Success through Effort and Determination Issue 42: July 2018
Brampton Manor Academy, Roman Road, London E6 3SQ 020 7540 0500
Dear Parent/Guardian As usual, this academic year has been busy and rewarding for our staff and students. We are proud of our many achievements in sports, art, drama and music. We are also very proud of the academic progress of our students. We feel that we have left no stone unturned in helping your child to make the most of what Brampton Manor had to offer this year.
The GCSE and A level exams went very well and the feedback from the students was very positive. Like you, we eagerly look forward to receiving the results in August and hope that it will reflect all the hard work by the students and the support you have provided them.
The 2018/19 academic year starts on Tuesday 4th September 2018 for all students and I have written separately to you to inform you of the arrangements for the first day of term. We expect all students to resume on this day in full school uniform, ready to learn.
I would like to extend our best wishes to our Premises Officer, Mr Alan Salter who has retired after nearly 16 years of meritorious service to the school. We owe Alan a huge debt of gratitude and wish him a happy and healthy retirement. We also wish other staff leaving us the very best in their next endeavours. In particular, our thanks to Mr Badat and Mr Bryant, who between them, have worked at Brampton for almost 24 years. We wish them every success in their new schools.
We are starting the next academic year fully staffed and we are extremely fortunate to have such highly talented and committed staff teaching and supporting our children to achieve their potential. With your continued support and partnership, we will achieve greater things next year.
Have a wonderful and restful summer break.

R Brampton’s Year 7 Community Heroes
On Wednesday the 20th of June, five year 7 girls came to
the aid of an elderly lady, who had been the victim of a robbery. The elderly lady came out of the post office when she was robbed by two men, who ran away with her purse. The elderly lady was in a state of shock and five year 7 girls consoled the elderly lady and called the police. The pupils were Hope 7F, Ifrah 7D, Xiomara 7I, Hannah 7J and Inas 7L. The compassion and care these girls gave to the elderly lady and the bravery to call and then give statements to the police is commendable. We are extremely proud of how the girls represented the school in such an extreme situation, demonstrating what outstanding young people they are. The girls have also been recognised by the Religious Studies department for putting into practise the moral values and community spirit that they taught in their RS lessons. They have
been made RS ambassadors and currently they are the only RS ambassadors in our school. Mr Leaver, Year 7 Progress Leader
Year 10 Cricket Report The Year 10 cricket team have had an excellent season so far. They have played 8 games, winning 6 and only losing 2. They have had a good run in the Essex Cup reaching the quarter finals by beating Robert Clack and Bancrofts, before being beaten by New Hall. They also have the finals day of the London League at the end of term after finishing top of the East London league after beating Langdon, Barking Abbey, Norlington and Robert Clack. All the team have showed outstanding dedication and commitment to the season but the stand out performers were Mohammed Hussnain and Haider Syed Zaidi when both batting and bowling. Let’s hope the boys can bring back the London Cup to end a great season!
Year 9 & 10 Trip to Düsseldorf, Germany
This year some of our Year 9 German students were
given the opportunity to travel to Germany to experience
German culture and to practise speaking German. This
was Myriam’s experience from the trip;
“I only have 25 cents left”, I said to my friends
casually, as we were buying chocolates. But I knew
from this, that the German trip had been amazing. We
visited so many different areas and spent time and
money doing lots of things. Düsseldorf was a very
modern German city, the locals were friendly and we
practised our German quite well with them. The
weather was just the best, we had ice cream nearly
every day. This trip did not only help us understand
and learn about a different culture, but it also allowed
us, as pupils, to get to know other pupils who we
have not really socialised with at school. I made new
friends and became closer to my current friends too.
On our second day in Dusseldorf, we travelled to a
theme park, where we were allowed to go on as many
rides as we wanted. It was absolutely amazing! A lot
of the rides were scary, but I will never forget this day
or the experience. Overall, it was an amazing trip, we
were able to have so much fun with our friends,
whilst also learning more about German language
and culture. Hopefully we can go on many more
cultural trips like this!” From Maryam Nadeem, 9H
The students behaved exceptionally well and learnt a lot
on this trip. I am hoping next year, the year 9 students will be keen to come to Düsseldorf too.
