St. Augustine Catholic Church June 9, 2019 - Pentecost This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. This reconciling pres- ence of Christ is celebrated in the Church's sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are washed clean from sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God in forgiving sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. Burch, who grew up for a time in Larchmont, N.Y., was a two-sport athlete at Fayetteville State University and began his offi- ciating career in North Carolina high schools before joining the CIAA ranks as an official in 1959. He would join the ACC a decade later, but his debut was delayed for a season because he reportedly re- fused to cut his hair and sideburns. Over the course of 60 years, Burch not only officiated 14 NCAA tour- naments, he also worked games for the Southern and MEAC conferences. Burch was also the head co- ordinator of officials for the South Atlantic Conference and the CIAA before retiring. Burch passed on his knowledge of the game as a teacher for new officials in training, with many former students taking note of his humility regarding his historic mark, stating he never made a big deal about it. He was also an ed- ucator within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.
