small-lot Pinot Noirs.

With the goal of taking the Roessler label to the next
level, Roger and Richard agreed to merge that label
into Hall Wines of Napa Valley and created their
current wine venture, R2 Wine Company. In the years
that followed, Roger found that although he loved the
complexity and individuality that vineyard designated
Pinots offered, he increasingly enjoyed the consistency
and wider appeal of appellation blended Pinot Noirs
and really loved the process of creating these blends.
Their predictability and broader palate appeal also
made these blends far easier to pair with food. He
began to focus more on these blends at Roessler
Cellars, but his epiphany with these wines came with
his creation of Black Pine Pinot Noir.

BLACK PINE MEANS
PINOT NOIR!
Originating in France, the grape variety Pinot
Noir got its name because the first Pinot Noir
grape clusters resembled the shape of the pine
cones from the Black Pine tree indigenous to
southern France. “Black Pine” seemed to Roger
to be a fitting name for the wine he wanted to
immediately evoke the image and flavor of
“Pinot Noir” to wine lovers everywhere.