Mrs Dinesh, Deputy Head of German
R UCAS Week 2018
The University Access Team was set up at Brampton a year ago and they
have been supporting students across Year 7 to Year 13 with
super-curricular activities ever since designed to stretch students beyond
their classroom subjects. To get the ball rolling on applying to universities
this year, we treated Year 12 to a whole week of activities designed to get
them focussed on refining their applications. The week was a great
success and included:
Lectures on the university application process
Subject-specific personal statement talks
40+ external speakers from institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge
and Imperial, who gave academic lectures and talks
Mock interviews
Career talks from different industry sectors
Networking sessions with professionals across a range of organisations, including the Mayor for London’s
office
Attending Bristol University Open Day
Materials Science session with guests from the University of Oxford.
Ms Dixon, Director of University Access
Oxford University Open Day
On 27th June, 40 Year 12 students headed to the University of Oxford to
attend the annual open days. The group stayed in two colleges, Wadham
and St John’s College, and spent two days looking around the university,
speaking to students and tutors and finding out more about the subjects that
are available to study at Oxford. Our students got a real insight into living
independently and into university life as a whole, including late night ice
cream trips and a kick around in the local park!
Ms Dixon, Director of University Access
Architecture Trip
On the 29th June, seven Year 12 students, who are interested in studying Architecture
at university, visited Mulroy Architects in North London to find out more about studying
Architecture and a career as an architect. The visit provided a great opportunity for
our Year 12s to ask questions about the industry and to get some real experience of a
working studio. We are thrilled that Bushra and Ioana will be joining Mulroy Architects
for work experience this summer!
Ms Dixon, Director of University Access
Origami Club was part of the summer term enrichment programme. Students had great fun during long break on Fridays, making origami models. “Origami club is super fun and enjoyable. We learn new things every week.” Jiulle Fernandes 7K. “Origami club is a fun club. I came to this club to make new friends and to learn new skills” Izaah Begum 7E and Aliona Bivolaru 7E. “When I first came to Origami club it was very new to me. I did not know how to make a square from a rectangular piece of paper. Now I can make a purse and different animals just by folding paper!” Mariana Uzum 7G. Mrs M Sharma - Head of Chemistry
R Girls Cricket The Girls Cricket Teams have had a great start to the season! The Year 7/8 team had an amazing first game against St Angela’s, beating them 281 runs to 225! The Year 10 Girls beat Sarah Bonnell 300 runs to 235. Well done to all the girls on their success and dedication to training! Miss Henry, Teacher of PE
Newham Athletics Competition Pupils participated in the Newham Disability Athletics Competition. There were awards, certificates and a trophy for
winning a variety of different events. Miss Rayner, Teacher of PE
Girls Rounders The Year 7 Girls Rounders Team have worked extremely hard in training this term and this has paid off in their recent match against Bobby Moore Academy. This was a very close game, which the girls won by one rounder. The girls are now in preparation for the Newham Rounders rally later this month. Keep up the hard work! Miss West, Teacher of PE
Year 7 Hockey The Year 7’s had the opportunity to participate in a Hockey tournament at the Olympic Park with the girls reaching 2nd place. They also had the opportunity to watch the England women’s team play against Spain. Miss Bowman, Teacher of PE
Trip to Madrid During the half term a group of year eights, nines and tens went on an amazing trip to Madrid, Spain. It was a long journey but the events and activities that we did there were enjoyable and really fun. We visited many notable places such as the Bernabeau Stadium, where the famous Real Madrid FC play, Palacio de Real - a historic landmark that was once the home to the Spanish royal family, Plaza del Sol, Plaza del Mayor and many beautiful parks and museums, where we got to see amazing and breath-taking pieces of art. We also had the opportunity to take part in a tapas experience, which gave us an insight into Spanish
culture and cuisine. The highlight of the trip was definitely the trip to the Bernabeau Stadium, as we not only got to see the awards and trophies and personal belongings of every football player that plays for Real Madrid, such as Ronaldo, but we also had the opportunity to go into the changing rooms and onto the pitch itself. Overall, the trip was amazing and it is surely one that we can never forget! Jumanah Ali (10E) and Jenese Alexandre (10E). Miss A Sanmiguel, Deputy Head of Spanish
