    Punctuating Quotes

If a quotation is a question or anexclamation, place the punctuation (? or !)INSIDE the quotation marks.

What do flowers mean? I asked.

Commas and periods ALWAYS go INSIDEthe quotation marks. They are too little to go outside.

    Quotation marks in dialogue

If a quotation is not split or separated, don't

close the quotation until the speaker is

finished. This could sometimes involvenumerous sentences.

Example: "Please write your name on yourpaper before you begin. Once you finish, bring your paper to the front of the room andplace it on my desk," said the teacher.
