Assessing the appropriateness of ordering sputum cultures on patients admitted with presumed
diagnosis of COPD exacerbation. A quality improvment project. As per the most recent guidelines from
the COPD GOLD initiative, that states: COPD patients diagnosed with an exacerbation can be treated with
empiric antibiotics without the need for sputum analysis/ culture. We have noticed within our institution
that this idea is not promoted well enough. Looking at data, and analyzing patient charts to evaluate the
indication for ordering sputum cultures. Hence, a trial to cut down health costs.
