Reflection

It is widely held that the word ‘Lent’ is a shortening of the word ’lengthen’ which relates closely to the increasing amount of daylight we enjoy at the change of the seasons as Spring comes around. This light shows us the dust that has gathered in our homes through the Winter and allows for a deeper ‘Spring clean’ to be done. Lent allows us to do some spiritual spring cleaning and clear up the inner clutter in order to make more room for God and neighbour.

A Time Of Turning Round

Truly dust we are and unto dust we shall return; and truly yours we

are, and to you we shall return.

Help this to be a time of turning round and beginning again.

Through the forty days of Lent, help us to follow you, and to find you in the discipline of praying,

and in the drudgery of caring – in whatever we set ourselves to learn

or do.

Help us to discover you, in our loneliness and in the community,

in our emptiness and our fulfilment, in our sadness and our

laughter.

Help us to find you when we ourselves are lost. Help us to follow you on your journey to

Jerusalem, to the waving palms of people’s hope, to their rejection, to the cross and the empty tomb. Help us to perceive a new growth amid the ashes of the old. Help us, carrying your cross, to be signs of

your kingdom.

Amen.

of the Month

Congratulations to the following pupils on their sporting achievements: Hannah Gale in 7 Beesley has recently achieved her 6th Mon in judo. Hannah now has her 3rd red tag of three on her yellow belt and is now working towards her orange belt. Dylan (Year 8) and Maisie Newburn (Year 7) both won Gold medals for their successes at the North Wales Tae Kwon Do championships on the 1st February. Dylan won Gold in Foot Power and Silver in Hand Power and his sister Maisie won Gold in Hand Power. Handball: All years have competed spectacularly in their handball matches, Oliver Lane captained the year 7 team to victory on two of their three matches played. All players performed well especially Archie Tate who took player of the tournament. All players of the year 9 team worked very hard to win four of five matches, this was a reflection of their enthusiasm and great communication between each other and resulted in them winning the plate of the tournament. All of the team played well especially Tom Swarbrick was an excellent goalkeeper, both he and Fergus Hotchkiss each won player of the tournament. Year 10 and 11 handball teams displayed excellent skill in their matches and played four games each. Ben Dodd, Daniel Palmer and Kane Twomey have performed especially well and each were awarded player of the tournament within their year group teams. Football: Congratulations to Lily Worthington, Jack Wareing and Rylee Wilkinson who have all reached the under 12s Lancashire Cup Final. Rylee Wilkinson scored the winning penalty taking Lytham Attack to the final. Indoor Athletics: A big well-done to all of the students who competed in this year’s indoor athletics tournament, thank-you for doing the school proud and trying your best. An even bigger well done to the Year 7 boys who finished third overall and Year 8 boys and girls who finished fourth. A special mention to Alfie Dowel who threw an impressive 9 metres in the shotput and Matt Holton who won his endurance race.

Sports Roundup

This half-term, the English department have taken part in the ‘Young Voices Competition’, giving pupils the opportunity to get creative and write a piece of poetry about a certain topic. The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Through Their Eyes’ a concept which allows pupils to put themselves into the position of others. We have had a number of impressive entries from all years which have been submitted to the national competition and we are also choosing a winner for the school on the 28th February.

On Saturday 9th May, we will be hosting a food packing day for 'Rise Against Hunger', an impressive initiative led locally by the Lytham Rotary Club. Pupil volunteers will join members of local Rotary Clubs to prepare several thousand parcels of non-perishable food items for a school in Africa and during Citizenship, will learn more about the school and write to some of its pupils. It's an exciting opportunity to build international links for our pupils as well as carrying out a valuable act of service for the good of others. Eric Russell from Lytham Rotary Club gave a presentation about the initiative to Year 10 pupils on Thursday, 6th February but we are looking for volunteers from other year groups too. For further information, please contact Mr Barnett.

Fylde Cross Country

A number of Saint Bede’s pupils were selected to compete in the very muddy Lancashire Cross Country Championships on Saturday 18th January, which alone is a fantastic achievement. The pupil’s involved were Evie Houlihan, Stan Fielding, Charlie Ormerod, Morgan Pritchard, Fergus Hotchkiss and Sophie Bohannon. Sophie finished 2nd and has now been selected to represent Lancashire in the county competition. All students represented the school brilliantly and did themselves proud.
