Greetings!Welcome to our Winter Studio Art catalog, filled with classes, workshops and art activities that the whole family can do together.

One of the things we pay special attention to here at the Worcester Art Museum is community. In our Studio Art programming, I personally witness how a sense of

community develops among students and how much it supports and motivates them as they work to accomplish their goals.

We often forget how instantaneous everything is today. Art is different. Art is a process, an idea, an experiment. To take it to completion, art takes time and effort. Here at WAM, you don’t work alone, and that makes our Studio Art program unique. You come in, take a seat, meet your classmates, and teacher. Just like school, you get to know each other.

Relationships grow as teachers engage students one or two at a time. There are classroom critiques, and there’s almost nothing that leaves you feeling more vulnerable. How many other places are people honest with you? You may see that you’re not quite done yet, that there are kinks to work out. By the time you come out the other side, you have a completed work of art, you’ve achieved your goals … and … you have a trusted support system. We don’t have many opportunities for accomplishment, like that outside of Studio Art. It feels good. And it’s so much more than most of us expected from an art class.

Sincerely,

Ashley Occhino Studio Class Manager

Congratulations to our Cover Contest winner! Linda Spencer

Linda Spencer’s luminescent oil paint-ing, “Winter Train over Seven-Mile River, East Brookfield,” appears on the cover of WAM’s Studio Art 2016/17 winter catalog. Her winning entry was selected from a number of submissions, all by current and former Studio Art students.

Spencer’s painting — a mesmerizing display of muted light and soft colors that aptly captures early New England

winter — began with a brisk walk behind the Massasoit Art Guild studios in East Brookfield. The light was exceptional so she took a number of photographs and then headed to the studio to paint.

“People asked me, ‘Where is that stunning location?’ and I told them it was just out back. You don’t have to travel far to find beauty.”

Why would Spencer, an artist and art teacher, decide to take classes at WAM’s Studio Art program? The answer is not complicated, she says. “If you work and you’re busy, you won’t paint if you don’t take a class.”

Spencer, who coincidentally lives in Spencer, taught art at the Quabbin Regional High School in Barre for 35 years. During those demanding years, she took Studio Art classes to bring fresh ideas

to her classroom. At the same time, she developed her own preferences and style as an artist. And it was at WAM that she came into her own as an artist.

“I took my first plein-air painting class with Susan Swinand at WAM. I love plein-air. Now that I’m retired, I paint much more.”

Painting is restorative, engaging, challenging and, yes, even therapeutic.

“I’ve always loved the outdoors,” she says. “It’s the fresh air, the sense of being there. The wonder of looking at everything. To quickly capture what you see is quite a challenge. You have to focus so much on what you’re doing. For the time that you’re

working, it’s almost like a vacation, though I’m always exhausted afterward. It’s a lot of work — taking what you see and limiting it to a small canvas.”

In art, Spencer says, “there’s no right or wrong. Art is a safe place to be. My students gained tremendous confidence that carried over into other parts of their lives. You take risks, see some successes there, and then you’re willing to take more risks, try harder, try something else.”

“Be fearless,” she says. “Don’t worry. You can always try again.”

The entries in the winter cover contest are featured on WAM’s Facebook page facebook.com/worcesterartmuseum.

Popular Studio Art teacher Jamie Buckmaster has been making and teach-ing art most of his life. He started taking Studio Art classes when he was 12. At 16, he became a teacher’s assistant at WAM. Now he teaches everything from mixed media to computer art to illustration to students of all ages. Outside of WAM, he creates a comic book series called “Psychedelic Surfer,” he does freelance illustrations and T-shirt design, and he plays in a number of bands.

This full-tilt immersion in a creative life not only suits Buckmaster, but it enables him to motivate and energize students season after season. This enthusiasm for creativity may be his biggest gift to students.

“I try to convey the idea that art isn’t necessarily about technique but being open to ideas and exploring them,” he says. “Let yourself see where it takes you. You say you can’t draw? That doesn’t matter. It’s a form of expression. As long as you have the dedication to sit there and create, you can express yourself through the art form. I love it when this happens, when students find themselves through art.”

Buckmaster is at ease teaching 5-year-olds and 65-year-olds. “Young kids don’t have any concept about what it is to be an artist. They are all artists at that age, finding new ways to speak, new ways to express themselves. Whereas coming

into it later in life, you may think you’re not someone who can make art. It’s a little bit scary and outside your comfort zone.” At that point, the creative process can intervene. “You get into the mindset of a child, open up, and express yourself like a child again.”

Teaching art, says Buckmaster, inspires his own creativity in two ways. One, working with young children is a potent reminder to let go, like they do, and allow the imagination to flourish. “I want to get into their worlds, pick their brains, get ideas. These young artists are completely unfettered. I love that.”

Conversely, teaching requires the analysis and synthesis of the art form.

“When teaching a certain technique, for example, you have to back up and look at what you do. You have to examine it from all angles, condense the idea, and then make it concise. It’s a good skill and it’s enlightening.”

Making art, says Buckmaster, is transporting. “You have this blank piece of clay, of paper, of canvas. You begin adding colors. You form something that never existed before. It’s empowering. It’s meditative. Sit down, draw for a couple of hours, turn the front brain off, just kind of go. Something magical happens. Everybody should be making art.”
