It is fitting that God should receive glory, because of his great majesty; but it is fitting for us as human beings to submit ourselves to God and thereby become his friends. Then we too will rejoice in his glory as Saint John the Baptist did, and we shall nev- er stop repeating: His fame must increase, but mine must diminish. I knew someone who was sad that he could not love God as he would have wanted, but who nevertheless loved God so much that his soul was always in the grip of desire for God, for God’s glory to manifest itself in him, for himself to be as nothing in comparison. Such a person cannot be touched by verbal praise or con- vinced of his being, since his overwhelming hu- mility means that he simply does not think about his own dignity or status. He celebrates the litur- gy as, according to the law, priests should; but his love of God blinds him to all awareness of his own dignity. He buries any glory that might come his way in the depth of his love of God, so that he never sees himself as anything more than a useless servant: he is estranged, as it were, from a sense of his own dignity by his de- sire for lowliness. This is the sort of thing we ought to do, to flee from any honour or glory that is offered us, for the sake of the immense riches of our love of God who has so loved us. Anyone who loves God in the depths of his heart has already been loved by God. In fact, the measure of a man’s love for God depends upon how deeply aware he is of God’s love for him. When this awareness is keen it makes whoever possesses it long to be enlightened by the divine light, and this longing is so intense that it seems to penetrate his very bones. He loses all consciousness of himself and is entire- ly transformed by the love of God. Such a man lives in this life and at the same time does not live in it, for although he still in- habits his body, he is constantly leaving it in spirit because of the love that draws him toward God. Once the love of God has released him from self-love, the flame of divine love never ceases to burn in his heart and he remains unit- ed to God by an irresistible longing. As St Paul says: If we are taken out of ourselves it is for the love of God; if we are brought back to our senses it is for your sake. Diadochus of Photiké todays Reflection / Inspiration

2017 BEGINS ON A GOOD NOTE FOR ST ANNA LAY

ORGANISATION

St Anna Lay Group at the parish opened the New Year on a good note after recruiting five (5) novices who received head-gears (Vitambala) on Monday January 2, 2017 during the 09.00hrs Mass. The five trainees were com-missioned by the Parish Priest; Fr Christopher Mróz who presided over the Mass.

Mrs Annie Mwape, the Chairperson of the Group, on Sunday January 8, 2017 after Eng-lish Mass, said the new members had to go through the procedure of wearing vitambala before being finally recognized as members of the group. Mrs Mwape said upon successful completion of the instructions, and other re-quirements, the five women would be bloused to become full time members of the group (NB. Blousing takes place on the occasion of St An-na Feast - July 26 each year). She said it was

not automatic that the novices would be accept-ed and bloused as members because there were rules and regulations which she said the recruits should be conversant with. She urged the newly recruited members to be committed and conversant with the teachings of the group which would make them to be accepted and bloused. Mrs Mwape said whoever joins St Anna Organisation should prove their worthi-ness during the time of their probation; other-

wise they won’t qualify to be members. And on the same Sunday, an impeccable

source told this reporter that some of the new members vowed to sweet-talk their husbands to join ST JOACHIM LAY GROUP FOR MEN at the parish. St Joachim was the husband of St Anna (together being the Grandparents of Jesus), hence the need for all husbands whose wives are in St Anna Lay group to join St Joachim Lay group. At present, St Joachim Lay group has only one member, Mr Mathews Mudungani of St Joseph SCC who has been lonely working tirelessly to recruit more members at the parish, but to no avail. Fr Christopher Mróz has time and again seen by this reporter pleading with some men at the parish to join it, but this has not changed the situation as most men were only giving the priest prom-

issory notes. The newly recruited members are as follows: MRS CECILIA BWALYA ZULU (St Augustine SCC) MRS EVARISIA MWANZA MUKONKA (St Augustine SCC) MRS TAURAI SIAME SITENGE (St Augustine SCC) MRS STELLA CHIBWE (St Bakhita SCC) MRS ESTHER MBEWE BANDA (St Mary SCC).

CONGRATULATIONS LADIES! AND WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST IN ST ANNA LAY GROUP!

21 BENEFITS OF MAKING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

The Sign of the Cross is a simple gesture yet a profound expression of faith for both Catho-lic and Orthodox Christians. As Catholics, it’s some-thing we do when we enter a church, before meals, and every time we pray. But what exactly are we doing when we make the Sign of the Cross? Here are 21 benefits of making the Sign of the Cross:

1. Pray. We begin and end our prayers with the Sign of the Cross, perhaps not realizing that the sign is itself a prayer. If prayer, at its core, is “an uprising of the mind to God,” as St John Dama-

scene put it, then the Sign of the Cross assuredly qualifies. “No empty gesture, the sign of the cross is a potent prayer that engages the Holy Spirit as the divine advocate and agent of our successful Christian living,” writes Bert Ghezzi.
